A critical review of the first official movie of the Studio Ghibli animation company, Laputa: Castle in the Sky. This video essay considers plot, character and themes found in Laputa, with attention given to the Disney dub starring Mark Hamill, James Van Der Beek, and Anna Paquin.

I love this movie, but... I don't care for the English dub. Luckily, my DVD lets me select the original language version with subtitles. Much better voicings, imo.

I'm also like that with a few of them, but it all depends on the movie. Kiki's Delivery Service for example, I prefer the Japanese... and weirdly my copy of Ocean Waves doesn't have an English dub option - so I'm not sure they ever even translated that one.

Love your content Alleyway Jack. I am a fan of Ghibli & Square Enix. I use to make a mix-CD of Ghibli and Kingdom Hearts tunes, back in the 2000s.

This movie is lovely, but the dub as on every Ghibli movie is terrible. They lack subtetly and deep. They also add stupid lines of dialogue where no dialogue should be. Thus drive me absolutely crazy.

um no, the dub on this movie is fantastic. As are the ones from Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa. Spirited Away's dub is annoying AF

@@StewNWT Yeah, sorry, but I have heard my share of bad dubs, and this isn't one of them. As far as I'm concerned, CASTLE IN THE SKY's dub, aside from the mature leads and the last part of Sheeta's speech at the end being altered, is otherwise great. As for SPIRITED AWAY, I may not be the hugest fan of that dub, but it IS at the very least a competently produced effort.

@@Turnajonagreed - utterly bizarre to say the ghibli dubs are terrible. Did he even watch Nausicaa or Mononoke?

@@StewNWT Sadly, there are people out there who genuinely do believe the Ghibli dubs are all terrible, if not then some of them, as well as a few who state that anyone saying that they are good dubs are making "wrong statement"s. I've been bullied numerous times for defending CASTLE's dub over the years as I've always believed it to be a genuinely great dub despite the more mature-leads (who are really a non-issue) and at least one line at the end that I would have preferred to be left unaltered, but those are small prices to pay for an otherwise fine dub. I also don't like the pressure from people who insist that the casts on these movies are no good and that you are wrong for thinking else wise.

@@StewNWT As far as NAUSICAA is concerned, I at first was kinda indifferent about that film and its Disney dub (not that I disliked either). However, one view of WARRIORS OF THE WIND and seeing how truly awful that version was clinched it for me. The Disney redub of that movie is indeed superior. I actually came to respect that movie more on account of that unpleasant experience.
