Both Sutherland and Domingo are out of this world ❤❤. Wowww , just an unbelievable performance like no other that I’ve heard. Many Bravos from me- what a duo they make .

Despite all the technical shortcomings, as well as the dismissed (by Kaye & Keck) edition that Bonynge concocted, I still think this is perhaps the best-sung and most theatrical Hoffmann on video. It was one of the very first opera performances I ever saw, with big cameras for recording on either side of the stage. It was long before the days of subtitles so, although I didn't really know the story (stories), I was thrilled by the singing and sets and costumes. Rumor has it that both the Met and Bonynge have a very copy of the performance, but it won't be released because of unions and competing recordings by the media companies. As for the lighting, Wolfgang Wagner originally rejected the Bayreuth Tannhauser (with Gwyneth Jones as both Venus and Elisabeth) because the lighting was so poor. But with technology advances, it was brightened, and for me it remains THE best Tannhauser on video. Technology has improved even more since then, so perhaps we'll eventually see a good version of this Hoffmann.

Indeed Richard sent me the videos I ve posted of the performance. Somehow the end of the Giulietta scene an epilogue are missing... It was supposed to be the first Met telecast of the color era.

The Met was not telecasting any performances until 1977. How did this much video become available? Anyway great to see!

This was supposed to be the Met's first live but technical issues nixed that. Essentially the entire broadcast has been posted on YT from time to time, apparently the Met complains and the posts get pulled.

Hello!!! Not at all. Those spectacles just make Hoffmann see things prettier. So Olympia appears the prettiest ever seen. (Excuse my poor English).

Be grateful that any of it exists at all. Supposedly both the Met and Bonynge have a good copy of this performance, but it's been held back by a number of issues: lighting, unions, competing performances by the media companies.
