yo broe great coverage, I've been using the ramp test for years (has the least fatigue post test), and remembering that ftp varies anyway +/-10%, but if you want to increase accuracy the idea is to zap all the atp from legs prior otherwise us sprinter types can ramp it up in final minutes creating an optimistic version of ourselves. re: weight loss, have you heard of sleep low protocol? very effective.
I have been using Xert training this year and the big change over other training platforms is that threshold power is calculated. Yes it can be a bit overwhelming with all of the data but at least no FTP tests required.
Ramp test % to FTP is way too high. I don’t know why Zwift or someone don’t use their data to triangulate the %s across different test formats properly. 95%/85%/75% for 20/5/1 is not an amateurs power curve
Exactly. I have been saying this for years and nobody listens. People say they have 5W/Kg FTP and I outclimb them with 4,65 because that my actual FTP number, not fiction result.
Good vid. I call the ramp ftp version “Fake T P”. Though I don’t think u should further drop your number for your training sessions. I think the sessions are designed for ur ramp results, not your “real” ftp. Even ignore the altitude effect unless u test at 1300 and train at sea level of vice versa
Yeah but you also need to have a watts target if you wanna do them well. Which makes them hard for beginners to do well in. I am not a beginner and even I don't know exactly where I should aim.
Ramp test is good enough for establishing zones, because yeah, 20 min at or slightly above threshold is f'ing torture. I'll take the 4-5 min of hell of a ramp over that lol
@@paulbigbee Yeah, it is so painful it is hard to stay motivated enough to push through it and achieve your best result possible. The hour one is less painful, but if you overestimate yourself and start to hard you're gonna die.
I have a feeling that ramp tests always overestimate your FTP. I have very good anaerobic capacity and did an FTP ramp test last year. Rode until the end of 380 watts and it said I had an ftp of 290. My ftp was 50 watts lower in reality, and I found that put the hard way during my first training 😂
it's quite normal for a ramp test to be estimating an FTP that's higher than reality... you could try to hold that number for 1 hour :D to prove it... or use this to settle on a target pacing for 20min test? Or even swap out these tests for critical power tests, you'd probably get more accuracy.
Yeah, I think maybe the step or ramp test is a better means for estimating VO2max. But, I seem to be able to train well enough with the estimated FTP from one of these test too. I'm guessing very few cyclist can hold their estimated FTP (from a step test or 20-min test) for an hour. They are generally good for setting training zones and identifying when you are over-cooking an effort on a hard group ride or race - not for planning a 1-hour TT effort (at that "FTP" wattage). Interesting that an Aussie is a big fan of an American baseball team - and the hopeless Mets, at that! Enjoy your LR podcasts. Ride on!
Why not just read your FTP off your power duration curve? Do a race. Do an indoor race. Do some hard efforts. You don’t have to test for your FTP, you just have to test what you can do, by doing it. It’s also long overdue for training programs to stop using an hour sustainable power as a proxy for your entire power duration curve. It’s reasonably useful, but a bad proxy. Programs such as JOIN should use the entire duration curve to customize the workouts. I believe WKO5 has something like this built in as Coggan iZones. Any test that requires individual fudging after the fact is useless.
Decent pacing around the flat - counting steps? 😂 Waiting 20 seconds through post roll ad just to give a like is courtesy to you, you're doings are much appreciated.
guy with a little bit of blood in his throat and pain in his arm after a 20 minute max effort... yeah I could have done 92.5% of that for 40 more minutes
Everything gets commentary, even the tennis ball throw for the dog.

Thanks for the behinds the scenes look!
I came here for a 1h FTP test … what is this sh#t 😂

Awesome honesty on the Ramp.
Love these vlogs.
I have a very similar situation with the ramp test, it over reads because I’m strong on the short end. I mainly use it as a self comparison
I recognise the glasses coming off during a turbo session 😅
Fun stuff! Although all the performance lingo went straight over my head lol

Sleep low protocol is suicide on your training if you plan to train hard. Don't do fad dieting bs. Stick to the basics and a longterm vision.

I always enjoy it, when he ends sentences with "I think" lmao
The only ramp test I want to see is taking the BMC to the skate park
I'm new to this, is an "Australian style cafe" that is "cracked" a good thing... or bad?
cracked is good
nice insights!
would love to maybe see you sometime doing spiroergonomics with lactate measurment. would be interesting to watch.
gotta have some hard edm on for a ramp test!
Looking slim in the mug! Nice work!

That face in the thumbnail hahaha
Do you have thoughts on the Ohtani scandal?
Patrick being a Mets fan is fucking hilarious. The front office there should definitely hire you lmao
"shit throw" great line
20 min FTP test gives better reading for threshold IMO. It is fucking horrible tho

Miss Broe didn't look stoked to go to breakfast
Gotta say as a big phillies fan i loved watching Rhys Hoskins against the mets this weekend
Is that your personal balcony? That apartment looks huge. Either rent in Andorra is cheap or LR is making bank.
Everyone lives in Andorra for the altitude benefits…… and the 4% income tax. Makes putting up with crap weather worthwhile.

JOIN Cycling
@@Patrick_Broe Thank you and good work on the test, these hurt!

Try the 8 minute test. I think it is easier to pace. And overheating is less of an issue.

I wonder how much active cooling Patrick's got in that bike room? Heat is a brutally hard limiter on sweet spot and above zones.
It’s minus 2 degrees outside, I open the window
@@Patrick_BroeThat certainly helps yeah lol, though I still try to use a fan for the direct evaporative cooling when I’m on the trainer
I will not stand by while your rubbish my Australian coffee

watch jomboy’s video on the mets sliding on double plays, real eye-opener.

you need three big fans blowing at you even for ramp test.

Agree with this. I do well at holding my threshold but suck at my calculated VO2.

How the hell do you know so much about sports?! I'm an American and I don't follow baseball nearly as close as you do.
