  • Today I'll be building the beds and walkways for our deep compost mulch system tunnel. I'll take you through somewhat of an abridged version for most of the steps taken while doing so. I will also be adding and extra set of earth anchors to hold our tunnel in place. This should help to prevent it lifting or shifting during any storms that might hit this area. We are one step closer to beginning our journey with the no till strategy garden!
Here is a link to Josh Sattin Farming channel where I first learned about this type of gardening. Go check him out for detailed information about how to get started.

Thanks Jedi. 30" beds are a standard and must for market gardens. I'll be planting salad greens on these beds and 30 inches means that I can plant 4 rows on each bed. 3.75" | 7.5" | 7.5" | 7.5" | 3.75" for the spacing needed to do this. 30 inches also makes it so that I can straddle the beds and is standard for almost every tool made for this type of gardening. I might expand upon this on an upcoming video.

What’s up GS, nice setup not many use pine needles for substrate anymore, wife and I are hoping once we close on the house on the 30th to have a good setup elevated large planting area for veg. Just off patio we shal see, your working like crazy out there, I remember when you where just starting the driveway, also here in Fl I rode by a farm that had over 100 of the tunnels the other day, but it’s plastic so it is what it is

You could definitely set up a heater, fans, or AC in a house like this. In my area I wouldn't need to do that but with some ingenuity I'm sure it could be done. Here is a link to the site where I purchased my tunnel. www.farmersfriend.com/

There are many resources out there that will answer any questions you may have. Many of us that have these tunnels in my area are in the path of hurricanes and tropical storms. I've never read or seen a video where a Farmers Friend tunnel took any wind damage. This gothic style tunnel is actually made to withstand large amounts of snow as well. The sides are currently in their vented position and both the zipper end doors are open as well. I have a shade cloth to install for the middle of summer that will drop the temperature by 15 degrees. You can set your irrigation system to sprinkle water during the heat of the day several times to cool things down as well. If this is the first video on the channel you have watched I highly suggest you look at the videos of me building this tunnel as some of your questions will be answered there. I also suggest looking at the link to farmer friend above. Most of your questions will be covered there.

Hi GS, it has been a while since I have been to this channel. I am very happy for you in building your tunnel. It my work out as you expect, but I think the walk ways are too small for a commercial use, if this is just for your family I would imagine you could tuff it out. I would also recommend you take a look at bio char to amend your beds. I remember you had some huge burn piles and I think you spread the char coal over your soil. This can be good in the long term, but bad in the short term as they will suck nutrients out of your soil. It is best to inoculate them with compost, worm castings, or anaerobically before you add them to your soil. There are a ton of garners who explain this on the tube of U's. I am now going to do a little binge watching to catch up. I have been seeding all day and would like to rest and watch you work...

Hi Flyman67 and thanks. You should go take a look at all the successful market garden channels on CZcams. Neversink Farms, Josh Sattin, etc. They are all using 30" beds with 14" walkways which is where I learned how to set up my farm. You'd be wasting space if you made the walkways any larger and in this tunnel you wouldn't be able to fit 4 rows. One 100' row is 50 pounds of greens in a tunnel every two weeks that you'd miss out on so that you could have a larger walking space. I use an organic fertilizer "Neversink Blend" which has a small amount (12%) of biochar in it. I dumped all of the ashes from burn piles into an unusable area away from my gardens. Small amounts those ashes can be added to your compost pile over time but I would not add them directly to your planting soil. Too much and it can increase the soil pH harming the growth of plants. If you put a lot in one place it will sterilize the soil and decrease surface water quality.

@@GrandOutdoors I should have known better, you have researched this to the lowest common denominator. I thought you were going with micro greens and would need the space to move around to harvest. I see it is as simple as cut and bag. Me, I grew up on a wheat farm and told my Dad he can keep it. However, a garden is my zin place and I live vicariously though you. If you have not researched this channels I would recommend them. The first is for an over all profit form you land. You have so much land and it is flat but not very productive. The first CZcams channel is for Joel Salatin, he has broken the code to producing many profit streams off of land and I think it is the way forward.

The second, The Survival Gardening Channel with David The Good, is a fun as well as informative channel dealing with your type of soil. I think it will be helpful if you have not found it on your own. I now that this is an endeavor you are passionate about as I can hear it in your voice. You want to make video after video and it is currently not paying off. I would, take a look at The Survival Gardening Channel with David The Good's (180K Subs) see all of the content. He has started over, as in moved his family to a new farm like 3 times. There is content where you are, but it may come at the cost of your 7DTD channel. There I have said it and I already hate that I did. As for me I will consume both or one or the other, it is all an opportunity cost to you and your family. Keep doing what you do and remember, I want to buy 5 bottles of syrup as soon as it is ready to ship. Cheers...
