spatial audio, for me anyway, is really for TV/movies and gives it a much more natural sounding experience. It sounds like the sounds are coming from the environment rather than being beamed telepathically in my head. For podcasts or for music it really seems more weird or gimmicky.

Yeah, I really can't have tips on my earbuds, as they cause me issues in terms of both suction when taking them out (no matter how I try to gently twist/whatever) as well as microphonics and other noises (e.g. chewing food is infinitely louder to me when my ears are sealed like that). While there are a few other choices for non-tipped earbuds, Apple is one of the few companies making really good ones. I say this as a big fan of Android and someone who otherwise dislikes a lot about Apple's general MO.
I'm curious to try the Pixel Buds A-series since they have tips but also a vent to help prevent suction. I'll see soon enough.

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. czcams.com/users/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

They literally never had it in any marketing or put a tutorial out on the phone for people to learn.

Spatial Audio with music is hit or miss because the original recording weren’t recorded for spatial audio (in the same way recordings originally made in Mono often sound not as great when up mixed to stereo). Now that spatial audio is being more widely adopted, I think you will see artists mix their albums with spatial audio/Dolby atmos in mind.
Also, spatial audio works better with some types of music better than others. In rock/metal, there is an intended wall of sound to create a rocking sound - separating the instruments weakens that wall of sound effect and makes it sound “thin.” For classical, R&B, Jazz, the spatial audio effect works more naturally.

These were the perfect upgrade for me. My 1st gen Airpods were on the way out, I don't like in-ears. When I'm wearing earphones I don't want noise cancellation because I'm running and need to hear cars or I'm in the office and want to still hear someone if they call me. When I want ANC I have my Bose QC35. Initial impressions after a couple of days; the sound quality is so much better than my old ones! I like the Spatial audio but its a bit annoying cos sometimes I like the effect and sometimes I don't so I'm constantly having to pull my phone out if I have a playlist with different genre's. In typical Apple style it's one of those recommendations were if you are a couple of generations behind then the upgrade is worth it or if you are buying airpods for the first time. If you have the pro's or even a working 2nd gen you can just not bother until they break.
