  • Every time I take a cruise I see guests making mistakes that could cost them a lot of time and money. I've been cruising since I was 11 and in that time I've seen the outcomes of people making these mistakes, and learnt how to avoid them.
In this video, I talk about a few of the worst cruise mistakes I've seen on cruises in recent years and how to avoid making them.

On the power warning you noted, one other other thing worth mentioning. The difference between plug adapters and converters. On our first trip to UK, my wife grabbed a US to UK plug adapter out of my bag, WITHOUT the voltage converter attachment, and when the 230V power hit her 115V curling iron, meltdown! She never made that mistake again, but first timers could.

We always unpack our suitcases at the start of the cruise. Then put one of the larger suitcases in the closet with the zipper open toward the top. That way we can put our dirty closes in it when we change. Then by the end of the cruise we just have to pack the closes that we didn’t use in the smaller suitcase with our toiletries and we are ready to go. Usually there isn’t much left to pack by the of the cruise by doing this.

I have always done this for as long as I can remember. Each night after dressing for bed, I refold what I wore that day and start the packing process. It just works! Bring a plastic bag for other dirty things like underwear. Also, bring one for wet clothes in case swimsuits or coverups are not dry by the time you pack the final items.
Two other things that I always bring are a small plug-in night light if you are staying in an inside cabin. It's very dark in there! It tends to make me sleep later than I normally would. Who wants to miss any part of their vacation?! The other must-have is a flashlight. One cruise I was on with RCCL...the power went off during our dining time. One of the engines had blown. People were screaming and chaos begin! I was only 1 floor up and my cabin was right by the elevators. I made it to my cabin and retrieved my flashlight. People were sitting in the halls next to the wall. Running lights were all you could see. When I came out with the flashlight, people start cheering and clapping. They asked me how in the world would I have thought to bring one. I told them it was for just this type of moment!

Great advice! I've often Googled my specific cabin number and gotten images and CZcams videos, so you can often get an actual walkthrough of the stateroom you will be in; if not, you can usually find the same category on the specific ship. I caught that we were booked in an obstructed room one time that an inexperienced travel advisor hadn't and was able to rebook us a deck up in the same category. Especially if you haven't cruised in that category, have never cruised before, or haven't cruise a particular line, it's a great way to set your expectations. Storage and bathroom size were the biggest shocks to me. Research ahead of time- bottom line.

What exactly is the difference in 'obstructed room' experience? The photos made it look like you'd just have a life boat or similiar hanging outside your little porthole windows. Is that really all?
I would personally be using a cabin as a place to sleep, not sit on the bed and stare out the window for 4 hours at a time... I'm the same way at Disney land and world vacations, I don't book a super ultra fancypants room because I'm going to vacation in my hotel room... I'm going to sleep there. And sleeping involves having your eyes closed. So I really don't care how luxurious the hotel room is. I care how comfortable the bed is and if I can have a good hot shower in the morning (as opposed to a trickle where I have contort myself to get the water into all the places.) So, if an obstructed view cabin is just having something blocking the view of the water from my room, I'm not going to care much. If I want a view I'll go find a place on the deck to sit. And if I need quiet, I'll pop in some earbuds and play some of my favorite classical composers (or maybe some Daft Punk depending on my mood, I have an ecclectic taste in music!)

    • @amybrock2592
      @amybrock2592 Před 3 lety +1

@@ShalmendoGlineux Sure, if you only use the room to sleep, not a big deal. The difference in pricing between an obstructed balcony and a non-obstructed was so minimal that we decided to move. We actually do use our balcony daily. The lifeboat in this case covered about half the view- it was directly below. Obviously, we all have different styles of vacationing. We're older and have put in our time in cramped rooms and crappy apartments. We also don't get a lot of time off, so we go for quality over quantity. Everyone has their priorities and they all aren't the same. I traveled the way you do when I was in my 20's. Inside staterooms are fine for the "just there to sleep" trips, for sure!

A frequent issue is that people think adapters make the appliences work with with the socket but really they just change the socket it self, but not the voltage on that socket. A thing to keep in mind so you wont let your stuff go boom.

Many items these days are dual voltage (i.e 110 AND 220V). Camera and laptop chargers are good examples of this. They even cope with the 50Hz vs 60Hz thing with no issues. Having said that, you should always check before you plug it in.

Another cruise packing caution: drones. You can usually bring them, but security will confiscate them when you board. They’ll give them back to you in ports so you can use them, and then recheck them for you on re-boarding. Not a big problem, just something to be aware of if you want drone videos.

The worst mistake we ever made was arriving at our cruise with two of our grandchildren who needed their birth certificates which we didn’t have. The cruise line info said they would not need passports but never mentioned any other IDs. Fortunately, we were sailing from our home town and able to track down the necessary documents that could be FAXED to the cruise terminal. But we were greatly delayed getting on board. Our cabin was very small for the 4 of us and once the steward had made up the kid’s bunks didn’t put them up again even though we asked. Bit of a nightmare actually. Carnival-don’t think I’d try it again.

Example: sea sick pills (a must have), Paracetamol, plasters, antihistamine cream for insect bites etc. I always put together a basic first aid kit to take along because buying such things on board as you say is very expensive and secondly I met a lady on my last cruise who needed a simple bandage from the medical centre for her own use (forgot her knee support) and they were charging over £100 for an item you can buy in Boots the chemist for under a £5

Oh my goodness, so embarrassing! This one of the reason they won't let you have something like a clothes iron. They have to have their fire alarm system over sensitized so they can catch fires early. ANY fire on board a ship could easily, and quickly, turn into a major catastrophe, and where are the guests going to go? They have to be super stringent about fire safety on a cruise because of how tightly everything is packed together. Fires can spread very very quickly, I'd say almost dramatically, in the right environment. Look up a video on how quickly a house fire can spread (some fire departments have done example videos to demonstrate it) and imagine it going several times faster! There would hardly be any time to stop the fire before it had done major damage and probably caused an injury or more. Sorry it had to be so embarrassing though!

I always wondered if there was something like Poundland in the UK. Over here in the US, we have Dollar Tree. They've, controversially and unfortunately, had to raise their max prices to $1.25, up from a dollar, but that's not their fault. It's due to the times.
You can usually find food, drink, and plenty of knickknacks that may prove helpful there. No UK adaptors though that I've seen.

I also recommend a special multi-plug made for cruise ships. It doesn't have a surge protector, which isn't allowed on ships. Mine is from Amazon. It has 3 U.S. plugs and 2 USB ports and the adapter fits into one U.S. outlet.

Yep! Great advice. For anybody reading this and wanting to learn more, I wrote this post about what’s allowed: emmacruises.com/cruise-lines-power-strips-alternatives/ 😀❤️

I travelled to Germany once and stayed in a budget hotel in Munich. The shower glass wall is right next to the bed and the only privacy you get is a blurred film strategically placed on the shower glass wall which may or may not cover your private bits depending on how tall you are...

On our first cruise on the QE2 we brought a travel iron and no one said a word about it. We did find out that it was a useless item to bring on a cruise and it never left home again. On later cruises I got in the habit of bringing along a leatherman multitool for minor luggage repairs etc. Never had a problem until one day we were boarding Queen Elizabeth in Southampton. My leatherman tool was confiscated because it had a locking blade. I had no Idea that the UK had a law against pocket knives with a locking blade. The officer was very nice and told me that Swiss Army Knives were ok !

Ahhh, yes! No locking allowed. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼

Bloody 'ell! Here in South Africa a Leather man Wave II costs over two thousand rand! I'd hate to have one and have it confiscated! I know you can't take them on planes.

Unknown to me my husband packed a small folding boy scout penknife as I always left string labels on my clothes. We had just settled in the cabin when he got a call to go back to the terminal as it had shown up when they x-rayed his case. He did get to keep it, but we take nail scissors now.

Great suggestion. I seldom travel without a small, folding fruit knife - I will obviously have to forego that on my upcoming first cruise, among other things.

My best friend and I booked an 8 day cruise on the NCL Epic. We had an inside cabin and it felt quite spacious and we liked the bathroom situation worked well for us.

Interesting comment re restricted view cabins. I'm a cruise virgin and booked on Norwegian for a Vietnam/Singapore/Malaysia trip through Love It Book It. When I was speaking to Love It Book It they mentioned that cabins were allocated closer to sail time and I may end up with a restricted view. This was last summer, and maybe the rules have changed since then. Since then the cruise was cancelled by Norwegian and I'm still looking out for my first one, and watching a lot of your videos as my research. Love your channel; really well presented and clearly explained.

This just me, but I always bring a wide shoulder hanger for my dinner jacket or sport jacket. I just can Not stand hanger marks on my jackets. I may also bring my own pants hanger depending on the cruise line. enjoy your videos. stay safe and cruise happy.

Back when I packed a suit (I no longer own a suit ha ha) I would use a suit hanger. It had the long pants clip and wide shoulders for the jacket. I would never cram a suit in a suitcase - no matter that call it a suitcase... 😎
