- Harvest Moon DS and DS Cute are two farming and life sim games developed by Marvelous Interactive. Both were released in 2005 in Japan. Very glitchy games. Are they worth it anyway?

In my opinion, this game was the peak of the series. Sure, it's glitchy, but the moment to moment gameplay is the best.

@@hillarydinh9210 only the mermaid! If you make the duck pond and don’t save every night, because she lives in the duck pond sometimes it will fall apart in a storm and she will be gone 😭
Also Celia canonically gets sick in the rain but she will just stay inside on rainy days she’s not going to disappear from the game or anything

Old games were brutal lmao! I played ds cute, I didn’t even realise the boy versions could marry the mermaid, princess, etc!
This is my favorite Harvest Moon game of all time. I wish it was talked about more. I like grindy games, so all that effort required to find all the sprites was right up my alley. The grindy mines, everything. I liked the characters, events, music, and I wish they brought back Leia into the new story of seasons wonderful life remake!! 😭 Maybe they will do a true Forget Me Not Valley DS CUTE remake. I miss the character portraits too.
You can play it again with rom emulator on pc !
I remember running into the glitch where fishing sprites generate an entire nations worth of money over night at the beach after a few years of playing and that was the only way I was ever able to afford the duck pond. The game was grindy (perhaps too much so), but at least you always had something to work towards that will take longer than a year in game to achieve. I liked it a lot. Gave me years of enjoyment as a child.
This is one of those integral games of my childhood, I can't say I ever progressed much but it holds a special place in my heart. Seeing all the quirks and glitches of the game really brought back some funny memories haha. I do hope it gets a remaster/remake and we can go to mineral town, it was a bit of a bummer when the sprite stopped you. Great review!
Same here! I never even got married in mine yet, I really wanna dig it out and play again. There was just so so much to do! And I remember always looking things up online about different mine levels, birthdays, different heart events etc. i wrote them down in a notebook. I didn’t want to miss anything! Which made me play very slowly since I liked to be planned and prepared.
I replayed ds and ds cute recently, these are some of my fav games of all time. There’s just so much to do!!
I never got my kid all grown up in any of my play throughs though. I also appreciate you can marry the mineral town guys in cute and keep playing. I really was not into any of the valley boys. I would love a remake of this game but I feel like they won’t do it… one can dream

I freakin love this game, and I wish more people liked it. I really hope it gets a remake, i like the touch screen petting and stuff but that puts some wear and tear on the DS screens 😂 I got a specific DS for this game in face. It’s old and scratched to bits but it’s so full of memories. I think this game is better than stardew valley, we’ll it would be if the “best friend” system was still a thing lol. If they made a remake on this game I’d buy it in a heart beat and call out of work for the release date.

I had both mfom and cute, but never knew you could unlock more by inserting the cartridge! Now I feel like I was missing out all those years back 😂😂

Cute and tree of tranquility are my favorite harvest moon games. I was really young when I played cute so I didn’t know how to do anything lol. They said look for sprites and I walked around town looking for the soda cans 😂. I’ve been meaning to replay it since I’m older now.
I have to 2 cute cartridges. Each of them have 0’s before the J and the last digits are 41 and 20. You think these copies are good?

Since they're Cute and not the boy version, most of the glitches should be fixed regardless of the numbers.

I agree with you. I wish there were more 'weird/strange' marriage candidates and more 'weird/strange' characters.
That is the one thing I don't like about the AWL remake. All the unique characterisations feel, watered down and washed away.
Got this in my recommended even though I never even played harvest moon lol. I gotta say there is something extremely nostalgic about yt videos where the game footage is still captured with a camera 😂Nice vid though. Keep up the good work.

this game is so nostalgic for me since i grew up playing it a LOT. i recently picked up ds cute again and have been enjoying it even a decade later :)

This was a really great review, and definitely makes me want to pick up the game again 😂 I was obsessed with Leia and Sky as a kid…but after I married Sky I accidentally saved over the file and basically rage quit because the game was already pretty hard compared to other hm titles (and I was obsessed with magical melody so I had that to fall back on lol)

Getting emotional listening to this, realizing that this game while I was in school was the only real escape from reality I ever had 😅 it was a whole vibe. I remember staying in my ingame house during stormy days trying to make the most of it by growing things in the basement and making phone calls, hoping my farm was gonna be okay whenever the storm was over...and falling in love with a mermaid lol

Anyone who doesn’t have this game. I urge you to give it a try. Yes it’s hard in the beginning but if your smart about what you accomplish in the beginning will give you a large leap to milking the system of the game and having everything come easy.
My biggest start of game goals are
Sell majority of produce to van everyday that ends in 3 or 8
get the maker shed
Get the seed maker (leveling up crops to make more money)
Unlock both hot springs
Unlock to the third mine
Use fishing team to help unlock other fishing team members easier

i wish i could've played ds/ds cute at the time it got released. i've got so many things to say about this game and i feel like most people who have played it forgot what happens exactly on the game, making it almost impossible to share experiences and such.
i mean, there's still people who talk about skye here and there and that's great, 'cause he's absolutely my favorite bachelor of all time, but it's still not enough, y'know?
i think ds cute might be my favorite harvest moon/story of seasons game! it has such a different and cozy atmosphere to me, so that's really a shame.
I feel that a lot for a lot of things. It's sad how people stop talking as much about things you're still very into. I’ve read through a lot of old threads for Harvest Moon games that I would've liked to be a part of if I had internet at the time. People will talk about DS some on Reddit. I like when people are still shocked to learn about Mason.

i've played some other titles before, but i'm still very new in the hm/sos franchise. i just started playing ds cute for the first time and i didn't know about mason, so that's all news to me, too.
i played ds, but totally ignored ds cute until this year, because i thought it would only have the same characters/bachelors. so, when i saw skye on the marriage candidates list, i instantly knew i had to do it for him.
and, i'm a person that likes to play as a male character on most games.
can't wait for the day when we get a ds remake with same-sex marriage, so i can marry skye and be who i am. ♡
I really hope they do remake it so you can do that! Skye is a favorite of mine too. And since he and the other special candidates were new and not anyone's descents, I would want them to look more or less the same as they already look. Skye and Leia are already perfect to me.

skye is already a pretty boy, so i don't think they will change him too much like they did with the bachelors on the a wonderful life remake.
i mean, some of those guys were way too far from being attractive and that's probably why they even added skye in ds cute, hehe.
but yeah, leia and skye are perfect, so i hope they keep their looks almost the same as before.

Sadly this game, or any HM game, doesn't have enough passionate fans for it. It's perfect for a pc port with more enhancements. The original screen is too small and the days are too short, that's just for start.
You can play it on pc with an emulator! Im starting it tomorrow ! Or maybe ill play back to nature first

If it wasn’t glitchy it would be perfect
This is why I prefer playing the game on an emulator. Save states avoid a ton of the save bugs, and I can play on a big screen with a proper controller.

I was like 16 when this came out and idk why I just wasn’t interested at the time for HMDS or Cute. I remember once having a chat with someone about it and how they put the blonde girl from MFoMT on the box art but you play as Pony/Poni instead, and then the character sprite is sort of a combo of both character designs, strange lol. I’ve seen no mention of that since a chat I had ages ago.
A remake would be so sick. The european version of that game was so butchered its unfair. And Imagine: 25 Mariage candidates. I would love it if they add special designs to all of the kids like in the awl remake. Maybe they add Cody pardon gordy being a bachelor aswell. Oh yeah and they should fix the glitches also XD
I started using my second safe files as back up saves, because my game (esp the boy version) has corrupted on me so many times before

Darn. The copy of DS I have now is actually my second copy, as I had sold my original copy years back, and it's a 0 before the J, while I swear my original copy was a 1. Might have to hit ebay for a 1 copy again, as DS was the first game in this series I ever played, and holds just so much nostalgia for me, jank and all. (0J20 to be exact BTW on the cart code.)
Great video ! It's the first game I ever got. I'm a bit sad I played it as a child because I missed so much stuff ! This game has a ton of things to offer, and if I was older, I'm sure I would've went far into the game. Instead, I never finished it sadly. It was too difficult !
Are there other Harvest Moon games that are z bit like this one ?
A guess it depends on which parts of the game you liked most.
A Wonderful Life, which got remade recently, takes place in the same valley with more or less the same weird characters, but the gameplay is completely different. Short seasons, more realistic animals, and a lot of focus on raising your kid. It's my favorite.
Friends of Mineral Town, which also has a remake, shares some characters and has more similar gameplay, but it has a little less to do than DS. Very peaceful though.
I feel like Magical Melody might actually be the most similar to DS, maybe? It has the classic farm mechanics, collecting music notes the same way you collect sprites, and you have to decide when and where to place your barns and coops like in DS instead of them already being there, and you get way more land to work with. The characters look a little odd though.

This seemed more as an overview/tips guide than a review, but still entertaining! I've always wanted to play these games, but never did, even tho I played both FoMT and AWL
I can only hope this gets the same remake treatment!

I was in, I believe, year 12 when my save file got corrupted. (Probably due to the use of the infamous Action Replay)

I actually got the old version of it and the only glitch I remember is the Infinite money glitch and my mermaids wife just disappearing after a storm XD haven’t gotten any game braking glitches while playing

I think if they did change the appearance of DS characters for a remake, they would probably just do an art style change like AWL Remake. Which is fine but I just hope they keep Japanese names (which looking at AWL remake, they would). Natsume was such a shit translation company lol I am so glad xseed is in charge now.
I never knew there was a girl version! But well, I guess the normal game was a small step towards the bi awakening. And I dont know how often I accidentally overwrote my savefile bc I was checking out my sisters... They should have used a different way of saving and choosing the savefile
My cartridge gave me 100 milks eveytime i milked my cows. I am okay with it.
FOMT is my favorite game in the series. I did play both DS and Cute like 10+ years ago and was really intrigued by the abundance of features. Sadly, they are buggy and unbalanced messes. I think if they had put in a little more time and effort to polish the games could have been a Stardew-like breakthrough at the time. DS cute is harder to break, so I played it the most. Financially the game is very unbalanced and you can more or less get unlimited money by just using the casino for a few hours. Sadly a lot of extremely useful tools come from the casino so you'll want to play it anyway. If you want to enjoy the games features I suggest self-imposing some restrictions, such as not being allowed to sell anything from the casino.
