- A question I often receive from folks who are "building out" their ACWs on the website is, "What's the difference between the ring hammer and the delta hammer". Well, functionally, nothing... but since you asked, let's go on a journey through some of the hammer designs for 1911 throughout the past century.
We at ACW are committed to preserving the heritage of the classic 1911 pistol. Our appreciation of the history of this gun fuels our passion for creating timeless, functional art pieces that you can enjoy on the range or in a holster by your side day to day.
Join us as we celebrate the Model of 1911 pistol and John Moses Browning's achievement in designing a pistol still in use over a century after its inception. We at ACW are proud to be among the American companies still producing this iconic firearm.

I only own military style 1911s, so they have spur hammers.
One feature of the 1911 that I love is that when you pull the hammer back to de-cock it, the spur depresses the grip safety. This enables you to de-cock the pistol one-handed.
This is pretty much obsolete now, since de-cocking the hammer is not viewed as good practice, but I just love how well thought-out the design is.
I'm not sure if this feature still works on 1911s with ring or delta hammers, but I guess it doesn't really matter either way.
yep... I only like the old spur hammer and hate extended beavertail. I don't care how in it is to carry cocked and locked I still carry with hammer down on a live round and cock on the draw just like every revolver I own. The 1911 works like a ....... Colt. meaning it is safe safe safe. once you dissengage the hammer take your damn finger off the trigger! Alec Baldwin lied.. people died. The reasons for an extended beavertail do not interest me nor have any use for me..just make a good looking gun ugly. On my early kimber I ground the ugly thing down to a somewhat ok looking and functioning (for me) size. I might experiment with welding up the ugly and useless hammer on the gun even.
“Anyone who doesn’t like the ring hammer is not invited to the quinceanera” That pretty much sums up how I feel
You can take that to the bank.
Ring hammers are the way to go for most carry situations and the spur is great for comp or just being a tough guy.
I do like being a tough guy, bleeding all over the range.
Be the hero we need in a sea of modern 1911s. Bring back the spur hammer! Government length 1911s and spur hammers go together like America and freedom
I would love to see spur hammers on our guns... maybe one day...
100%
Hopefully
Great lesson! Thanks for the education. Never really knew the difference. Keep up the good work
That Clark custom melt down is beautiful.
I'm late to the show here tonight. Going back to the beginning to hear the whole story. thank you for this topic
So when someone hears you tell a buddy, "you should have put a ring on it" you mean this and not THAT.
Ring hammer is pretty based though
most based.
I had a Wilson Accucomp LE 45 in hard chrome built in 1985. The ring hammer in this pistol had a smaller hole than the one you showed here, but they had put a big bevel on each side of the hole with a 45 degree countersink for a more distinctive look. It was cool, wish I still had that one...
Great content Duck.
Bring back the spur! #hammerbyte
Hammer bite made us MEN.
I made my choice: Ring Hammer!
THE CORRECT ANSWER.
@@alchemy1911 Yes, but I have a flat trigger. I could be crossing the line into heresy.
Ring hammer and commander go together like peanut butter and jelly. It’s just natural. What God has joined together let no man put asunder.
Cocked and Locked was mandated in the 1940 army manual for the 1911 pistol on page 19, but only in conditions that required it.
I'm referring to the original patent and army doctrine when the pistol came out. Moreover, I have never met a vet that said they carried cocked and locked EVER.
I carried cocked and locked. Colt combat commander. In a Jack ass shoulder holster. And OLD DEVIL DOG
If you like it put a ring on it as a wise man once said regarding 1911’s
Ring hammer, if I can’t have you I don’t want nobody baby!
My first gun was a 1911-A1. Still have it. Was an Auto Ordinance Competition Model. I have taken that pistol to the fullest extent it can go for customizing.
That was over 30 years ago.
So… what do I daily carry?
My 2 daily carry guns actually are built by me. I was going through my “lock time” experience as I built them. Perfect exact 3 pound triggers.
Rock Island GI Frame and Slide, and Evolution Gun Works everything else.
They look like WWII GI 5” guns, but they are state of the art.
What do I carry on special occasions?
Either my WWI Colt, or my Remington 100 year model.
Not even going to talk “apocalypse carry”
I’ve gone full spectrum. I have done it all, but now as I’m oldand arthritic, I’m back to the classic.
Edit: the 2 carry guns mentioned above are using tool steel titanium alloy Spur hammers, and titanium lockup.
Can I tell the difference? I used to be able to, but not anymore.
I have biggish hands XL gloves but not fat hands. I have never had a slide on any gun bite me. For sure my newish Governments never have nor could. Good catch on the Mauser ring hammer.
Commander hammers are visually pleasing and perfectly functional.
I have a Colt Delta Elite… hate the hammer, it just doesn’t look right.
I actually prefer the look of the delta hammer, but I wouldn't change one for that reason.....
I replaced the Delta hammer on my 31 year old Colt 1991A1 last year with an old Commander ring hammer that I’ve had for years. It’s been on there for decades. My two Commanders had their ring hammers replaced with STI hammers that had the more square shape. Unfortunately those two pistols are long gone.
Even the spur hammer is preferable to the delta hammer.
Ring Hammer 🤘🏻
RING hammer ☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
Well watching these videos and Eli saying “ring hammer, ring hammer, ring hammer”… thats all I want on my alchemy’s. Both the Quantico and the new purchase a prime cmr have ring hammers! Eli it does look sexy with a ring on it. LOL
Damn right!
Ring hammer always
I prefer delta hammers. I just like them better.
So... We use ring hammers here!
Ring hammer family.
I like’m both 😂
Us big thumb brothers need the Delta hammer #ManCard . All hail Steve Nastoff 🤣
If I had girl thumbs I would definitely go with the ring hammer #ManCardDenied
My brother in Christ, why are you thumbing the hammer on the gun in 2024.
@@alchemy1911 Well, Um... you know 🤣
Ya see, I learned on a M1911. NOT the M1911A1.... I learned on the OG. Real wood grips. The straighter grip. I don't care what the hammer is anymore, you learn how to shoot with a man grip and not flinch.
If the Delta hammer is the wrong hammer for your guns, why do you offer it?
put me in that group that thinks ring hammers are ugly the only way to make a 1911 more ugly is one of those clown extended beavertails. like putting bright red lipstick and purple eye shadow on the Mona Lisa
😂😂😂
Ring hammer, if I can’t have you I don’t want nobody baby!
