  • In honor of October being National Country Music Month, American Songwriter hosted a conversation between Vince Gill and ERNEST at our Nashville office. In the nearly hour-long chat, the pair discussed their musical journeys and the long road to their respective Opry debuts. They also shared humorous tales of writing with Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Dean Dillon, hearing their songs reinterpreted through AI, Merle Haggard’s lasting impact, and much more.

I've been a fan of Vince Gill for 28 years and have seen him in concert several times...once he played the "Patsy Cline" Theatre in my hometown which is a venue that is really too small for him, but for some reason, he came to play in Winchester, Virginia with his phenomenal band. He played and told stories for 3 hours and 9 minutes...make no mistake. I have never seen ANY concert (and I have been fortunate to attend over 100--and counting of all genre's of music) and I have never laughed and cried and felt my soul as full as that night. His vocals have been even better live than on any record each time that I have seen him. He is a guitar wizard. My most important characteristic of Vince is his ability to connect to EVERY audience every single time I have seen him whether in a crowd of 18,000 or at the Patsy Cline Theatre that might hold 2500-2800 people. It's one thing to be a Hall Of Fame Songwriter, but his connection while delivering those songs is absolutely second to NONE! They don't make 'em like Vince any more. As a first tenor myself, covering a Vince song is always a stop-in-your tracks moment because of him. "When My Amy Prays" is such a personal song!! Everything from "One More Last Dance" to "Whenever You Come Around" to "Never Knew Lonely" for his daughter. LOVE THIS INTERVIEW!!

Hello from Pennsylvania!! Love your story!! My mother was from Winchester, VA, and her family knew Patsy Cline really well. I've seen Vince play live as well. He's amazing!!

Vince probly needed to live a bit before he could write.
When you recorded letter to my mother it came out a day after I finally wrote my mom a letter after 30 years of getting letters from her and I had that song in my head a day before I heard it and even wrote notes to write a song about it. She passed shortly after my letter and she was the same age as your mom. Thanks for stealing my song it was great and couldn't believe it.
