I think it’s more than just the circumcision thing. Let’s also consider that the Lord has spent many years prepping Moses this mission, and 5 times Moses refuses. After the 5th time we see that the Lord became ‘angry with Moses’. (Exodus 4:14). Moses agrees to do the task and yet what’s the first thing he does? He goes back home to ask for his father in laws permission. And he’s probably procrastinating as we see the Lord has to remind him of his duty and reassure him again in 4:19. Lastly instead of going in faith and trusting the Lords
promise that Aaron will meet him (again, 4:14), he takes his family along- slowing everything further and putting them in unnecessary danger. Moses isn’t following God and isn’t keeping his end of the bargain up. He’s not in the Lords good books. And having his uncircumcised son on the mission was the icing on the cake. I think this is the Lord giving Moses a stern reprimand- similar to Jonah not doing what’s asked and being swallowed by a fish.
This may seem harsh, but let’s not forget -firstly this is important stuff- both Moses and Jonah are the lynchpins God is using to liberate entire NATIONS from evil- and secondly, Moses has SEEN the Angel of the Lord (Jesus) and has heard him speak audibly. He has witnessed to burning bush and other incredible miracles already. Imagine seeing God like this and still not doing what he asks!

I was just reading this passage yesterday and thinking about it. I think the rejection of Moses not wanting to speak also added to this since Moses angered the LORD when he didn't trust in Him to be able to speak properly so they had to get Aaron to be the mouthpiece, so God was already mad and the lack to follow the law of circumcision was the final straw.

Though Moses should have performed the circumcision and even more than Moses' hypocrisy and his calling to be a spiritual leader of Israel, God's reaction underscores the most paramount point here and that is that God....is.....serious.....about His covenant and how sin (disobedience) can have deadly consequences. Jeremiah 4:4..........
    “Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
And remove the foreskins of your heart,
Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Or else My wrath will go forth like fire
And burn with none to quench it,

For Moses the covenant was too 'prescriptive' and Moses represents the 'modern' educated man who thinks he got all figured out. For sure circumcision will have some benefits but Moses did not understand them and under the influence of the Satan refuses to follow God's instruction and disregarded them as 'useless'. A common example in modern time is the creation of the universe by God. Jesus came to provide an alternative more suitable to mankind. It's described in the Lord Prayer.

Shalom man of God and many blessings to you and to your beautiful families (personal/ministries).
I too wondered for the longest about that event. I did not understand why God was moving in that fashion against Moses, until I understood God's stand on covenant.
The LORD takes covenant seriously, because He is loyal and faithful to those whom He enter into relationships with, especially when we do not uphold the same posture towards Him. He is committed to having a nature that is constructed in giving language to Him being trustworthy in the relationships and bonds that He builds with His people.
So I can see now why He would come at Moses in that fashion. Because an uncircumcised male identifies with an image that is aligned with carnality and sin. And God created man to stand out in His image and be set apart, which is what a circumcised male identifies with in God's kingdom. Circumcision gave prophetic language to the male identifying with an image that is consecrated and marked by His kingdom bloodline and legacy. Thank you for sharing this man of God. Shalom

In Exodus 4:24-26, a perplexing episode unfolds where God seemingly intends to kill Moses. This troubling incident, shrouded in ambiguity within the text, appears to stem from Moses' failure to fulfill a crucial aspect of his covenant with God: the circumcision of his son. As Moses embarks on his journey to lead the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt, he encounters a moment of reckoning at a lodging place along the way, where the Lord confronts him with imminent danger.
The narrative unfolds with Zipporah, Moses' wife, taking swift action to circumcise their son with a flint knife and touching Moses' feet with the foreskin as part of the ritual. This act prompts God to relent from His initial intention to kill Moses, indicating that the sin of uncircumcision was the primary transgression at play.
The significance of circumcision within the covenant established with Abraham is pivotal to understanding the severity of Moses' oversight. God had explicitly commanded Abraham and his descendants to undergo circumcision as a sign of their covenant relationship. Moses, as a descendant of Abraham, was expected to adhere to this covenant obligation.
The failure to circumcise his son is emblematic of Moses neglecting his heritage and covenant responsibilities, potentially due to his prolonged stay as a shepherd in Midian. This oversight not only undermines Moses' credibility as a spiritual leader but also compromises the integrity of his mission to lead the circumcised people of God out of Egypt.
Furthermore, Moses' role as the lawgiver for Israel necessitates his adherence to the laws he is meant to impart. His failure to uphold such a fundamental aspect of the covenant renders him unfit to lead spiritually.

27 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. 29 In those days they shall say no more:
‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
    A New Covenant
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, [h]though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their [i]hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
    35
    Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
    Who disturbs the sea,
    And its waves roar
(The Lord of hosts is His name):
    36
    “If those ordinances depart
From before Me, says the Lord,
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease
From being a nation before Me forever.”
    37 Thus says the Lord:
“If heaven above can be measured,
And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
I will also cast off all the seed of Israel
For all that they have done, says the Lord.
38 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that the city shall be built for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 The surveyor’s line shall again extend straight forward over the hill Gareb; then it shall turn toward Goath. 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord. It’s possible God wanted to give him a chance to realize what he needed to do on his own.
I don’t think God changed his mind- He knows everything so He would know that Moses would eventually do it and He would not kill him. Maybe God tried to kill Moses (let him get really sick) so that he could see how serious God was about the covenant.

I think when God gives a blunt warning, it sounds strong, but it’s out of love for that person to make it right. If God wanted to, He could immediately rest someone. If God makes a claim about killing someone in that manner, it’s an alarm. Naturally, we’re going to say, “What! What did I do! How can I make this right?” It allows that person to do the right thing so God won’t have to carry it out. Which I don’t think He wanted to do it being the reason He told him. Remember when God spoke to King Abimelech stopping him from touching Abraham’s wife Sarah? He said, “You’re a dead man.” It stopped King Abimelech from having relations with Sarah. Abimelech told God he didn’t know Sarah was taken in clear conscience. God said He knew and that’s why He didn’t allow him to sin against Him. It sounds harsh, but God uses words that get our attention to save us.

I get that but my problem is couldn’t God have cautioned him or reminded him to do the circumcision than choose to kill him?
This also tells me what women could do in those days, for Ziporah to be able to identify the reason God wanted to kill Moses is very intriguing and then again for the fact that she could circumcise her son by herself is astonishing, however if Ziporah isn’t an Israelite how did she know about the covenant? There’s a lot of question I have with this particular scripture but I’ll settle with your explanation for now and continue to research.

Not only did Moses likely not circumcise his son but he did not see to it all males that wandered in the desert were circumcised. Josh 5:2 says Joshua, after Moses was dead, made sure that all males were circumcised before they entered the Promised Land to take it over, indicating a whole lot more of the generation that wandered the desert were not circumcised under Moses’ leadership. So, even though Moses was a great Biblical leader, he did have some shortcomings. Just like David (Bathsheba affair), Abraham (Hagar affair), Solomon turning into a tyrant, etc. Still, God loved these Biblical characters and showed His immense love and patience towards them.

It is true that these three verses obscure the identity of whom will die, but these three verses make no mention of Moses. It would defy reason that God would kill his messenger to liberate the Hebrews from Pharaoh right after He gave him the mission to go back to Egypt and speak to Pharaoh. Circumcision is the rite of admittance into the community of Israel, but there no where does it mention its lack is meted with death.
Instead, the verses that precede 24-26 discuss the death of the firstborn, so it would make sense that Moses' inaction to circumcising his firstborn Gershon imperiled his life. The link of shedding blood and averting disaster is communicated multiple times through the Paschal lamb and circumcision, and so would point to Moses' firstborn's life that was afflicted with an ailment. God was never going to kill his messenger.

According to Peter (I Peter 3:15 & 16), Paul wrote some things that are hard to understand.
The idea that physical circumcision was intended to be a symbol of circumcision of the heart didn’t first appear in the book of Acts (chapter 7 verse 51). It is mentioned in Leviticus 36:41, Jeremiah 9:26 and Ezekiel 44:7.
Physical circumcision has some benefits from a cleanliness perspective but BY ITSELF, physical circumcision has no spiritual value.
Sometime within the last few years, I heard a preacher say that for a man to be circumcised or to have his son’s circumcision is a denial of the Christian faith.
There are some Bible passages that, taken by themselves, might be construed that way. I think they WERE construed that way in the past by people who believed Jesus to be the true Messiah but who were influenced by their intense hatred of Hebrews (or, more specifically by the intense hatred of the citizens of the Roman Empire toward the Hebrews) to dispense with as many aspects of the religion of the Hebrews as possible.
If someone could persuade me that’s what Paul was trying to say, I’d have to reject Paul as an apostle.
There are other symbols mentioned in the Bible which some people think are efficacious in and of themselves.
While I can agree that the symbols don’t justify, sanctify or glorify anyone, such symbols can have value in the sense of directing people to the underlying spiritual realities.
At the same time, I draw the line at people trying to “require” other people to use or avoid using such symbols. Let each person be fully persuaded in his own mind.

According to the law we do not circumcise while traveling. Once he was in an inn he had to circumcise right away. He may have not done so and attended other things. That's all. May be may be..Moses wife resisted to get her son circumcised despite Moses’s explaination to do it. Moses might have thought not to make it happen by force as he dont want to hurt his wife. He might be in a hand-tied situation how to obey god and how not to force his wife. This could have lead to God’s anger and an attempt to kill Moses for being in confusion what to do (when god’s instruction about circumcision is crystal clear). When it came to the life of her husband, finally she might have gave in and did the circumcision herself and made it touch to her husband’s feet before the Lord kill him.

You can be circumcised and have a wicked heart, and you can be uncircumcised and be transformed by the Holy Spirit. At that point it really doesn’t matter. God gave me a revelation on this passage. It was not Moses it was the first born son of Moses that God was going to slay. This is the context. Not necessarily Pharaoh's first born. In the mind of God Pharaoh's first born was already dead. Also the very scripture used in this video declares that the one who is uncircumcised is the one who will die not the father. Therefore by the very law of God himself it was not Moses that was going to be slain it was the first born son of Moses
