- The next results from my HUGE Soil Experiment are in and today I walk us through which soil performed best for Growing Potatoes! This was another methodically executed potatoes where every variable was kept equal EXCEPT for the Soil that the potatoes were planted into. And after 90 days of growing, I discovered some really incredible results!!

When I saw the sewing chard I noticed that you live in a colder summer climate than where I live (summers June to August are in the 30°s) so for people with the same, look for the temperature more than the actual months~ lets all have beautiful potatoes
I plant potatoes in natural soil , the best I like is silt . I have eighty acres to chose from . Clay or peat should be avoided . I produce my own seed . Time aclimitizes you potatoes for you climate . I cut the seed potatoes in half , taught to me by my old Dad . The stress seams to stimulate the growth, as the plants emerge I hill them , keeps the weeds in check . I continue to hill every week or so until the plants are too big to make it practical . Put the seed in the sun for a few days before planting , warm them up . When harvesting dry the potatoes well before storing in a cool dry , completely dark place , HAPPY PLANTING ! 👍🇨🇦

7:22 - I disagree with covering the leaves as soon as they're out - those are solar panels that the plant needs to feed the roots, etc.. If you feel you really need to intervene (sometimes you don't - simply inspect your potatoes) and hill them up, do that when there's enough foliage so some of it remains above the soil. Give it a try and see what happens.
Could you talk temperatures instead of dates. We've learned in garden classes potatoes like cooler weather. That's why they do good in the cooler nw in the usa.
The reason I'm asking temps instead of dates. I live in Texas June and July are over 100 so generally we don't want to plant then.
My thoughts exactly. Depends on where you are. I say plant as early as you can and plant some every month. Watch and see how they do
I've been watching many videos on growing potatoes, and this is hands down the best video I've watched! The tips and tricks given are amazing, the explanation is very thorough but also precise, I usually would be skipping through videos cuz I have very low patience lol but didn't have to do that with this video.

Please don’t use vermiculite you use perlite instead vermiculite can be contaminated with asbestos

Seed potatoes are the best to use so true .I can testify to that .I will have to give away potatoes this year.
If you could talk temps instead of months it would help much more. We live in dry hot area. If we don't plant early it gets to hot. Love your videos but as this one says nothing about overnight temps or ground temps it's useless for a when to plant guide.
He showed a temp scale at 2:38
As one can see, it's just the opposite at his location with cool summer temps not higer then say 24°C.
So, try to convert that for your own, or find a advisor fitting better to your needs.

Great tips!!! You could have mentioned determinate vs indeterminate varieties. You don't need to hill up determinate potatoes. They grow only in one layer.
I would also recommend cutting off the flowers to direct all the growth towards the potatoes

Planting in July in Florida would be a unique way to make baked potatoes, lol. What you wouldn't get is a crop, since tubers stop developing after it hits somewhere in the 90s.

u can use organic potatoes those are not sprayed with anything, however if u want u can soak the potatoes or any other store bough vegie in water for 24 hours and that will remove the inhivator ..

lol@22° C as a high temp in July. Houston high temps in July are 37.22° C.
We are forced to grow from mid Feb - mid Jun. We only get a fraction of the long days & the temp is already getting too warm for tuber growth by mid June (in most years).
To get your growing conditions, I'd have to start my potatoes in pots by mid Dec in artificial light & controlled temp conditions through mid Feb & harvest them by mid Apr. So much for being cost effective... lol
I plant potatoes very early and do fine. The first round aren't big, but they are still very good and I still have time to plant a later crop and get those "bakers" for the summer

Good tips! I have a potato that's sprouted and even has some thin roots but I have it on moist paper towel in a plastic container right now. If I decide to plant it in a grow bag what size bag do you recommend?
Temps? I live in the south fl, when I see videos I do what they say durning the months and everything gets crispy 😂 so temps would be ideal when gardening for my zone thank you love your content

So, we are growing taters in 15 gallon containers, they are 17 inches deep by aprox 16 inches wide. How would you do it? I;m thinking now...put 10 inches of compost/soil in, plant the taters 8 inches deep (2 inches below the surface) and then mulch them with straw or more soil...what do you think? I dont want to have to fill them up...we have MANY of them. Also, how many taters per container? 2 or 3? Thankyou!!

Have you ever toyed with vermiculite granule size? I’m curious if there would be different end results with a coarser vermiculite than a finer and vice versa. And then perlite va vermiculite would also be very interesting. I absolutely love your channel. I love your perspective and experimental approach. I want to be a worker in your garden. Are you hiring?
good tipe for watering, give it a good soaking, wait 10 minutes and then give it another good soaking.
How long should I be sprouting the potatoes before transplanting them outside? Also how far apart should I plant the potatoes? Any differences if I grow them in grow bags (25 gallon)?
Where do you get all of that beautiful compost? You seem to have an endless supply.
Great question Emily! I get mine from a local supplier called Sea to Sky Soils. However, if you aren't in the Sea-to-Sky area what you want to do (if buying in bulk) is find a nursery or soil depot that sells it by the yard. And then ask them for their 100% Compost Ammender. Ideally, make sure it is OMRI Organic Certified (this is the governing body). And lastly, if you want bonus points once you get it home sift it through a 1/2" sift. This will remove any larger particles, giving you a really beautiful medium to work with :). Those steps are exactly what I do for my larger volumes of compost!

I love your energy and your passion. For wanting to grow potatoes. But you should use perlite instead of vermiculite, because vermiculite is very oftentimes contaminated with asbestos. If the bag doesn’t say asbestos, free, or tested for asbestos, don’t buy the vermiculite.

What do I do when my potatoe plant just doesn't seem to die back completely. For example I planted potatoes in a greenhouse once and when the plant started to show signs of dying back new shoots where starting to come up. I eventually just dug it up after about a year after being planted. It was one of my better harvests. I dug up a purple potatoe that was the size of a Yukon potatoe. Now it was the only one that size but there was a lot of other decent sizes as well

I’ve read to use seed potatoes and to cut out all but 2 eyes. Is that true? After cutting I let the potatoes “cure” till they seal off the cuts.

Doesn’t matter whether variety is determinant versus indeterminant? Determinant only sets tubers at one level, not continually up the stem, right?

I have been using certified seed potatoes for 3 years always had small potatoes and got blight every year. Did 1 year of store potatoes and I never had blight and got the biggest harvest I ever had.

Question, I'm wondering about the conflict between rejuvenating your soil in grow bags by simply adding 25% more compost (and mixing on tarp), and the advice on the bag of do not plant in the same space as the previous year. Do I need to get new soil each year in order to plant my potatoes in grow bags, or can I simply rejuvenate with additional compost? I had no issues with diseases last year.

He doesn't seem to respond to many questions, so I'll respond on this one. My understanding is that vermiculite is a granite that aids in drainage. It's often mixed into clay soil to help the water pass through. Vermiculite actually holds water and helps retain irrigation for soils such as sand. They act completely differently. I would not recommend using them interchangeably. Hope this helped.

Great question! Potatoes tops like warm days and the roots prefer cool nights rather. Rather than hot or cold.
Soil temperature should be at least 4 degrees celsius.
what does 4-4-4 Superfood do ?
Oh it's a wonderfulll organic fertilizer. It has all the macronutrients and micronutrients plants need to thrive. I could not locate vermiculite so I hope using Perlite will do the trick. My seed potatoes are already sprouting; I'm putting them into potato pots for now. The others I will bury into the treated ground next week. A lot or rain in Vancouver, Washington so I'll drag the pots under the carport for now. Thank you for the soil preparation ideas. Onions are next, with the same soil mixture.

I was wondering do u think using warba (60 day potatoes) also increases ur harvest compared to any 100 day potatoes. I ask cause I planted Kennebec(100+days) , Yukon Gold(100+days), and warba (60+days). The warbas did finish way quicker but I don't know if it was worth it. What is your experience in this area? Are u set on warba ? Just curious about your reasoning for choosing warba
@@mattg6472 Great q Matt! To be honest I basically went with Warba because I couldn't get my hands on any Yukon Golds! I prefer Yukon Gold, so I will revert to that next year, however I will likely do a side-by-side comparison with a few Warbas to see what the difference is based on timing. Ideally I'd like to start 3 sets of potatoes: May 1st, June 1st, and July 1st. I'm not sure if I'll have enough growing days for Yukon Gold's to do that, but that's the beauty of experimenting! :D
@@MindandSoil great answer thanks. I really like ur idea of planting three different times (same potato type) to figure out what timing works best. Unfortunately for me I'm in Canada the only way I could try different timing is with warba (60+day) . If I plant Yukon Gold (100+day) it always seems to work out better the earlier I plant them cause we barely have enough days for Yukon in the first place. Are u Canada or States? I really like the results with Kennebec more nice sized potatoes and fewer tiny ones like the other varieties. Also less pitting on the Kennebec and less disease on the plant. Apparently better storage but the taste is not as good as Yukon Gold imo . The warba intrigues me giving me the option for different timings . I'm excited to see ur potato timing experiment next season!😁. Great work keep it up. I been watching u and the soil scientist Ashley lately she's in my area Saskatoon. Do u watch David the good ?
