Overlanding New Mexico’s Largest Wilderness in my new Rav4

- This is the best overlanding in New Mexico hands down. The gila national forest has some of the most epic roads in the state, crossing through canyons and mountain passes, crossing streams and rivers, we finally make the whole gap. A route that’s been in the making for a long time. Accompanied by a land cruiser, two tacomas and a K5, I’m able to test the off-roading capabilities of my new rav4 adventure.
As always thank you all for watching and the support. Should have added this to the video but the tundra is still around just taking some r&r.
If you’d like to plan out routes like this, I suggest onx offroad app, use wdo20 for 20% off!
As a soft roader I appreciate the Rav content. Not everyone can afford a second trail vehicle. Nice to see everything the Rav can do. Hope the Tundra gets its needed TLC.
I had a Rav4 about 8-9 years ago. I understand the logic of why you got it, but it won't stay nice for long out on those trails. Leave the new Toyota-berry for your new job, and wheel with your older one or the Tundra... LOL Thanks for having us along and keep up the great vids!
Oh yeah, not hitting any trails like that again for a while. I was anticipating the majority of the road to be pretty easy going. Didn’t really estimate road conditions after the snow melt off!
... just recently discovered your channel and now cannot stop watching your videos. Oh to be young and carefree; what fun, the camaraderie, the locations. My husband and I travel and fish the high country but stay on the hardtop (he cried upon seeing your truck's "pinstriping" but is impressed by the trucks and all the added features.
Best wishes, stay safe.

Love the K5 square body
Yay Cody! God's Country. I have a Rav too but hesitate to take it off-road 'cause I don't want to get it dirty or scratched. Ha! Love Mela. Love the history. Thanks.
Loved seeing the Mile Marker Selectro Locking hubs on the Blazer. very cool
Just perfection in the views and the history lesson. So much respect for this channel and your efforts, Cody.
Thank you for the appreciation, that’s what keeps me going!
No way! I thought we would be getting the 90s rav content! Not a new one! That’s awesome man. Super excited to see where this Rav takes you. Congrats on the new car
I had to deceive everyone a bit! Loving this car, thanks as always!
Your music choices were very fitting and calming. I'm going to have to do some exploring in my home state when I retire. Thank you for showing the beauty of NM.
Glad you enjoy the tunes, try to keep it laid back and relaxing. I take pride in showing off your home state, it goes so under the radar by most!
Love your channel Cody. We definitely need to see more of that bad ass K5 Blazer.
I like how you guys have nice but not stupid crazy expensive rigs for your adventures. I’m just an old man that spent way too many years working and am trying to make the overlanding learning curve less steep. Could you do a video on basic load outs you use for your trips? Sort of a “you need this gear and you definitely don’t need this” kind of video?
Thank you! Yeah gotta get that k5 out. I’ve been tossing around the idea of doing a load out video of essentials and basic gear for starters. Your comment may just push me to do it!
The best of the best right here
Great video, thanks.
Great video of a beautiful state
Love NM and that new ride...Well Done
Thanks brother!
the Gila never gets old..
Excellent video! Well done.
Thanks my man, as always
Loving the channel! Digging the new ride, too. Never hurts to have a "practical" vehicle in the fleet.
Exactly!
Another great video. I look forward to doing that route this year, once I get back from my east coast vacation.
Thanks Todd, it’s an excellent route for escaping people for a few days
I love my Rav 4 adventure package. I’ve taken it SO many awesome spots. Learning to turn OFF the traction control so I have control while slipping sliding and rock crawling is my only advice. Love your footage.
I figured that out really quick, I actually don’t hate the traction control on this seems somewhat useful but with it off holy crap this thing can handle some tricky terrain!
@@Whitedogoverland absolutely. My son finally just yelled “ turn off the traction control and we pulled out of a gnarly slide in clay. Love the content. Good luck with the new job. No luck needed
Sweet video as always man! Currently working as a forester and recently took my 3rd gen rav off road through old logging roads. It was dicey and now my baby is boasting several new scratches.😅
The 80 series ❤
I stumbled on your channel. Very cool, brother! I've studied the Apache, especially the Chiricahua as well as really diving into everything I can find on Victorio. I'm psyched to be able to see the ancestral lands!! I've always dreamed of going and now thanks to you I feel like I'm there. Be safe🫡
Glad to see others have interest in the same history is do. I can talk for hours on the Apaches. Glad I can bring you along vicariously! Thanks for the sub!
Awesome Video ...
Thank you!
I have a 2019 Rav4 with an ironman 2" lift with falken wildpeak at3 all terrain tires. Even with a full load it does really well. Thanks for sharing your video.
How do you like the iron man? I’m up in the air between that and dobinsons new lift.
Very happy so far.
I am going to do this canyon this coming weekend. The WJ is down for repairs but I got new offroad tires on my 2004 Ranger so I'll give it the acid test. Thanks for the preview video.
Are you running chloride or the last canyon I featured?
@@Whitedogoverland Just Chloride. We spend time in T or C and we always try to get to Hatch to go to Sparky's.
Great video! I live in Tucson too and do much of the same! I think weve crossed paths down in Gardner but that was before i knew about the channel. Anyhow, the historic content is super cool! Rich
❤ your content brotha💪
Appreciate it 👊🏼
Spot on son. Great job as always. Love NM. Get some covers on those front seats. Love ya...
Thanks pop love ya
Thank you for sharing, my husband said he gathered some useful information. (our 4-year-old😀 daughter is still in love with the "big white dog.")
Glad I could be of some use and the dog to entertain your kiddo!
Great video loved it. I know parts of Mexico are very beautiful with lots of waterfalls. Glad you like the Toyota Rav 4 was very interested to know how that would perform.
Thank you good sir!
Nice area
"Soft Roading" new term to me! - that's a great way to describe how I roll most of the time!
It was interestring to see how the Rav4 rolls with the Big Dogs - (irregarless of their color-:)
It tore it up, and kept up no problem for the soft road type. Not every trail needs a big kitted 4x4, this one was an exception!
Congrats on the brokerage (my wife is a sahm and realtor) and new Rav! Very capable softroader. I want to say the off road modes would work similarly to Atrak in your tundra using the abs to help send power to the wheels with traction. Enjoy the new ride and hope the brokerage is successful! God bless!
Love the new RAV4. Sad that you are selling the other RAV, but this new one rocks. Congrats!!!
I am a bit sad about it too, but time for change. Thank you!
Good video, looks like a great trip! I can't say that I'm a fan of the Rav for this type of duty, but it looked like it did well! Sending a couple bucks for the Tundra fund 👍
Shoot I appreciate that a lot, tundra does as well!
Hey man, I live in Albuquerque! ;) lol, and you're spot on. Not without it's problems, but I love my job and the beauty this state has to offer within just a few hours of driving. It's fun to see your appreciation for NM, and your videos that showcase it's scenery. Nice RAV, and look forward to seeing the Rock Warrior again once it heals up. Keep up the great content, appreciate you man!
Nothing wrong with your city at all, I personally enjoy it and reminds me a lot of my home town. It’s just how people dictate the rest of the state which is a hard misrepresentation. Appreciate your support. The Tundra should be out here soon.
@@Whitedogoverland Thanks for the response! There's actually a lot of things wrong with Alb, but I won't say much. Even if people have negative connotations for just driving thru on I40 (I can relate). Thanks for posting about Chloride Canyon, and you're narration of the history. I'm hoping to take the same trek, and hopefully you all cleared out most of the road blocks. ;) J
@@jmathre44 it was definitely all smooth up until the last sections, the actual trail is completely blocked but we cleared another route through. Probably more trees will come down with the rains!
Sweet new Rav. I have a 2019 le awd so I have the brake based terrain control. Put accessory TRD springs on it which gives the le about 1.5 inches in the back and 1.25 in the front. Going to put a Rival under engine skid pate on and eventually an Ironman 4x4 lift. I still need to make it somewhere to test its limits but so far its been great. No low range sucks but out my way I never really need it.
Even without the low range it almost performs the same, I’m a big fan. Check out dobinsons new lift for these cars you can’t beat their quality!
Congratulations on your new car... I had to take a second look to make sure I was in the right channel... LOL. Now... How about clearance? I did not notice any issues... towards the end when you were driving through the river looked super cool. Enjoy!!!!
Same channel, different rig this time! Thanks for the support!
Hallo. Greetings from Germany, i like your staff!
Thank you!
Thanks for the Re-Badge comment. my first thought when the video started,,,, Good to see a real road review also. 93% of the road we run, that would be great. Doubt she would have winched those trees out of the way. Nods to your friends. and nice rig. shoulda seen the Hewitt Canyon area in '71 and where Uncle Sammy took a LUV truck. little rigs rule. Gorgeous Country. comments and scenery are great.
Thanks as always good sir. Glad you enjoyed seems like my videos can help you reminisce on the past!
Outstanding!! We have the 2023 XLE Premium (red also). Been wondering how it would do. THANKS!!
They are capable cars!
You getting really buff.
Yolanda the mountain / fire tower dog!
Thanks I needed my WDO fix! I was impressed by the RAV4. I also noticed the Crooked Tooth brewery sticker on your fridge I never knew they were there I will check it out next paycheck😃 I work downtown, how much is the old rav4 going for? Also congrats and good luck in the new career is it sales ?
Thanks brother! Actually opening a real estate brokerage here in town if you need any services down the road!
Congrats on the new job and the Rav. Where can I find your routes? You on pateron yet?
I am on patreon now! Have some routes available if you want to join I appreciate it!
This is great!!! Where is the entrance to that last place you called little creek? South of Glenwood?
I can’t share that publicly on here swore to a buddy not to tell but I do have routes over on my patreon!
What bro?! What???!!! Congrats on the new car. Bought a new Toyota Corolla once. Loved that car.
What’s the new occupation? Unless you don’t want to say, that’s cool.
Off topic but I’m curious if you ever put lockers in the Tundra?
Thanks man! Currently opening my own real estate brokerage. I have planned to do an e locker in the rear of the the tundra but haven’t really been pushed to do one yet
This looks like a really fun trip. I'd love to plan on making it out there in the next year. Do you have a .gpx of your route?
I don’t have gpx files but I do share routes over on my patreon!
Do you post your trail maps anywhere? I am a recent subscriber to OnX Offroad because of your excellent narration and the videos you have produced. It would be awesome to have access to your trail maps, even at a price!
I do yes they can be found on my patreon! Appreciate your support!
Is this straight up Chloride creek rd? Or is this a separate trail out of the town of chloride. Awesome video
It’s chloride canyon these days. Not much of any technical left
Wait a sec... Is this a new Rav4? What happened to the other one? If my count is correct, this is your third Toyota. Someone is a fan. 😉
It is… I still have the other one. It’s now my 9th Toyota I’ve ever owned! Not including the wife’s lol
Dats an easy drive there, but I rather take my 97/2006 Tacoma!!!
But as long as you are outside having fun dats all it counts.
Those new Tacomas are way too expensive compared to what my previous ones cost back den, anyway have fun be safe.
Yeah definitely! Can’t beat earl tacos
When did you actually do this trip? I was planning on doing it in a couple weeks (late may) by myself. Hoping you guys got all the fallen trees off of the road for me!
Just got back last Sunday, if you do the full route, the actual road is blocked once you get north of bursum road, you’ll have to take a spur trail but it will link up with the actual trail around 4 miles north. We got it all cleared out now
@@Whitedogoverland thanks! I was happy to see you did it in a RAV4. My stock 94 Pathfinder should be ok.
@HEAVY_B definitely no issues I could foresee!
What maps did you use? Do you have a recorded track you could post?
They can be found on my patreon page!
The guy with the bad@$$ Blazer, does he have any socials?
Cool to see you in the new ride that most people can sympathize with.
He sure does he’s on Instagram, broverland_k5
What tires are you using ?
They’re falken ats, I think 245/60/16?
Is it the AWD
Yep!
No more Tundra?
Tundra is still around, just needs some serious work
A Subaru with a different badge 😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂. Wow never been more bored and anoyed , your welcome
Remember that picking up dog waste is crucial everywhere. State and federal laws require dog owners to clean up after their pets. Dog waste contains excess nutrients and can spread diseases to wildlife and contaminate water. Be a responsible pet owner and help protect our natural spaces! 🌿🐾
😂I think you’d probably be a little better off with a Subaru outback or forester? They handle that a little better!!!
RAV 4?? Tell me you didn't get rid of your truck.
I still have the tundra, just locked in the stables at the moment
