    I’ve owned my Car-15 since 1982. Truly love that little rifle

    Both the carbine length and 20” rifle are so fun to shoot, the pencil barrel makes them feel extremely light. 👍🏼

      Just curious as I only know of the Gov profile barrels, is there a significant weight difference between pencil and gov profile barrels on both carbine and full length, enough to feel the difference?. Thanks.

      @@thesanfordmethod1905Absolutely, very noticeable. Empty weights:
      Colt SP-1 Carbine: 5.8lbs
      Colt SP-1 Rifle: 6.4lbs
      M4/M4A1 circa 1994-2004 with govt profile barrel and carry handle: 6.8lbs
      M16A2: 7.5lbs
      Going from M16A1 to M16A2 was noticeable in a bad way.
      Going from M16A2 to M4 was noticeable in a good way.
      Going from a basic M4 with no accessories to an M4 MWS with KAC rails and Aimpoint wasn't really much different, because the carry handle was removed and replaced with BUIS , Aimpoint mount, and Aimpoint.
      The weight difference between the fat handguards and KAC RAS wasn't that different.
      What really changed was when you added the IR LAM and Surefire, mainly because of batteries.
      SOCOM barrel made it more piggish, unnecessarily.

      Awesome! Thank you for this valuable info. I believe I'm going to do a build M16A1-ish instead of buying a Colt AR15A4 . Any more opinions on the Colt M4 Carbine - 16" barrel version ?. Thanks again! :D @@LRRPFco52

    You can get a letter from Colt manufacturing that confirms the year and history of the rifle. The cost was $25 a decade ago.

    Just had to re-watch this….too cool. I think the experts like Ian or Chris from S.A.S. would tell you that Colt only had one assembly line, meaning the same barrel went on both a military gun and civilian gun, so pretty sure 5.56 was no problem.

    • @Gostwriterindisguise
      @Gostwriterindisguise Před 11 měsíci +1

      Except for this with its 16" instead of 14.5" barrel.

      @@GostwriterindisguiseYes, I remember Chris at SAS mentioning for the civilian builds, all they did was bring over the barrels and semi-auto trigger groups, and replace them.

    It’s the smartest thing you could have done. Other than an actual M16A1, there is no lighter, handier, better AR15 you can buy. I have both and the CAR15 is my “go to” gun….by now, you realized this on your own. An M4 is heavy and clunky compared to an AR15A1. It’s cool factor and eminent practicality is in its simplicity. I live in an arctic climate, and it functions reliably in all weather conditions. They are very well made too! As Chris Bartocci would remind you, its all almost genuine “mil spec” ….it will just increase in value. Note the 6 hole handguard…as a collectors item now, resist the urge to modify it in any way.

  • @drewalexandervideography

    Nice rifle! There’s definitely a cool vibe with the retro style rifles these days.
    I built a clone of a Gary Gordon / Colt 723 using assorted parts: H&R lower, Brownells C7 upper, Bushmaster HBAR 1/9 twist barrel etc…I too had to crank my rear peep sight very far to the right to get it zeroed as well. One of the guys at my FFL said that sometimes it was like that with those older rifles and that there was nothing wrong with them.

    Good stuff, beautiful rifle. I'm building one of these now through psa, I'm using the Harrington and Richardson stamped lower with one of their a1 uppers. Its gonna be a pencil barrel 14.7 pin and weld. I'd love to get an OG colt but it's just out of reach for me, but I love the history of h&r and I grew up with alot of weapons made by them so they hold a special place in my heart so this build is a win win for me.

    Colt SP1 1979 owners manual I have says the rifle and carbine can shoot either 223 or 5.56 mm. Leave it original forget about the light and the scope puts your cheek hold too far above the aluminum stock. Shoot Irons and keep it original and light as it was designed to be, you'll enjoy it more. Blessings.

    I have an original Colt SP 1 but it does have a forward assist. Bought it in the 1980's used. It is also chambered .223 but it has the long shrouded flash suppressor. Wanted to sell it but no one bought it on consignment so I have kept it. It has been a closet queen.

    I have the same gun, Regarding the windage if you look from the back with the gun cracked open its thicker on one side than the other. Its a manufacturing flaw. on more than mine clearly. It sets the rear sight hard to the right side. Closed it has more meat on one side than the other. Unfortunate but still cool.

    I think it might be less wear on the gun if you shot 55gr .223 rem and not a steady diet of say M193. But if you are planning on using this for self defense id get M193 & or 55gr Hornady 55gr V-Max rounds loaded for it; regular hollo points might not feed right since it pre M4 feed ramps. Maybe put a front sight or barrel clamp light mount so you can have some illumination. Besides that nice firearm.

    Nice Rifle! I’ve built a couple to approximate the originals, but there’s no substitute for the REAL original. I have my eyes on an early-70’s SP1 20” that’s been stored most of its life. They are asking $2,200.

    • @tylertapp131
      @tylertapp131 Před rokem +2

      That's actually not that bad. I've seen some of the new made colts goin for 2500 and up in my area. To get an original from the 70s for 2200, if you have the funds I would jump on that. That's basically a collector's piece at this point.
