My goodness I felt like I was back in front of our black and white TV. Sitting on the floor! A 14 year old mesmerized by these early Elvis performances.
The camera loved Elvis as much as we do that beautiful face looking straight at you oh the amount of screaming in people's homes all across America, another thing to love him for he never took himself too seriously,he had it all looks, talent,humility and love for his fans all through his career god bless his beautiful soul the joy on your face Nick while watching says it all

Fun fact: The vest he is wearing is shimmery gold, his girlfriend at the time gave it to him as a gift. She picked out the material and pattern and took it to her friends mom to sew it for her. They were happily surprised when they saw him wearing it on TV. I never tire of seeing these back-in-the-day appearances.

I remember seeing these shows when I was a kid and every time since still gives me a thrill. A talented, gorgeous, humble man that I've loved all my life. My parents saw him live in Austin in 1956 and we all saw him in Austin in March 1977. He's unforgettable.
He was horn with the talent, swagger and looks. The whole package. Best ever there was
I remember when he came on the scene. No one had seen anything like him before. He changed everything. He was so humble and his voice was so beautiful. He was so engaging and Elvis really did love his fans. I do feel sad when I think of all the people who surrounded him and many who used him. He should have been able to get the help he needed. Miss Elvis always. 💔
He was an absolute natural. TV was the new medium at that time but he instinctively knew how to interact with the camera and audience. As you say, the second performance is more assured, but all the hallmark Elvis traits are already there, even in the first clip. I don't think he ever understood why we all screamed at any twitch or movement, but he was still doing it in the Aloha concert and getting a kick out of the audience's reaction so many years later. Don't be Cruel is a favourite and I've always loved the little vocal hiccups and runs he puts in. No-one like him then or since ❤
Suzi Quatro was on a programme a few years and said she watched the 1956 performance on tv and when Elvis did that ‘eye thing’ she was immediately drawn to him even though she was only six.
I was only 3 when I heard him on the radio in 1960!! Never even knew what he looked like til I saw him in a film when I was 9 and just wished I was one of those children acting with him👌💕🕺

Thanks for this great reaction; as usual, you have profound comments. The first performance was, of course, before they decided to film him from the waist up and the second one was after. He had that unmistakable Elvis charm and charisma in both. So fun to revisit these classic performances.❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing these tv performances. He was so cute. I was wondering why someone didn't show these great performances that were world changing. I never knew this until about 4 years ago someone said how they loved Elvis and i started investigating what Elvis was all about. BLEW MY MIND! What this man did and how giving he was. Ended up going to Graceland and was so wonderful. You are so wonderful showing these shows. Thank you.❤

I don't comment often - I wanted to say in Elvis' ( 45 min ) 1972 Interview with EOT - He was talking about when he was young performing He said "I look like I am having an Epileptic Fit ~~ And starting laughing!!!! That boy was a unique and dangerous combination of innocence, politeness, humbleness, religiousness, shiness, playfulness, self-confidence, boldness, wildness, talent, beauty, and incomparable sex appeal. It`s no wonder parents and older people had no idea where to place him. Of course, they were afraid for their innocent daughters. How could they have known that, in the beginning, Elvis was a quite innocent guy?!
Nowadays, people just can`t understand why these girls (and later on women) were screaming their lungs out when Elvis appeared on stage.
It`s important to keep in mind that in the 50s, most teenagers had no TV and not even a record player at home. Most of them knew music only from the radio.
To see a big star in person would blow away an adult`s mind.
Of course, the teenagers flipped out. It was too much happiness to hold inside such young frames :)

Quite a contrast in performances. In ‘56 he had the guitar, wearing a fairly conservative suit, and only mildly plays to the audience. In the Jan, 1957 performance, he is much more confident, and really plays to the audience.I’ve seen/heard that the sparkly vest he wore was hand made by a girlfriend of his. Thank you for sharing!

Please play How great Thou Art live in 1972 and then 8 weeks before he died in June 1977. Elvis loved gospel music, this was his favourite genre. There are vids of both concerts live. Thank you.

Classic song & it was a favourite of both Elvis & his mother Gladys. Elvis continued to sing this throughout his career albeit as part of a medley in later years. The version he did in the 68 Comeback Special is my all time favourite though. Nick, this was great, I loved what you did to compare these two performances just 3 months apart, makes it so interesting! 🌟🌟

For his 1957 performance he borrowed some items from Jackie Wilson. Elvis saw Jackie in Las Vegas and was blown away. He basically said that Jackie did the song much better than he did on his record. Elvis reveals all this in The Million Dollar Quartet session.
In a movie he's lip-syncing the song Return To Sender using some Jackie moves. Jackie is off-camera and Elvis is getting a kick out of it.eEvis started to pay Jackie's hospital biills when he fell into a coma in 1975. Jackie had valued a picture of himself and Elvis, and of course their friendship.
I think I’ve watched that movie scene here and people made mention of Jackie being the there that I’d completely missed the first time around.

I remember seeing these on TV. I was young but remember. I never saw a show that only showed the proformer from the waist up before. 😂😂 And can't remember ever seeing another one except for Elvis.

INTERESTING STORY ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE: (Did you catch him say "Mr. Laughton") On September 9, 1956, neither Elvis nor Ed Sullivan were in the studios that day for the broadcast. A month before Elvis' appearance on his show, Sullivan suffered from an almost fatal automobile crash that left him hospitalized for weeks and was unable to recover from his injuries quick enough. British actor Charles Laughton filled in for Sullivan and served as host for Presley’s debut performance. Elvis himself was not in New York City where the Sullivan show was broadcast from but was actually at Television City in Hollywood where he was in the middle of filming "Love Me Tender." And it was Laughton who introduced Elvis that night. Goes to show you never know what goes on behind the scenes. Thanks for another good start to Sunday.

I just can't watch Elvis without smiling like a fool throughout the whole performance lol. It's funny, because many have stated and we saw ourselves when he was being filmed that Elvis was nervous before he went on stage his whole career. I find that amazing, but once on the stage it went away he was at home. I do believe you are right though, in such a short period of time he did seem to be more confident, playing with how he sang the song and remaining humble as he did throughout his entire life. You mentioned him not knowing what it would be like for him in 20 years. It's good he didn't know, sadly he was nearing his death as you know. The world lost a precious gift when Elvis passed on. He did leave behind so much music for us to listen to and to love. Thank you for another great reaction!

I don't know if you know this or not but Ed Sullivan did not want him on the show but Elvis got so big he had to have him on the show he also called Elvis a cuss word he called him a son of a you know what buddy ended up having Elvis on his show three times you take your Nick and God bless
Right. The way I know the story is Ed refused and then Milton Berle had him on his show and well the rest is history. Good for you Milton Berle. I'm paraphrasing, so don't quote me on any of this. He said he got a lot of hate fan mail after that bc he had him on his show and that's when he knew how big Elvis was going to be. He called Tom Parker and told him he had a star.
Just to let you know i now have you & Elvis on my large 17 inch screen anytime i want. I'm videotaping the episodes & saving them in a folder so all i have to do is click on the video & there you guys are -- & so close! That early morning sunrise from the Blue Suede Shoes compilation looks amazing on the big screen.

Most people think Elvis was on Ed Sullivan first but that isn't correct - Sullivan turned him down at first because of his movements and in Jan. '56 he went on The Dorsey Bros. Stage Show singing a great "Shake Rattle & Roll" youtu.be/oXiX3c|03DE&t=4 filmed head to toe. Then it was on to the W.W.Il aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Hancock w-Milton Berle in April '56 & again on Berle's show in June '56. Both appearances showed Elvis head to toe. In July '56 he appeared on Steve Allen's show wearing a tuxedo & singing "Hound Dog" to a live hound dog, which irritated Elvis greatly but he always did what was expected of him & was nice about it. According to some information, Allen wasn't fond of the way Elvis performed & he disliked rock & roll, but Elvis brought in those ratings.
Regarding Berle & Sullivan: Berle received approx. 500,000 PAN letters because all of Elvis had been shown. And although the mail was negative, it caused Berle's ratings to top Sullivan for the 1st time, irritating Sullivan greatly which caused Sullivan to rethink his original decision of turning Elvis down, & so Sullivan then agreed to have Elvis make some appearances.
Let me say that on the 2nd one Elvis is under heavy pressure to tame it down. If you notice he was only filmed from the waist up and the troubled look at times is due because of what he was going through at that time.
His girlfriend Anita made the vest for him.. i think. Waist up only thing was crazy.. unlike his concerts hes very controlled here but still 🔥
