Is the thermostat really bad? | Understanding HVAC Electrical Concepts

- In this video we will be looking at some basic checks to determine if the thermostat is really bad and if replacing it really necessary. I would swear that this is the most blamed component in the typical system and in my experience the most misdiagnosed. Sorry for the rant in the first couple minutes!
No matter how it looks or how fancy it seems, I think of it as nothing but a bunch of switches. I also think that if you can get that in your head that you can better understand how to troubleshoot it.
For those who haven't gotten their style of troubleshooting, and I guess in some ways their confidence in diagnosing, let me just say this...

Mr john, thank you very much for taking your time to share your knowledge and teach us different ways to diagnose problems that arise with our air conditioner I have learned a lot and I like your technique to solve electrical problems
Thanks. Hopefully I can get to some other electrical stuff soon. Too much stuff out there to cover!
Mr. John i thank you much, for this video. Maannnn??? After watching ur video and the way that you explain it... IT IS THE BEST, that I have ever seen. And now, you have unclogged my brains, to understand how the meter works in the field, when using live voltage. I hope i will be able to take my understanding to the next level, and be able to trouble shoot much better. Thanks to you. God bless you Sir.
A great video on troubleshooting a thermostat. You outlined some great tips. I am glad I found your CZcams channel. I look forward to watching the rest of them, especially since the electrical aspects of HVAC tend to be the hardest to grasp. Keep up the good work!
I've watched a lot of different CZcams hvac channels and yours is by far the best. I appreciate the way you explain how things work and the way you break it down, so thank you for all your wisdom!
Appreciate it. Just my 2 cents worth on some of this stuff and most people would try to give me change!
You make wiring learning so interesting. Thank you. Subscribed!
Thanks. Electricity and circuits are most definitely interesting (and confusing too sometimes!)
Great 👍🏻 video like always thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing your knowledge and skills always looking forward to your videos keep them coming
Awesome. Thanks.
Thanks you very much for your help and your knowledge
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Awesome video.
Thanks Bigg Dogg. Soon I am gonna get in touch with you!
Another great video John. If you ever get a chance, would you please make one on how to replace an ECM blower motor with a PSC? I know there are many videos out there on how to do it but I know you would explain it in detail. Thanks!
Thank you sir. I appreciate it. I did one probably 6 months ago with an X13 to PSC motor. Should be pretty much the same as a variable speed motor replacement. I think the link is czcams.com/video/bfcgp4shfTw/video.html. Let me know what you think.
Hello Ac service tech really have good vídeos on those repairs
Yes he does. There are quite a few out there that have excellent videos.
@@johnjennings487 Mr. John I think I should not have mentioned another site on your page, sorry if I offended you ,I really like your teaching Style hace a good day

Thx Mr. John. I'm a new subscriber, also I'm a new HVAC tech. I liked the idea of the wires to the thermostat R and C , I use the alligator clips. Could you please do a video about wiring the circuit board and the float switches . I know you have one, but new one with different method will be much helpful. Thank you.
Welcome to the trade. Lots to learn. I will try to do another one on the circuit board/float switches. You got anything particular you are hoping for?
Thanks
Thank you.
@John, I have ecobee thermostat, display room increases when I call for cooling. It started doing that after I changed capacitor in the condenser unit.
Ecobee Thermostat getting hot, why?
Like it is in heating and going up? Or just hangs around the room temp and might register 1 degree higher?
Had a co-worker this past winter that had a thermostat go straight to 90 randomly during the day. Just started happening all the sudden but he noticed a sauna when he and his wife would come home from work 🤣. She swore she didn't do it so he changed out the Honeywell thermostat.
Can u also check continuity between pins to tell if there is a short on the thermostat face?
I would say so, I have done that on some that were able to take batteries. Just power it up, put it in whatever mode you want, then turn it over and check continuity.
I learned about bypassing the thermostat very early in my career, you can easily determine if it's bad by jumping it out
Yes. It is just a switch.
jumping it out.... what does that mean, can u all explain what, is jump???? and how it is performed??? Maaannnnn why dont ppl explain things, when they say things... not every one has the understanding...bypassing the thermostat, what does that mean... can u all explain how it done...Maaannn.... why dont ppl explain things when they say it... Maaannnn. thnx, still.
Sorry, had a couple sick days. Here is a simple way to "jump" or bypass. If you go to the sub base of a thermostat and look at the wiring you will notice a bunch of terminals and different colored wires. The thermostat is nothing but a bunch of different switches and depending on what is supposed to happen, they close. If you suspected that the thermostat wasn't sending power to the i door fan relay you could jump out the R and G terminals/wiring. Use an alligator clip wire and connect one end to R and the other to G. This would bypass the switch itself and send power straight to the G circuit. Or you could remove the red and green wires from the thermostat terminals and put them together in a wire nut. By jumping it out or bypassing it, you essentially take the switch out of the picture and straight power it. Hope that helps a little.
Fan and Compressor were not kicking in. Replace Capacitor, Contactor, Control Board and still did not start. Replaced Low pressure switch and Air Condition (Fan and Compressor) start working.
Great. Just make sure that the pressure switch is actually bad. It could just be doing it's job of protecting the unit. The issue could potentially be in the refrigerant circuit.
So John on a American Standard HP if connect the Red & White wires to test my Emg heat will the fan run too or do i also need to connect Green ?
A lot of manufacturers will run a fan circuit off of the heat relay/sequencer but maybe not all and since but I would say connect the green also...just so you know the blower should be on. I believe that it would probably not be necessary but just in case?!

I was thinking the same thing, be on the safe side. Thank you so much for the Info.I'm in a different field than yourself but we have the same problem, some guys don't even have a Multimeter, They just want to throw parts at the issue.
I have a blower motor that starts and stops a few times then starts and runs fine, any ideas
Do you know what type of motor it is or have an air handler model number?
I need help Trouble shooing packaged heat pumps…. 🤷🏻♂️
Versus regular split heat pumps or is it just something about packaged units?
