- I grew up on this super retro 90s anime aesthetic, and today I’m taking a careful look at how to draw in that style by looking at the fantastic HanavBara.
Check out HanavBara. They’re awesome:

regarding that subtitle thing; PSA: older anime used to have black and yellow subtitles, not white and black ones.
Absolutely! I forgot to mention the colour :)
Do you have evidence that black and yellow subtitles takes back in the 80s-90s ? I remember watching some anime in the early 2010s and there were still black yellow subtitles. I don't remember seeing old anime with black and yellow subtitles because a lot of them already had English dub on it. All I can say is that most of them are illegally translated which is known as 'fan translation' that has been going on for long now and the subtitles may be released late.
One thing i see very few people mention:
When going for an anime screenshot vibe rather than a manga cover vibe, keep your line weight variation to a minimum within each stroke. High variation in line weight was expensive and produced less consistent lines in film cel animation, so it was generally avoided.
Ive always been drawn to 90's anime asthetic, its what i always envision when i think of the word anime. Its iconic.
At least ive got something to watch while im waiting for the tow truck to pick me and my clunker up.
I kind of grew up on it, so very nostalgic to me :) hope you got your car sorted out!
nothing comes close to 80s and 90s anime
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I wanted to make 90s style anime art so badly, but making it look old seemed like a total mystery to me! I managed to do it thanks to your guide, it was extremely helpful
This is pretty much the art style I want my manga Girl Detective Natsuko to have.
It's set in 1989.
did you start it tho
@@JoJoboiWav I'm waiting until my drawing skills get good enough.
Why not try writing it like a novel. Unless you're good at writing. For my opinion its best to write it than to wait for you to draw better. Afterall, some mangas were adopted from light novels for example.
Don't wait. did you know the mangaka for One Punch Man started with very little knowledge? The art improved as they continued working on it. If you wait, nothing will ever happen.
The art style of the GlitchTale animation series on CZcams started very simple and has come so far since then, and she exploded with popularity from the first one.
Just start. Don't wait. Progress comes with practice. Progress will not strike suddenly one day. You literally just need to do it today. @@GarrisonMorton
When i was a child i was really obsessed with sailor moon anime (i watch it in CD). I mostly draw sailor moon all the time when i was a kid. The style was pretty cool!
It's funny, I grew up with 90s anime... so I'm over here trying to learn "normal" anime art... but I am in love with this artist you're showcasing. 90s anime is "anime" to me and all of this new stuff is a learning curve. I grew up drawing 90s Sailor Moon when I was 11. My art is based off of SM and has a veerrry 90s feel to it. Thank you for laying out how to color it all finally! And on your SM sketch - make those eyes bigger ;)
This video was very helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to make something like this!
David Liu also does this style really well
id love to see you do a video on the spiderverse art style!
Maybe soon!
I want to replicate 90's anime backgrounds but it's very difficult for me, and i've been studying the style a lot, and looking for references, please someone give me some advice, or a tutorial, please
Wonderful video as always Aaran, you did an amazing job...
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@aarantheartist I love your art and works Aaran, I hope we can do another hang out
Im on holiday from work in 2 weeks time, so we’ll do more then :)
@@aarantheartist I would love it 💖
I am just starting art, and I absolutely love this retro artstyle. Especially HanavBara style. are you up to doing a beginner tutorial of this artstyle? It would be a great learning experience.
What kind of thing would you want me to talk about, and I’ll see what I can do :)
@@aarantheartist sorry for the late response! I was so excited when I saw you replied. Probably more on retro art styles and step-by-step tutorials on this particular art style. Looking forward!
Hanaberva art style is slaior moon art style.
how did you make the stars
Please, where I can find these arts (the examples)?
What art program are you using? I’ve never seen one that straight up has a setting for chromatic aberration!
Looks like Procreate to me :)
@@coconutdreams1238 thank you!
what were the pencils used for 90s anime?I'm trying to color and make it look 90s any specific pencils or markers used for physical art to get this look?
I don't know what I'm talking about, but I did hear in passing this morning that some of them used copic markers before the switch to digital.
can't people just look at the images and get that same information?
I mean, yeah. But if it were that easy, you would never need anybody to teach you anything.
