Down the Rabbit Hole || Exploring Rarotonga, Cook Islands

  • Today we’re climbing one of the tallest mountains on the island for an epic view and we get sucked down the rabbit hole on the legendary Mt. Raemaru.
    Join our Sailing Crew: bit.ly/join-gwtw
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Seriously, the people we’ve met on Rarotonga have been amazing. One day I ran out of cash at a cafe and the lady behind the counter loaned me her scooter to go to the ATM. That would never happen in the USA.
    Then we met Dion & Marcelle. They made it their personal mission to make sure we had a killer time on their island. After a full tour of Raro, Marcelle took us to her favorite cafe for coffee and brunch then she gave us her car!!! Yea. Crazy right?!?
    First big adventure she told us to: Hike the legendary Raemaru trek up the mountain. The most famous mountain in all of the Cook Islands.
    It’s the first real trail we’ve seen since Mt. Quilotoa in Ecuador (watch it here: www.gonewithth..., and it’s definitely the most interactive trail we’ve ever hiked. From the QR code signs, to the hunt for red passion fruit and guava, and the rope assisted vertical ascent to the top…this hike is LEGIT! Beautiful weather, stunning scenery and some
    📷 If you’re wondering how we got those crazy vids from the top of the mountain, make sure you check out our top camera gear on our website. If we hiked with a proper tripod, or if it wasn’t so windy, the footage would have been super stable…we just didn’t prepare for that much wind at the top.
    Oh, and that bash between my camera and the tree…it’s not the first time that poor Sony has been beaten up on a hike. I can’t believe that thing still works. 🎥
    Check out all our cameras used in this video on the blog post: www.gonewithth...

    I came home this evening after a particularly difficult shift, poured a “sundowner” and adventures with my favorite sailing couple, the mighty Wynn’s. You two have no idea the restorative and recuperative power your videos provide me. Saying “thank you” is not enough. Just know that I can face another day because I can leave it all behind when I watch you explore. 👍😉🥰⛵️

I lived there for several years and loved hiking in the foothills and mountains. The Cook Islands look amazing. What an awesome way to see the world. Fair winds and safe travels to you and yours. We were their twice over 20 years ago. People in the Cook Islands are so friendly. The island law is that you can’t sell your land. But you can give it to your children. So there weren’t any chain hotels or resorts. Just locally owned places to stay. Neighbors share their crops and catch so they don’t even know what welfare is. At low tide in the morning you found ladies in the shallows picking up sea slugs and piercing them with a knife, squeezing them and catching what looked like angel hair pasta in their bucket to eat. They put the sea slug back to “Milk” another day. The reef around the island is beautiful. 25 meters outside the breakers your in 15 meters of water. 100 meters out your in 30 meters of water. 125 meters out your in over 500 meters of deep ocean water. Really an underwater cliff. And Sooo clear visibility. Hope you get to dive. Really enjoy and have fun. You two are great adventurers.

    English is our second language. Most oldies still speak the lingo and they understand English but might reply to you in Cook Island Maori. The Needle is that rock sticking out above the trees across from you guys. I did that hike when I was in primary school. We ended up in Wigmore Falls. When I was 16, I hiked to the Needle to catch up with a church group crossing the Island only to realize that it was cancelled. Back then the trail was still wild... :) Now, I am 52, I will only hike across the plains LOL

      @gonewiththewynns  Před 4 lety

      When you add in maintenance, no doubt boats are more expensive. That's because you can just add a 0 to the cost of anything that says "marine." If you're interested & haven't see it, there is a blog post covering their cruising expenses for a year in the Bahamas. You can check it out here: www.gonewiththewynns.com/cost-sail-bahamas Hope that helps!
