- Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a master of detail. He would bring out the best in others. Everybody could say anything in the Cabinet meeting. Despite 100 arguments, if he thought he was right, he would do it and vice versa. He instilled the confidence in his co-workers that he was ready to hear your honest opinion. With Pakistan, even after Kargil, he went for Agra. His belief was, when you can’t change your neighbours, you have to get along with them. We are bigger, stronger, so we should reach out to them, he believed. So he continued to try different things.

It is my view that Arun Shourie should have been in the Modi cabinet. Why he is not in the cabinet is something i find baffling. Shourie is a well read, articulate man who could be an asset to the nation. Yet Modi sidelined him because he probably feels insecure.
For the same reason, he has not included Subramanyam Swamy in the cabinet. This man has a deep knowledge of Law, Judiciary (having spent a lifetime studying Constitutional laws and fighting in courts against corruption) and could be a great asset. Modi has kept him out as he fears Swamy's independent thinking and "i don't care" attitude.
The day Modi's popularity dips in polls, he can pack his bags.
"Being well read and articulate" are some of the reasons why he is not part of current government...as according to Sir Shourie himself...Yashwant Singh and Sinha too were very 'into the details' kinda persons ..but missed the bus.
He was a very pragmatic man. He was open to debates. He never ran down his critics. He could get on board even the worse opponents to arrive at a consensus. He reached out to all communities irrespective of caste, community and religion and that won him many hearts. He will be missed by many. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Vajpayee's greatest asset was he could build a consensus on important issues. Today, important issues like Labor reforms, Police reforms etc are in limbo because of the bad blood between BJP under Modi and the opposition. MODI tries to hog all the limelight but forgets that the nation is run by consensus. Even the opposition has a role to play here.
Bajpayeeji lost infact of good work in 2004, that's because his inability to handle Gujarat in 2002. As far as development goes he will be remembered for his work in road transportation. UPA might show it's record, but idea and initial work was done by great Atalji.

Bajpaeeji achievements in a disparate and difficult coalition government is great. On the balance, his decision to go with the party vis-a-vis Modiji was probably the right one to defeat the insidious appeasement politics of the opposition parties.
Worthy successor to PVNR, aptly carried on with the economic reforms, unleashed the animal spirits in the economy. Brought out the best in the economy, stretched her legs. Lost because of Modi's genocide in 2002, for which NDA has been destroyed and BJP has been killed. Conservatism does not go with fascism and bigotry.

So after hearing this i finally understand a bit why Arun Shourie is now so anti-BJP. He even joined BJP back in the nice Mr Atal jis day, because he is a well trained and paid leftist mole. There he found a man, legendary for his decency, and found it easy to manipulate him and suggest to him the following from the leftist agenda
1. Always try to bend down to Pakistan and always keep trying for bhaichara. When they stab you in the back, forgive immediately, and offer your back for another stab.
2. Completely oppose any BJP member who refuses to compromise.
Its very revealing how Arun Shourie brags now, about how he tried to oppose Modi from the beginning, even 30-40 years back (most of us i know, heard the name Narendra Modi after the Godhra Riot incident only). He carries anger that he was paid by Soros types for decades to break Hindutva and failed. Modi has reached the top INSPITE of every conspiracy to not let him succeed. Modi is a miracle. The sheer scale of the gang opposing Modi is EPIC. I dont think anyone comes close ....maybe now Trump is facing it. But still Modi wins, because Modi was opposed by anti national indians, all of Pakistan and Muslim world, USA and Russia. I think Trump only faces opposition within the leftist Cabal in USA. In striking contrast to Vajpayee, Modi is insecure in the company of experts and tries to keep everthing close to chest. At least that is the impression i have. Vajpayee is a far greater human being than Modi can ever hope to be.

Arun shorieji you said Shri Vajpayee was not 'jealous' as if he had to confront any leader taller than him or more popular enough to be a challenge to him. There are any number of good qualities of the late PM but you chose this trait just to have a comparison with your present adversary in Modiji. Shri Modi wasn't jealous of anyone in public eye since he was elected by the party to lead as PM based on his track record of good governance. Only those seniors whom he had not chosen in his team feel jealous of him Perhaps he didn't wish to have seniors in the team under his leadership, so that he can sail in his chosen model. Arunji , Jethmalani, Sinhas etc should shed their jealousy, nor the other way. But you have a special invite in ndtv only for the merit of 'anti Modi' stance. Good luck sir.

There is no way anyone could compare the 2. They are both great leaders. Both of them have worked relentlessly for our country.
The major difference is in the upbringing. Vajpayjee grew up in a modest middle class Brahman family, modi Ji was born into a poor family. The realities both had to fave were entirely different. Modijis struggle is different from vajpayjees.
Arun shourie has his reasons for going against modi. He was just like yashwant Sinha hoping for a cabinet post which he was not offered.
Modiji can never be a vajpayee. Vajpayjee was an erudite man, highly confident in his abilities. These people(shourie and Co) would have brought the govt down in a matter of months had they been given a cabinet birth. I don't think there was any particular friendship between shourie and Mr vajpayee. Even vajpayjee preferred to keep him in the periphery of affairs.
One must also remember that it is the same people who are now praising vajpayjee who worked with all their might to bring what was one of the best govts till then down back in '04.

He started his journalistic career going after Reliance Industries in 80's, and in 2003 he went praising the company and also helping them launch Reliance Infocom.
