  • Theodore Bikel was “the singer of his people”-an actor, singer, and activist who defined iconic roles in The Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof, released dozens of albums of folk songs, and helped secure the survival of Yiddish culture for future generations. Produced by the Milken Archive of Jewish Music in cooperation with his wife, Aimee Ginsburg Bikel, this video tribute features Bikel reflecting on his life and career in an oral history session recorded in the final months of his life. Dozens of photographs from his personal archives enhance the story. Narrated by Aimee Ginsburg Bikel.

The America Israel Museum is proud to celebrate the life, art, and sound of Theo Bikel in its collection. Few performers had the power to create a cohesive image of a Jew at the crossroads of history. How appropriate that this loving and reverent tribute produced by his family and The Milken Archive of Music with the freedom of use replicates the generosity with which Meir Theodore Bikel gave all of himself to the world as a powerful voice of our people.
This voice cannot be separated from his songs that continue to sanctify every event of our people oneness. It is Theo's voice that is heard at weddings from Cleveland to Tel Aviv and it is his voice that is heard at the Bar-Bat mitzvas in Odessa and in London. Let's give it a standing ovation.
