Coming Together To Clean Sri Lanka's Beaches

- When the MV X-Press Pearl cargo ship sank off the coast of Colombo in Sri Lanka, countless plastic pellets or nurdles littered over 700 km of shoreline. Nurdles, the size of lentils, are almost the size of coarse sand, so are nearly impossible to hand-pick off the beaches.
The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) in Sri Lanka and marine conservation organisation the Pearl Protectors has been using sieving tools to clean up the debris.
But as the monsoon season threatens, all efforts to help with the cleanup are have become dire.
Enter the 'Sweepy'.
Produced by our friends at BeachTech in Germany, the machines are fit with a mesh that can sieve out tiny particles like nurdles efficiently. They can also help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by reducing the manpower needed for cleanups.

About | Alliance to End Plastic Waste -
The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (Alliance) is a global not-for-profit organisation partnering with government, environmental and economic development NGOs and communities around the world to address the challenge to end plastic waste in the environment.
Through programs and partnerships, we are focused on solutions in four core areas: infrastructure, innovation, education and engagement, and clean up.
The company’s that cause this should be made to clear this up however much it costs! Kudos to the locals for sorting it themselves! ❤❤❤
Just another piece of evidence that politics doesn't care about it's people and the land!
EXACTLY!!
I hope that the ship company and insurance are helping to pay for the cleanup? Manpower and involvement is great, but on this scale (big ) you need large machines helping. Best wishes.
Amazing people, amazing efforts, amazing international cooperation, and amazing that the Sri Lankan government got so involved.
Fantastic work you are doing. I have never seen anyone that goes this deep to clean up basically anything❤❤❤❤
Oh wow thank you for sharing this video. It's good to call attention to these things and we have to start fixing them somehow
Beach combers 2-3 times the size and probably 100x more efficient than these 3 put together can be rented for this project. Many beaches across the world have been using them.
That's great!! Looking forward to some updates about this!
A commendable work done by you and hats off.
share it with others!! more people need to see this. i want videos like this in front of every single person possible
Good Job. Really happy to see tthis
Great video! Wishing all the best to the team in Sri Lanka.
Thank you for your service👑
This is great!
this is amazing !! we need more people with Sweepy's on beaches all over the world 🌍🌎🌏
Good idea, well done 👍🙏🙂
Great work
Don’t these nurdles float, could you use flotation to separate the sand from the plastic pellets (polyethylene), just a thought.
giving hope
Awesome ! 😊
😍😍
Omnamasivaya.
As Ghandi says, you must be the change you want to see. Plastic consumption needs to be reduced overall by individuals to reduce the impact on the oceans .
Are they still cleaning there? Are there any update informations?
MEPA, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Greenpeace, and other international organizations should be looking at charging the ship owners and the country of nurdle manufacturing (China in other words) for the clean-up expenses.
Unfortunately CCP doesn't play by the rules. They give very little regard to this sort of matter.
how can i get one
Ocean hero and Ecosia
Why there are lots of plastics
👍💚🙏
0:57 May 20 boat sank off of the coast. What F-ing year? Everybody knows! I don't know. Do you?
2021
Just check the year of the video...
Well that’s a really efficient way of working. Are the chemical warfare suits really necessary for sifting plastic pellets.

What happened to this project ??
there are automated fully solar powered machine for such purposes. You should use those.

Involving people in these activities is also educative.
" no longer there " ....... REALLY ..... open your eyes and BRAIN
That's the larger pieces, the nano sized ones wouldn't cleaned up.
В начале надо людей воспитать что бы не бросали мусор а потом заниматься чисткой😊
Sad to know its a problem someone else created for them. Not their fault
Why are they all dressed up it’s plastic 😂😂😂
NO NURDLES TRANSPORTATION ON THE OCEAN .!!!!!!!!
PLEASE 😢
Sri Lankan gov is busy with stealing money but helping the country, i won't expect anything good from these clowns. Better ask the public for help.
until the manufacture of single-use plastics stops, clean-ups are a temporary band-aid. Kudos to those that do such clean-ups though.
Lol I like how you blame the manufacturers. Do you have 2-5x as much money to spend as you’re now? I bet if you really tried, you could live your life with very minimum of such plastics. But I don’t see you doing that. You think if we force the manufactures to stop, everything with the magically fixed. It won’t
Oil crisis?
No?
Глупо и не продуктивно заниматься этим вручную. Все способы, показанные на видео - это борьба с ветряными мельницами.
Why the masks ect
Covid.
@@Gertyutz OK. Why the masks? Outside? On a windy beach. It still amazes me that people were this insane.
@@jamesbizs It wasn't insane. Early in the pandemic, we didn't understand how it was spread.
You need machines to process this crap..
There are field of them as far as the eye can see.
Pointless
