I have learned more and questioned my assumptions more since finding your channel than anything I have studied about archery. Please keep sharing.

    I’ve been shooting with my first pin at 15yds for about 3yrs now. Good to 20yds with the forest pin. You’re right about shooting at elevated stands. The trajectory is definitely different and everyone should practice that way. I really want to get into the high foc arrows. Just been procrastinating.

    I’m shook. Been struggling at the 30-40 yard pin gap for over 10 years, but always assumed it was poor form caused by the steeply sloped section in my back yard range. 37 yards kicked my butt so many times that I actually have passed a couple deer until they could get out of the gap, weather that meant in to 30 or out to 40 yards. Looking back at all those shots and how one or two steps can change my trajectory so much is eye opening. I couldn’t make the EZV work for me, but this is gold.

    The 17-18 yd zero is basicly using the point blank zero from a rifle. Anywhere in that range will be in the "kill zone" all things equal

I have been gettin into situations where I seem to be getting shots at 26 & 36 yards this year. Jus lucky I guess but had I doped my pins in this manner, things my not have been astronomical in differences but In a game of inches, this would have made a difference. Ill try it

    Finally someone who does it like me. I didnt want to say anything bc I "would be wrong" even though I always had more deer on the ground than them. I do it just a tad bit different though. I go back to 25 yards and zero. Aim a heart and only 3 inches higher at 5-10 yards 1 inch higher at 15 though 20 and so on. Only 1 inch low at 30. Rarely did I shoot at 30 but my Kentucky windage had to come into play at that point. 500 grain arrow also

  • @bornepatrol
    @bornepatrol Před 4 lety +1

    I still use 20/30/40 etc but everyone I help set up and and guide into the sport I start them at 5 and walk them back so they can visualise and learn what the arrow does. Some are amazed. Some don’t believe the magic. We shoot field rounds with targets at 5y and you’re using the 30 maybe 40 pin to hit. I’m a big proponent in learning your trajectory from real close to your max hunting distance.

  • @woodsdog7849
    @woodsdog7849 Před 4 lety

    I agree and subscribe to this same idea of utilizing one pin and have used it for years on whitetails with success. I don't use a slider although some of my sights are slider sights, I adjust for the average trajectory for my setup and I know that from point blank out to about 32 yards, I can hold on to the "point of the shoulder" and be accurate, especially for stand hunting for whitetails. I'm in the rural northeast and if my stand setup is within this "zone" I just hold for point of shoulder. No guesswork and no confusing pins. I started using this setup back in the mid 1990's after reading a book from Roy Marlow entitled "Timeless Bowhunting." Great stuff. Thanks for bringing this to the forefront for others to consider and use. I love your videos as you communicate as a hunter first and foremost, not as a shooter!!! Thank you and keep up the excellent work!!!

    Used a single pin on my hunting bows forever. “The 5 second rule”. You can spend an entire season waiting, picking your nose, eating your sandwich 2 hours early. Within 5 seconds, You have to qualify, draw, aim and execute a clean shot and the last thing I want to have to do in that 5 seconds is look through a busy sight window and make my brain choose the most appropriate pin. BTW single aiming points work wonders for firearms as well.

    I had a range in my backyard back in the 90's & I did most of my shooting elevated from a 🌳 setup. The pendulum sight b4 it would break cuz they all did would slowly go up as you moved to a target closer to u. However as soon as u would shoot under 11 yards crazy stuff would happen due to the steep angle. The EZV sight is very good from shooting above whether it would be practicing or in a true hunting scenario & that thing AINT breakin.

I may range find surrounding trees ahead of time, but I would still use single fixed pin regardless of the bow being used. Live deer seldom stand in my pre-selected 20 yard spots like my 3D targets.

    I taught archery myself for the most part and two decades ago I received my first compound bow. First thing I realized shooting at targets, starlings and squirrels is that all of my successful shots were under 18 yards. Second thing was that my arrow flight from 9-21 yards contained less than a 6 inch difference. Bam boom! Set the first pin at 20 and judge the rest by feel up to the next pin which became a 27-45yard pin. Originally a 3 pin that’s now a 2 pin because one broke and what’s the point beyond 50

    Wow, I've been doing the 15 yard pin for quite a while, so it's nice to hear that the Wizard approves. I think for the past few years my average shot on a whitetail has been 11-12 yards, so why set the first pin for 20? I shot from 8 to 20 yards and really saw no appreciable difference in point of impact, so it also works great for turkey hunting. Get them close, shoot a 600+ grain arrow, with a scary sharp fixed blade broadhead (I like Magnus Black Hornet SerRazors the best), and then watch them fall!

    To my first shot with an adult arrow . I have 3 pins . I the heat of the moment. Miss just the yardage a little. Shot was a little low. My first pin has always been at 10yds. My give the first pin at 15 a try. Was happy with the adult arrow penation. Feed the coyotes last night .

    I shoot single pin slide . But I do like the idea of the 15yrd pin or in my case 15yrd setting. Had a-lot of 5 to 15yrd encounters last season. In fact i shot my buck at 18yrds.

    This is basically what we do with rifles to get the "lucky " follow up shot and know what the hold is. I wish I had this sooner!

    Good stuff as usual. I’ll have to mess around with it with my 5 pin. Still deciding if I’m going to go pins or EZV this fall.
    Those of us who don’t hunt in tree stands and hunt elk/deer out west might not get as much benefit from this sight setup.

    I was literally gonna do this very thing. I missed twice this past season at close range. Part because bambi is psychic and the other, i aimed with a 20yrd pin

    Dad and I were driving around the desert looking for deer and i thought i had everything figured out at 16yld. I always see deer far away and so all my focus was on how far can i set my pins. we drove past a coyote standing next to the road so dad backed up and he's still standing there. Its the middle of the desert so good chance were the first people he has ever seen. i jump out and knock an arrow and I had every pin drawing a line up his chest. arrow went right over his head. I believe my first pin was at 25yds, but lessen learned. i went home and made myself a 15yrd pin. sure enough a few days later i shoot a huge mule deer on the trot at 15yds. defiantly would have missed if i didn't get that opportunity to learn form that coyote.

    I shoot a single pin just switched to it last year I like it a lot. But I raise the sight up a bit and have it set to the lowest point is 15 yards. At 10 and 20 they hit right in the killzone. Good idea. I like it that way because if a deer comes in under 20 yards you don't have a lot of time to play with you sight. More good info from old ranchy

    I think this might help with my sight situation. Going with the heavier arrows (750gr) I have been running the lower end of my slider to get 40. I can get out to about 50, obviously that’s just for target, not chasing whitetail. So yeah I like the idea of starting at 15. Thanks!

    Love it!i use 5 yard increments my friends laugh but I’ve never actually shot past 40.at 40 I guess I’d just center my 35?its work for me for 30 plus years.and with a 16%foc 500 grain set up I’ve never had speed anyhow .the 125 grain buzz cuts seem too really like heart shots also😃

    Other than my recurves, I dont have a bow that doesnt hit point on from 5 to 20 yards or more, depending on the bow. I do have a 230fps crossbow which has a flat trajectory to 15 yards before drop is realized but thats it. Even my Oneida (shooting 770 grain arrow) if flat past 15 yards. I like what you are saying here, because I did the same in the 80's but none of my bows are that slow now-a-days.

    Come to think of it. Most of the deer I have seen and had shot opportunities on have been the in between 2 pins distances. Like 35, 45, 65, etc

    So in one of your videos you playfully slammed the Easton FMJ arrows. What would you suggest using? This season is my first attempt hunting with a bow and i bought arrows at a locat store not really knowing what I should do and I walked out with FMJ flapping Twizzlers. If I wanted to build an arrow to start with what would your suggestions be for materials. Goal is Mule deer and white tail in ND badlands. I'm gonna see about returning the flappers since the packaging is still nice and i haven't shot but two of them thus far.

    Shooting a 500 gr crossbow bolt sighted with scope crosshairs for 20 yards will definitely cause you to shoot several inches high at 12 to 15 yards. I learned this the hard way be aiming center on a feeding jake and cut the feathers of its back having NOT practiced at close range. Most bow/crossbow hunters practice at 20 and further, but set a tree stand at that 12 to 15 yards from a trail and wonder why they hit high. If sighted in at 15 yards, on deer, am guessing that you can basically aim center out to 25 yards and arrow drop will assist with deer drop at the longer range. This mostly applies to shooting ADULT arrows traveling at lower velocities as a result of shooting arrow setups that actually kill stuff.

    I'm trying to grasp this idea better are you closing distances between pins for yardage to have more pins possibly cover your target spot in case the yardage was misjudged on your target?
