- The recessed box I used: amzn.to/2dwUdAu
Blue "Old Work" electrical box: amzn.to/2dD0sBi
Drywall saw: amzn.to/2dP3EsJ
This takes at least 30 minutes to an hour to install. It's the Pass & Seymour Legrand brand # 785007019117 . It comes with some green brackets in case you are installing low voltage wiring, but you don't need them for flat panel tv's so just throw those away. You will also need to buy an "Old Work" outlet box. Adding a recessed outlet box behind a flat panel tv is not difficult to do.

Yup, I just picked this up at home depot installing it today. I remember you saying we needed that xtra old work box so I picked that up also. Thanks for the play by play
9:20 I felt relieved when he pressed the face plate in.
I am installing this box tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up on the screws.
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for sharing the idea.
You explained this well! I'm installing a new TV using the old mounting system requiring the mounting bracket to be moved down which will cover the existing outlet space. Thankfully there is an opening in the mounting bracket allowing it to fit over this new recessed space.
I have no idea why I watched this video lol I am not even planning on installing this box thing. Anyhow, interesting video. Did a great job explaining the steps.
Hey lefty, love the level U used. FYI they make a recessed receptacle that just wires up right into your old box. No need to replace the box at all. Think wall clock mounted flush on wall (back in the day) like in classrooms. That's what they were originally used for. Later :)
that sped up drywall knife part is awesome
For a second I thought he really did cut it that FAST lol
Was like Dame i need a battery pack one like that.. But noticed it was just a brand new knife..
great camera work.....thanks!
Damn, 3:03 Kenshin busted out the Hiten Mitsurugi style with that saw.
Nice work! Prefer to use Arlington recessed boxes which use a better mounting system than Legrand. Believe they are available at a lower price as well, anything from single to four gang boxes and are made here in the U.S.
I'm thinking of mounting my main TV on the wall and put some recessed cable boxes behind it.
I still use my 37" Vizio in the basement. Heavy as heck. Front speakers are weird to see nowadays.
I live in an area that requires thin wall conduit for all electrical wiring. How does this work with conduit? Do the instructions address the use of conduit?
how many walls in a house have access to the inside of it from behind?
Wil Morris generally no house will. in his case he had an unfinished basement or garage on the other side of the wall. meaning no dry wall. Witch is great. but depending on what room your TV is mounting, you will need to know how to fish wires. an interior wall isn't bad because there shouldn't be insulation in the wall. but an exterior wall will, and it get a bit tricky in that case. not to mention routing power from an outlet to to the TV location. could entail you to crawl through the attic or crawl space. unfortunately not every instalation is this easy and might require a licensed professional
Wil Morris None! this man was lucky (or unlucky) and had an unfinished room on the other side
Thanks this is a nice compact recessed TV outlet box - 'good job.
Maybe if you run the up closer to the box before you put it into the wall you will have less distance to tighten them.
Great video, Thanks!
Great job and video. thank you.
Please use a level
Sir what is the thing that installed on left side called ?
so the plug has to be running through the wall to to go through that opining
i would have just ordered a 90 degree angle cpu plug for the tv.. its alot simpler
That won't work if the outlet is located behind where the TV sits. The outlet has to recessed, moved or install a TV mount that can adjust out away from the wall.
i messed up and took the frame out, the anchors screwed all the way off and fell down and i cant get to them. Any tips what to do now?
was that outlet a 20 or 15?
Also to all you who are loosing sleep over the 15/20 amp outlet ( POWER doesnt PUSH it pulls) so if you had a 100 amp going to it it doesn't matter if the tv only pulls 120v 4 amp then that's all that will take place
What is the reason for the 20A outlet? I've been considering a similar install but didn't even think about needing a dedicated circuit, let alone one rated at 20A. Is this necessary? My TV is in a 15A outlet now, without issue. Thanks
AdamDIY In the future, the televisions will not be needing 20 amp circuits. The trend is towards more energy efficient and it is now in many states and counties, including here in SoCal, Los Angeles County that residential electrical will be mandated and certified energy efficient.
+Daniel Dominguez, CSS, CET - Haha, yeah it reminded me of a Simpson's skit...
"I predict that within 100 years, computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them."
tape or glue the clamps maybe
Holy s. I thought you were using a sawzall to cut the drywall!
and what if i cant get behind my wall like you could?
Nice!
I need more effort to complete the job like this...
very informitive...Before you start cutting into the wall make sure you dont cut into other wiring.
How high off the floor do you install it? Does it need to be directly behind the TV?
I first find out where I want the TV and then I try to position the new outlet as close to the TV power plug as I can without making the new outlet visible from any angle. So, hidden, but not blocked by parts of the tv itself.
Uaaa//-
while you had it apart, why not change that outlet to a duplex?
i work for dish network and i usually end up having to run new rg6 from the attic down inside the wall to replace the old rg59 crap and a lot of times they will install those stupid ass plastic boxes just for the cable to go in which i think its soooo pointless and since they screw them down to the fuckin stud the only option you have is to drill a big hole in the top so when you run your glow rods down from the attic you hopefully hit the hole and push it down inside of it. Most of the time it ends up costing you a few trips to the attic unless you have a person helping you
Clamps on “old-work” style boxes like that don’t have threads cut all the way through, and getting the screw started is when things hang up. I always spin the screw a few turns until it’s cut thread all the way through the clamp, before putting in the wall. They turn pretty easily after that. Cheers.
I would have turned the box horizontal, than it would have been level and straight with the box next to it. Other than that good vid. Its extra work to do hidden receptacles...but they look good when you are done and follow code.
do u know its a better way to do this without putting all them holes in the wall an spending all that time.
+David ford Probably not. I mean that's part of the procedure that many are doing these days.
Looks pretty rough ( the wall that is) Who did the rock and roll? AC DC next time try a little mud and a SANDER
That drywall seems extremely thin, good video though.
Nah, standard 1/2 in
Tom Servo!
Using a piece of paper vs a steel rule to mark the wall cutout.. Hmmmm
dam no ruler lmaooooo .... respect your gangsta.... job gets done without a ruler
I honestly dont see why people spend the extra money and go through the trouble to actually install an outlet behind the tv. All i did was bought a 3 prong white extention cord with 2 outlets and ran it inside the wall right behind the tv and it does the exact same thing and looks just as good. Relocating outlets is too much of a pain in the ass when the drywall is already up
Because they invented something called " the building code" to make home owners life miserable, that way you have to go hire an electritian who will do the exact same thing you would and charge you a fortune.
So basically it is ok to run and electric wire in the walls but you cant if you run the same wire as an extinsion of the same gauge lol go figure.
Wow that's fucked up lol
Just another way to make money off of people I guess
I hope they don't inspect mine because I got a extension cord for my wall hung tv
I am doing the same here, as long as you make sure no wires are exposed and everything is wired properly I say F**k the code.
no one can inspect your house unless you sell it then make sure to remove anything "not up to code" otherwise you will never be able to sell it.
certified30 Safety; if your TV shorts out, the cord will fry before your breaker can trip and could start a fire behind the wall. If you have fire damage and inspector sees that, you risk not be covered by homeowner's insurance so anty up the $$$ and do it right.
Scott Shive agreed but if the wiring is done properly, nothing wrong should happen, if people know nothing about how to get the job done, then yes absolutely, they need to get an electrician. and even at that, I have seen licensed electricians doing some real stupid stuff.
The plural of "TV" is "TVs".
This guy does not have a clue what the hell he is doing
I swear I got dumber watching this video.
