    Medicare pays partially some services inside the US. If you want to get health insurance abroad, get Plan N supplement and get reimburse with your expenses upon arrival in the US. ( it is only emergency that pays Plan N). Medicare also deduct a monthly premium ($164.90-2023) Medicare Part B. Part A has no charge. Medicare Supplement Plan N today cost $143-$150/month and it increases based on your age. In addition you get Rx coverage which is Part D Medicare.

    Almost all advantage plans have worldwide emergency coverage, but you cannot be out of the country for more than 120 days at a time. Humana being one of the harder companies to deal with but overseas they will all be difficult to deal with. Also, know that depending on the country you maybe required to pay first the entire bill and then submit it to your insurance company for a reimbursement for their share from the insurance company

    Thank you Vlogger Grandpa for your channel, I am learning a lot from you. I work for Anthem as a medical underwriter for employer groups, we do not cover anyone who lives or works overseas for more than 6 months. That is why those who plan to retire in the Philippines must make sure that their Medicare Advantage plan will still cover them should the carrier find that they are really not living in the States. Of course, they can use their relative's or friend's address as their mailing address, so the insurance carrier may never find out that they are actually living permanently outside the US. I am contemplating retiring in the Philippines 3.5 years later if the country meets all my criteria. I will not take a chance and prefer to purchase a medical plan that will cover me in the Philippines because when I get older I will not be able to to travel 24+ hours to seek medical help back in the US. I will check out the different plans offered by Pacific Cross in the Philippines. There is a CZcams video with information from Pacific Cross. The person representing this carrier mentioned that some of their plans also have worldwide coverage and those insured under these plans can also seek medical care at the medical facilities in Makati, even if they live in other provinces. I currently also have cancer, hospital indemnity and accident insurance coverage but will double check if Mutual of Omaha and AFLAC will still continue to cover me should I move out of the country. Without a good and affordable medical plan from the country I wish to retire to, I will not want to retire out of the US. I will also project the premium cost when I am in my 80s and 90s because the cost of insurance will increase as I get older. I will find out if the insurance premium will go up yearly or every 5 years and by how much.

    Not all Medicare Advantage plans are created equal. Best one's are group plans, is PPO, good in and out of network with World-wide coverage as well as in the USA, usually more costly and with higher deductibles, longer out of country acceptance . You also need cash upfront($1000-$20,000+?) and file for reimbursement later like they do in the Philippines.

    Advantage plans or Medicare Advantage plans replaces your straight Medicare part B plan. The advantage plans give you the Out of pocket limit that is not offered in your traditional straight Medicare part B plan. If using only the straight Medicare part B plan, you will have to perpetually pay the 20% co-insurance for services unless you have a supplemental insurance that will shoulder the 20% co-insurance after Medicare.

    Thanks Danny. That's a lot of information. I don't know how this figures into someone's health insurance scheme but there are credit cards available that offer travel insurances. This might save some year to year cost if they can turn on the insurance simply by buying an international plane ticket. The below statement is from a well known card issuer.
    "Emergency medical and dental benefit
    With this benefit, you can be reimbursed for up to a specified amount of medical expenses if you or your immediate family members become sick or injured while traveling. Coverage includes ambulance services, drugs, medicine and therapeutic services."

    Fyi recently about 10 weeks ago, a family got hospitalized here in Manila, she has medicare plan c with worldwide coverage n the big mistake i did was paid the hosp partial payment as i was prompted to do so. Now i have to file a claim for reimbursement myself in the US. The total bill is 6m i made partial payment of 2m, the hosp in Manila will not refund it bec it is not there policy to do so. We reported the hospitalization a bit late bec we didnt know that my family is covered. When we called (after 5 weeks) in the US,thats when we found out my family has coverage worldwide. From the time the US provider was notified, the hosp here in Manila did not ask for payment from us anymore. The medicare provider covered the 6m total bill, we didnt pay the remaining balance of 4m as the hosp will be paid by the medicare provider directly. If i know then what i know now, it has saved me the worry n trouble of borrowing money to pay cash to the hosp here. Hope this info will help.

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  Před 4 lety +1

      @Maria Guinto I'm surprised about that misfortune. However, the Philippine Hospital must reimburse you that amount since they were overpaid. They have no right to keep the money that was paid "in error." Their bill is for 6M and they got paid 8M. Go to the higher authority at the hospital or report it to the government authority who regulates hospitals. ANOTHER POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE: Medicare Advantage plans usually require you to pay the provider in advance, then file a claim with them. They really should have reimbursed you instead of sending the money to the hospital. Thus, you may also be able to claim that they reimburse you for the 2M you already paid and have them run after the hospital for the 2M you already paid. Those are my two suggestions. Let me know how you make out.

    • @mariaguinto1406

      No no the hosp total bill is 6m,by mistake i paid 2m in advance coz the hosp ask me to. That was the mistake, i shouldnt have paid in advance bec now i have to make the claim for the reimbursement myself. We are made to believe that we have to pay cash first then reimburse in the US later. I am just pointing out that no its not my case bec the hosp here in Manila can directly bill the medicare ins provider in the US. I didnt have to go through the trouble of paying cash here first should i have known my family was covered and that all we need to do is call the ins provider ryt away as soon as she got admitted. Also if you pay in advance here there policy is no refund but you can file a claim for reimbursement yourself in the US.

      I will appreciate your sharing the name of the Hospital in Manila and the name of your Medicare Part C Insurance Company so I can remember that. Is it St. Lukes or Medical City? My understanding is that: (1) hospitals in Manila will not accept medicare reimbursement and that you have to pay them directly BEFORE you file your claim in the U.S.; and (2) Medicare Plan C Insurance Company will not pay the service provider but will reimburse you AFTER you pay the hospital yourself.

      St Lukes Global in BGC. Kaiser Permanente is the ins provider.
      The process was to call the ins provider then they have an international third party office that will call the hosp in manila to give a guaranty of payment.That easy. Upon discharge St Lukes called the ins provider to confirm if they will cover the total bill, it took a couple of hours for us to wait then after the ins provider confirmed that they will cover the total bill then we are done.

      I just spent an hour talking to Kaiser Permanente. They said that you must generally call them within 24 hours of hospitalization, and they could arrange for direct payment to the Hospital in those situations where the patient does not have the money. They will attempt to reach the hospital and deal with them directly, and all you have to pay is the deductible amount. For small amounts, they will generally require you to pay first, then seek reimbursement. I can only think that maybe you neglected to tell Kaiser that you already paid 2m of the 6m. Could this be the problem?

    Social security recipients are paid regardless of where they live. Would be nice if Medicare would just pay overseas recipients a fixed amount on a regular basis just like Social security. If the cost medical services is below the fixed amount, then recipients can keep the diff. Otherwise the recipients will be responsible for the diff. No need to process claims which greatly reduces fraud and paperworks. US usually has higher medical cost than most countries. This will allow Americans to retire wherever they want to.🙂

      There's fraud in Medicare in the USA as well. I doubt that there would be serious fraud if the benefits from US expats and medical tourism was high enough. No hospital would want to kill the golden goose. Medicare could start with select hospitals/clinics with audited billing. Those wanting to go abroad for knee or hip surgery (at 1/10th the cost of US) could just state where, get a US diagnosis (obviously not faking it) and a covered post-op return exam. He first and last could be fully covered and the treatment abroad at 90% of cost. The Medicare Trust fund would save billions annually and perhaps even expand the program over time. US hospitals would have to become more price competitive or focus on essential care. Expats would not have to risk long distance travel when ill or injured which increases risk.

    It's not true, us agents get more money from advantage plans over time than a medicare supplement plan. You need to check with your advantage plan on how long you can be out of the United states. All the plans I deal with is 120 days, after that without prior approval you can be disenrolled and all claims denied whether an emergency or not.

    The selection is odd -I would think that nations with higher quality and more affordable medical tourism progams like Malaysia and Thailand would be the types to target as this would cut the costs to the Medicare Fund. Canada already has a number of exemptions that allows coverage when you are not close to the US.

    Good video Danny,the only real disadvantage to The advantage plane is once you are Eligible and decide to sign up when your 65, you have forfeited your eligibility to join a supplemental plan at a later date say for example you come down with cancer that the advantage plan doesn’t have the treatment that you would prefer and you could get with a medigap plane for example,the medigap can and will turn you down because of pre-existing conditions but if you would’ve taken the Medigap out when you were eligible at 65 they would have to take you.

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  Před 4 lety +2

      That's correct. You can actually change back to Supplemental as long as you are in good condition. However, once you are diagnose with something serious, like cancer, you will NOT be able to get back. That's because you will be subjected to underwriting. That's the reason I suggested sticking with the Supplemental Plan if you know that you have something serious medical condition.

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  Před 4 lety +4

      Any medical condition that could cost you a lot of money. High blood pressure and diabetes are something that almost everybody, at certain age, suffers from. I said, "almost everybody." I had it for the past 20 years. However, if you had prior and frequent heart attacks, cancer, lung issues, or you are now on dialysis, etc., those are "known," and "likely" major condition that would cost a lot of money right now. Then stay in the U.S. and be more secured. However, I will not worry that tomorrow I may have a heart attack, get cancer, or be on dialysis, etc. If I live on "what-ifs", I might as well not live at all. Heck, what is the sense living when one is always in fear? So, my philosophy is to have a decent assurance that I will enjoy myself and be prepared for unforeseen or unexpected incidents. If in spite of that I die, well so be it. That is God’s given destiny. 😀😀😀

    • @bobc2008
      @bobc2008 Před 4 lety

      Actually that is not correct, you have 1 year to try an advantage plan, if you do not like it for any reason you can be guarantee issue in a medicare supplement. This is a 1st time in a medicare advantage plan only. Other than. That you will have to answer health questions. There may be a couple companies that offer a guaranteed issue med sup but expect to pay about 3xs more a month than their underwritten plans.

    Thank you for the very informative video - Medicare Advantage world coverage seems ideal for emergencies, but could be very costly in terms of having a large cash reserve and also costly to fly back to the US to get reimbursement. Watched the video twice and i have a couple of questions for now: 1) is it possible to switch plans from the Medicare Supplemental to the Advantage Plans in mid year or do we have to wait until the new enrollment period each year? 2) If i am planning to spend 6-9 months in the Philippines each year, what would be the cheapest Medicare options and also what medical insurance are available for foreigners in the Philippines?

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  Před 2 lety +1

      (1) I can't remember this but I believe you have to wait for the enrollment period to make a change unless you change residence. (2) Advantage will be better if you spend a lot of time in the Philippines or any country for that matter. The reason is that Supplemental only gives you limited coverage while out of the U.S. Say, 2 to 3 months. Thereafter, no coverage for you while you are paying a lot of money on high premium. Most, but not all, Advantage Plan will provide coverage but only for emergency and urgent care situation which for most people is what they need. I believe that both Supplemental and Advantage will require you to pay for services first then file a claim in the U.S. There are available insurance plans in the Philippines but I heard that they are more expensive FOR THE COVERAGE THEY PROVIDE. I'm not sure if Philippine policies will require upfront funding or if hospitals will accept the policy without you having to pay first. Just not too familiar with Philippine policies.

      If u enroll for the first time with supplemental & decides to change it to Advantage, yes u can but...if u switch back to Supplemental again for the next enrollment, they ( Supplemental ) will need you to go for underwriting, and this is the disadvantage especially if you pre-existing medical conditions. Me, I'm turning 65 this year, I will probably go for the Supplemental than Advantage just to have a peace of mind bec I don't know what's gonna happen to my health conditions overtime. Paying co-insurance & deductible are kind of stressful only. So, not much worries if I will enroll on Supplemental.
