that funk breakdown is what sold me on this band. it was SO BOLD to come back in with funk and they pulled it off so well. I listened to Sundowning and This Place Will Be Your Tomb last night and I'm in love with this band!

That “something different” you’re hearing with these tracks is just straight up CONFIDENCE! They know they’ve earned their place and are doing whatever tf they want! To reference the shirt I know you’re wearing… They’ve reached their final form! Lol
But for real, the changes and stuff aren’t near as jarring once you’ve heard it a few times. Granted you may just be more inclined to enjoy the more linear stuff because of what you’ve listened to most of your life. It can take a while to really understand more proggy unorthodox styles. But definitely give it time to grow on you! I think they actually handled the various different styles INCREDIBLY WELL.

First listen to this song, jaw hit ground. Every time I listen I love it more. They are pretty much their own genre - few could pull off what they do so well. Can't wait for them to come back to the states and attend another ritual! Worship!
I was just sitting there the first time I heard it, in a trance at the amazingness of it. Like I was so surprised by the funk at the end. I was sitting there drifting in that synth part following the waves of the piano. Then boom funked me out.
Also, every time I hear this drummer for the first time (which hasn't happened in too long, unfortunately), I think "there's NO WAY he's fitting that fill in there!" Then, he always does. He, like the rest of the musicians, is someone able to be so "extra" but still so tasteful. Just amazing musicianship.
I love the live version of this song because of the addition of a drum solo. It sells the last part so much better. It sounds much more cohesive I think, the way they do it live.

This band making it impossible for me to focus on anyone else for a solid 4 years now, and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna slow down in 2023. I love their confidence in just diving in and doing whatever they want and somehow making it work.
This single was WYLD. This I feels is a culmination of what Sleep Token has been doing over the years. Absolutely in love with it.

I like your reaction and analysis, although i like this song much more than Chokehold.
Chokehold is the opener to their new album and fits well with the other albums. The Summoning is the second track on 'Take Me Back To Eden' but it's on a whole other level. It's absolutely fire.!
Together with the new Converge album, this is definitely my most anticipated album this year.

On first listen, I preferred Chokehold too, but after a second listen The Summoning became one of my all-time favorites. ST continues to evolve. Worship

The chorus gives me Breaking Benjamin and Deftones vibes, I love this entire song, that funk made me laugh from how unexpected but also how GOOD it was
I’ve been looking forward to your reaction to this song! The song could have easily have ended with the soft synth/electronics prior to the funk kicking in and it would have been an incredible song… however… when that funk transition kicked in, it took the song to a whole other level. Definitely an abstract song but it was so interesting and well executed. Sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what they do next!
Beginning verse almost sounds like tool or deftones. But then drops into “holy fuuuuuck!” 2023 is gonna be amazing with more Sleep Token!

Their new tone with these sounds feels futuristic. Or a tone itself feels, in terms of a developmental timeline, like a religious worshipping of the future with an ancient tone. The lore of this band is their worshipping of an ancient diety, and their music definitely reflects the saturation of living that way or experiencing that. So this definitely reminds me of the way a civilization of the future would worship something ancient, whereas sundowning felt modern and in the moment, and tomb felt like the chapter after that experience.

😁I knew it, indeed I didn't enjoy this song at first listening but that's something usual with ST songs (it took 2 years to Bloodsport becoming a "absolutely necessary and must to add" in my playlists). After listening it by the third time, it has been stucked in a loop in my head.
In the other hand, I also feel something different besides the style, and it appear to be the new productor. As I am neither a musician, I just feel odd certain musical arrangement not per se but the way it sounds. Either way, it sounds like an improvement to me.
That is common with ST songs because they’re so complex they need a few listens. That’s a fair point!
I think the reason some people don't like some of the transitions is because they're not traditional. They get you thinking the song is going in a certain direction and then boom. Surprise. That's what makes them different than everyone else. Perfect example is the end of this song... They're going to be huge.

The only thing I wish they changed about the song is when they do the Chorus the second time, they sing it twice before the breakdown.
Not sure if you’re aware but they have a new producer for this album. That may be why they sound a little different.

I have to say my original thoughts were almost identical to your 1st listen, there were elements in this that absolutely loved, the chorus is amazing (sweeping, big, powerful), loved the transition to the ambient piece, loved the solo, loved the funk piece, but on first listen it felt at times too mashed together, and I thought the funk finish didn’t match the tone of the song. I think the ambient piece before made it possible but still didn’t think it fit. As I have listened more that part sounds better there than it did originally. You need to listen to the next two that dropped. Granite and Agua R. Both are 🔥 in my opinion. This is shaping up to be my album of the year. If they keep on the same path as the 1st 4 tracks no doubt this will hold up as my #1
Love this band, love how they challenge and surprise. These last 2 tracks ae so emotionally satisfying but I agree that Chokehold is the better of the two

I think the band has switched producers for this album. George Lever produced Sundowning and TPWBYT, while I think Carl Johnson is producing this upcoming album
