St. Joseph Abbey
For a lot of beekeepers, the crystallization of honey is a constant problem. How to keep the honey in a liquid state 6 months or more after it is harvested is an issue most will face, and if you like to sell your honey that way, you will need to come up with ways to do it. On this video, I give a couple of ways I do just that. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all.
Mr. Ed
I loved the look on that little boys face when those things flew out of that box lol
The snakes get them every time. In case you had not seen the very first video I made with the "snakes in a box," the video link is below. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Tammy.

👍👍👍👍 You have such a positive that it all seems like a vacation :). But I know that all these things take a lot of time and effort.
We were sitting in the car watching and Elizabeth was scrolling through Facebook not really interested until the very end. She wanted to see that rendered wax. Haha
Just goes to show you, a woman knows exactly what she whats. God's peace brother.

That is what a swarm of happy bees sounds like.

1:22 That smile right there shows how much you love what you're doing.
It was truly nice to meet you
Great meeting all of you, and thanks so much for being a part of the video. Who knows, you may see me in the future in your neck of the woods. God's peace Eric.

I like the lift amazing how you set it up you don't waste a lick wow honey bees are awesome sure makes some work really nice set up you have mr ed GOD bless thanks for sharing your work
I will say this, I think the lift is pretty cool myself. Thank you so much for your blessings and for watching. God's peace brother.

Hi Jeff. Watching you stand with all those bees buzzing around makes you look like the quintessential bee whisperer !!!
Navasota, TX Has those love bugs too. One thing I've noticed about them is they love the color white. Every white car or truck I've owned over the years gets covered with those rascals when parked.
Jeff, I just transferred the bees to the VEVOR, I found the Queen,(Dotty) on the 1st frame right away. Thank you Jesus. It’s an unbelievable feeling to become a Bee Keeper for the first time. God’s blessings.
I will never forget, I grew up in a white trailer out in the sticks of Denham Springs, one summer the love bugs were so bad I was afraid to go inside. Back then, all of the kids were outside playing when the weather was clear, and even when it was raining (It wasn't THAT long ago...).
A few years later, one found it's way to my strawberry frosted poptart. I took a bite without noticing. I don't recommend. I haven't eaten a strawberry poptart since.
I have inadvertently tasted love bugs myself riding motor bikes, not a taste I'd recommend either. Great story Rebecca, thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
You’re so positive in your videos. Truly infectious
Thank you very much for your kind words and taking the time to follow along with my bee wrangling adventures. And remember, every Friday I post a brand new video. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed

I ask for that gift every day. Until the next time, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
I’m sure the smell of honey is wonderful in the honey house. Thanks for taking us along on the journey the honey takes before it is ready to sell. Have a great weekend :)
I'm waiting for CZcams to make smell-a-vision available to place on videos so I can share the smells along with the sights. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mary Jane.
Mr. Ed
Nice to see the 🐝 get rewarded for there had work, I stayed a friend in Houston and the love bugs was a pain when out side
You are blessed to have all those machines to help you get things done solo. You are blessed to have help from friends when you need it. To those of us who are walking in the way, it is clear that The Lord is guiding your steps. Your content sends a powerful, unspoken message of what faith and hard work can accomplish. Love you, brother!
As Christ is the source of my life, everything I do flows from that, and it is my greatest desire that my unspoken words speaks volumes to the source of my strength. Thank you for your love and kind words, they are greatly appreciated. God's peace Timothy.

Thank you Mr Ed regards Sydney Australia
I love honey . Lucky me my mother introduced me to it as a very small child , she used to call it gods candy. It has many many uses. God bless you .
Jeff, stick a very long wick in that big wax block and you would have the world's biggest votive candle. We call them kissing bugs in Tucson. Honey does not crystalize in the desert summer temps. You can leave it forever and stick it in the sunlight during the heat of the day and it melts to watery honey. God bless you Jeff. Have a blessed week.
Thanks for the quick follow up on the Layens.
It was totally impromptu, but I was glad to include it in the video. God's peace Kennith.
Mr. Ed
Thank you for having the bird houses..
I just love the purple martins, and I wish they were at the abbey all year long instead of just the 5 months when they are visiting. Thanks for watching. God's peace Kimberly.

@@JeffHorchoff Thanks.
Beautiful. My friend.
Greetings Mr.Ed, one thing you didn’t mention about the love bugs is how often you have to stop your vehicle to clean the windshield and radiator not to mention wash your vehicle. anytime I stopped in a rest area from the florida panhandle past frog cty into eastern texas the bird's always got a hot meal from the lovebugs on the radiator.
Those bugs get thick as a cloud, but unlike a cloud, you don't pass through them without it leaving a trace. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carl.
Mr. Ed
Thank you Jeff xoxo
Ugh, those luv-bugs.
When I lived in Florida, you had to wash your car once a week and the windshield daily.
I'm back in Virginia now and I don't miss those bugs.
Take care and God Bless.
When it's love bug season, often the car is washed twice a day. Thankfully, it's a short season. Thank you for your blessing and for watching, it is very much appreciated. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Jeff, have you thought about you and the monks making some creamed honey with some of your crystallized honey? Im sure it would sell, that stuff is good!
Yes I have, and I know one day it will happen, but today is not the day. Thanks for your suggestion and for watching. God's peace Bud.
Mr. Ed
That lifting device is pretty cool :)
A "must have" tool in our operation, but I agree, it is pretty cool. Great hearing from you again, and thanks so much for watching. God's peace Brother.
Mr. Ed
I am sure surprised that you don't sort the wax a little. The new comb produces such a nice light brick of wax that is appropriate for all kinds of crafts. Treat yourself, Mr. Ed. Blessings
As I was trying to round up all the wax I had, it mattered not weather is was new comb or old, it needed to be rendered. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Eric.
Mr. Ed
Those love bugs really do a number on your car’s windshield and grill.
Folks down here will spray the front of their cars with Pam or some other type of non stick spray to help get them off the fronts of their cars. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Mr Ed, I always love to watch you work in the Honey House! You have some excellent equipment to get the job done.
It never gets old with the bee box trick. Like the honey and wax set up. Very nice honey house. Still in the planning on my new one. Thanks for the video. Take and God bless.

I adore my layens hive and so do my bees. They acted like they had a spring build up in December. I didn't take any honey last year because I got them so late but they came out in spring like it was mid summer
Jeff, Beehive UPDATE!
The bees are in the yard! It is a terrible rainy day so they didn’t want to come out and let me know they hate riding in cars. 🤣🤣🤣
Have a blessed day everyone.
I know you finished your house how'd you and the wife doing been a little while and I know most people don't talk about their family your just kind of interested because you was about to become a monk but you decided to do it in a different way. I like watching your videos

Cheddar colored wax!
I'm always amazed at the different colors of the wax once it has been rendered, but by far, the prettiest is the bright yellow color. Hi. Super video. Milan From Přerov Cz.
Box elder bugs. They get into the house they the smallest little cracks. They need incessantly, and love the sun and warmth.
If you ever want to kill them, water and dawn dish soap.
Dawn dish soap and water is also a great one to kill wasps with. Thanks for watching. God's peace Scott.
Mr. Ed
Good morning Jeff, I get my Nuc tomorrow morning!!!!!😀
Hot dog! I'm excited for you Brian, wait till you see your bees flying, it's going to bee awesome! God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thx Jeff, God bless you brother, you have been a big help. Your videos have and continue to give me the education and confidence for Bee keeping. I am very excited but calm as well. I will let my bees do what they do best and just disturb them enough to keep them healthy and strong. I will be thanking Jesus the 1st time I see my queen. 🙏
Add a landing pad to the long hive.
Multitasking. I need an apron like that.
4:07 I have lots of ants on the inner cover of my hives. They are just a nuisance because they don't get into the hive and they don't "steal" any honey... They just like the heat from the bees to keep their developing eggs / larvae warm...
That they do. You should have seen the carpenter ants I had to kill yesterday, there must have been 1,000 eggs up there and 2,000 ants. Yes, they all met their demise. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Good afternoon, take a look at the vacuum cleaner for bees, how it works and how you then get bees out of there. I want to buy a tie for myself, if you did, give me a link to the video, or a link to the vacuum cleaner.
Hot diggity dog
I’m still puzzled why you didn’t put the frames back in the topbar,
I did replace the frames after the bees went into the hive. God's peace brother.

Decrystalize honey. What happens when you forget to return the thermal sensor inside your hot box. Or should I say the clean up afterwards: czcams.com/video/W3rtsqKKYvs/video.html
I ended up giving the cooked honey to a veterans canteen for their weekly lunch.
I had a 5 gallon bucket last summer crystallized within a month of being extracted. Ordered 1# tubs from BetterBee and now I have creamed honey for sale.
Norms: USA - liquid honey. Europe - crystallized honey.
I hope to be adding creamed honey to the honey sales at the Gift Shop, I certainly have enough stock to work with. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Why do you use plastic barrels instead of stainless steel? The plastic barrels have be releasing some of the chemicals that are used to make them. Into the honey when it’s heating up..
The barrels are made from food grade plastic and there is no "leaching" with that type of plastic. God's peace Tim.
Mr. Ed
🙋
Mr. Ed, do you offer any opportunities to learn from you? I am a just-starting beekeeper, and I’m rolling through New Orleans in two weeks. Would love the possibility to learn from the master himself! God bless
Get in touch with me at oscelata@gmail.com it could happen. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Hi Mr Ed, Thank you so much for your videos, I very much enjoy them. What other things are made at The Abby? I have two questions re crystallized honey. Does reconstituted crystallized honey have a greater tendency to recrystallize than honey that has not crystallized? Second question, I have noted that some honey I have bought does not crystallize even after some years while other honey begins to crystallize after a few months, is there a difference in the chemistry or what other characteristics influence crystallization? I live in a moderate climate, in winter a few days get to below 0 C in summer a few days get to high 30's C
First, the video link below shows what other things are made at the abbey as well as a good look at it. Second, all crystallized honey that has been liquified will again, at some point, crystallize once again, it it the nature of "true" honey. Third, the reason most honeys that don't crystallize won't is because they are not "true" honey, that is there are other compounds mixed into the honey, such as corn starch, fructose, glucose, and who knows what else, that prevent it from happening. By seeing crystalized honey, you know you are getting the real thing. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed
That snake box was fun, especially with the school children.
As a newbie to your channel, does the mixed honey in the drum become a blended honey, like you see written up on a label 'a blend of honey' from different hives?
Must admit, puts me off buying a blend; looks like yukky dregs before it goes into the jars for selling. Also when you're draining that stuff, how come you're not gowned up in a sterilised area if you ubderstand the jist of my ramblings. Remember, l'm new, l'm not criticing, l'm wondering and learning. Amazing!
Thank you. The LORD bless you and continue to make your face shine every day.
Apologies, it's me again! When the bees came and cleaned the drums, do the drums get washed out ready for the next lot? 🙈
You need to check out the very first video I posted on the "snakes in a bee box," video link below, it was several years ago, and from time to time, they make another cameo appearance just for the fun of it. Yes, our honey is blended, but from only "our" bees. Because we have 10 different out yards with bees in them, it would be to difficult to separate the different yards, and all the equipment would have to be cleaned to keep the tastes separate. As to why we are not "gowned up," because bacteria will not grow in honey, it is not necessary to have a sterilized environment to process or bottle honey. Keep asking and learning. Thank you for your blessings and for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Denise.
Mr. Ed
czcams.com/video/bECkUD2hrCM/video.html
Yes, after the bees clean the drums, they are washed, with cold water only so no chemical residue is in the drum, and sealed till next year. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
24:30
What is the residual that the bees are on in the barrel;
Dried out honey foam, bits of wax, other?
It's wax, the honey is not filtered so there is always a bit of wax in it. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
You indicated the kettle heating the honey was set to 100 degrees, what temperature is the wax kettle set to? What temperature is bad for honey, and why?
Wax melts at 145 degrees so I like the temperature about 165 to 175. Still, it will reach boiling if I don't keep on top of it but that's ok if it does, it does not harm the wax. Thanks for watching. God's peace Randy.
Mr. Ed
Hi Ed…..what is magical about not going above a 114’ on the temperature…
At 114 degrees you start pasteurizing the honey, and I have no interest in doing that. Thanks for watching. God's peace Ed.
Mr. Ed
Jeff have you thought of putting creamed honey in the gift shop.
I certainly have, and I know it will happen one day. There have already been lots and lots of requests for it, but being the one and only guy in the operation, except for all the help Good Time Charlie provides, it's just another hat I have not put on. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
I have to ask. Did you get stung at all when you were at the blue barrel at the end?
Not once. The bees have no concern for me when the dinner bell has rung. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
We hate the Love Bugs as they will swarm over roadways and when you hit them with your car they'll eat away the wax and paint if not washed off right away. Cars will pull off the road to wash off or clean their wiper blades because they are full of smashed Love bugs, and the driver can't see. The hot car will often start a fire in the grass! Yes we call them Love bugs, but we don't love them. Even the birds won't eat them.
Thank goodness they only appear 2 or 3 times a year. Thanks for watching. God's peace Jayne.
Mr. Ed
I don't miss the love bugs at all. Nasty things. It's hard to explain them to anyone who has never seen them.
When the bees come to eat like that do they fight each other a lot or do all the different hives just get what they can and ignore bees from other hives?
There is some fighting, but with all that honey to be had, there is not much of it. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Matthew.
Mr. Ed
With all the assorted fur faces, how are we supposed to tell WHO is the REAL Mr. Ed? The one that scares everybody to death with the observation hive, naturally! NICE wax for sure and you get me lusting after that honey and me knowing I can't have it. I'll just have to repent and pray harder................and maybe just watch with one eye! HAPPY honeying, Pal and God Bless You and the Sweetie! Fitting name for a honey wrestler! No, ain't nobody forgot Little Mama the skydiver.
You are to kind Lewie, thank you brother. God's peace.

@@JeffHorchoff Just the Spirit bearing witness, Buddy!
Mr. Ed,
Are you one of the father's at the abbey?
Or do you live and work there.
No, I am not a monk or a priest at St. Joseph Abbey though I was had thought very seriously about becoming one for over 10 years. In fact, for over a year and a half, I did live with the monks in the monastery. I started simply volunteering right after retiring, and I grew to love their life of work and prayer. Now, I am a married man who continues praying with the monks and volunteering in the wood shop as well as keep the bees for the monks. Thanks for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Judi.

Hey Mr Ed, will that honey crystallize again? Also, do you know what makes it get like that to begin with?
My husband likes to get "real" honey but it always gets crystallized after a little while. It winds up wasted because i cant get it out of the bottle & obviously cant heat it safely when its in there lol
Yes, it will crystallize again, and it will do that due to the sugar content of the nectar when it was gathered. By heating the bottle up in hot water, it will always get the remaining honey liquified....just like I did in the video but on a lot smaller scale. Thanks for watching. God's peace Tammy.
Mr. ed
@@JeffHorchoff thank you!
03:10 Do they have enough square area for entry and exit here? Or are they really only orienting after that much time?
From what I observe in all the feral hives I encounter, the hive entrance is not only large enough, it also provides protection for the hive. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. That drum of honey has got to smell amazing.
Question about the end of the video - Would you call those bees that are cleaning up the honey in the drum and the pail robber bees? Or is that a term reserved for when they are robbing out a hive that's not theirs? Thanks.
Yes, they are robber bees. The only difference this time is I welcome the robbing...it helps me. God's peace Ron.
