Our delivery Yacht had a serious interaction with a large pod of Orcas

  • We were on a yacht delivery from the UK to Greece and approaching the Straits of Gibraltar, where we were headed to refuel and take a nights rest.
About 20-30 miles off the Spanish coast nearing Tarifa, we encountered a large pod of orca’s. For the next two hours or so, we were battered and rammed by these beautiful beasts. There have been a number of interactions with this specific pod over the past year.
Perhaps it is due to the lack of food that they are experiencing. Perhaps they have just had enough with mankind. But they spent their time ramming the rudder over and over. At one point we witnessed one of the Orca’s swimming off with a large chunk of the rudder in its mouth.
It was a humbling experience. One that I would be happy to never go through again, but I am deeply grateful too. It was the most majestic thing to be that close to these apex predators. I will never forget this day.
We managed to limp back to Gibraltar and from the dockside we were able to see the damage to the rudder. I’m grateful that we still had steering and that nobody was injured or the need for a liferaft to be deployed on a sinking boat. All was fine. But the delivery was over. The yacht will need to be assessed and hauled out the water for inspection. I do feel sorry for the owner of the boat who will not have his boat waiting for him in Greece like he had hoped.
From there I flew back to the UK and took a connecting flight out to Greece where I am now, on my own boat, preparing her to go back in the water and sail back to the UK. Don’t think I will be going via the Gibraltar Straits. One orca interaction was more than enough. I hear the French Canals are lovely this time of year.

    Hi folks.
It’s been a while since I updated any videos. I sailed back from Greece to the Uk and made my way via the western coast of Italy and eventually made my way up the rivers and canals of France. I’ll be posting new videos of all of the journey and more footage of the Orca interaction shortly.
Thanks for all the comments and posts. Please subscribe for future updates.
    Thanks
    Martin.

I cannot understand what you have gone through but I like what you say when you said "they are beautiful". You obviously respect them. They obviously are having fun. Little buggers. But we go in their oceans. Disturb them. And make loud noises with Sonar. And as you say, eat all their fish. Which is why I won't eat fish now. I feel for these dolphins. And I love how you still respect them. I'm glad you got back safely.

I've been kick flipped by a large bottle nose dolphin when underwater. Just a warning with no actual contact, but it actually made a bang noise and knocked me sideways. These sounds are orca warnings of danger. I learned this as a child watching them in Oregon and how they’d call before bad storms or when the large barge type boats were moving through their hunting grounds.
In this video…The smaller ones are mimicking the larger ones. Almost like they are being taught. To mess with the rudder is a direct intent. They must have a keen grasp of how the boat is controlled or have been able to correlate that part of the boat with the boat doing what they want it to.
Maybe they’re keeping it out of their hunting grounds?
A bit of research says that biologists and whale experts are theorizing that one or a few orcas were injured by a boat and adapted to teach their young to disable the threat. The boat being the threat.
We know orcas are incredibly intelligent and that they can plan hunts as a pod so perhaps this is them adjusting finally to the invasiveness of humanity.

In America you shoot everything, what a backward society. It is NOT your ocean, it is the Orca’s ocean, how a human can lay claim to a kingdom of a creature that evolved there just shows what sort of messed up “logic” you have. The Orcas are not being vindictive, angry or any other human emotive term. They are nearly always juveniles that take part and playing, learning how to take down a big prey perhaps but even if you jumped in they’d not harm you. Not a single person has ever been killed by an Orca while it is in its natural habitat.

Thank you for that calm and interesting narration of the situation, I hate this scaremongering and meretricious videos with screaming and shouting people, so exaggerating dramatic. I still have my respect for orcas and I dint know why they do it, had interactions with orcas (never hostile or so aggressive) on some spots and I think yours will be an experience no one would like to have twice. So I really appreciate your calm way of narration.
I see it the way that we are invading (voluntary) their natural habitat, they have no choice or way to go anywhere, they can not just jump out of the water and walk away nor can they easily change their natural born habits. But we have chosen to invade their habitat so we have to respect them abs their behaviour and hope that nature not stands up against us, I think if they really wanted to harm us or sink a boat they would have done so many times, they just break rudders, not one bist yet sunk or was close to and no human yet was harmed or injured. They easily could jump onto deck to try breaking the hull, they never did at any time…

My guess as to why this large pod is damaging rudders of countless boats:- fishing boats are throwing food overboard to stop them damaging their boat. The lack of food has them doing this for a free meal. It's only a guess, but they won't spend hours damaging boats at the risk of injuries for no reward.

There is a problem with your logic here. Fishing boats do not get attacked and neither do catamarans, only monohull yachts. If they were looking for food they’d hassle fishing trawlers not yachts. This has become a “fad” behaviour just like the other fads that have been observed such as wearing sea weed as “hats” for a few years, this fad will pass.

Orca are very adaptable and would not exhibit this behavior towards humans unless they felt they had to. they are an endangered species and travel around the world and change their diets and adapt to different prey in order to survive. Seems this Gibraltar area has become important to them in this manner and they are desperate to keep it working for them. The Portuguese conservation authorities recon some of those orca were deliberately injured by sports fishermen because the orca were out for their fish 🐟🎏
Trouble is they are like elephants very intelligent, long lived and pods are controlled by Matriarch's.. they teach their cultures to the young.. so dont think they will be forgetting anytime soon.
It needs a distraction strategy and possibly some underwater measures ..sounds and possibly 👁️👁️markings on the rear undersides.. masks on the back of the head have proven enough to deter tiger attacks..
If eyes dont work try orca markings on the hull or just disruptive patterns ...it works with sharks.
As for sounds ever seen an elephant react to a digeridoo or classical piano.. someone needs to do some constructive none harmful experimental research. 🤞🏻🌊🐳

    Highly competitive.
Highly aggressive towards prey or competing species
Blue Tuna are a major food source for these orcas.
    Humans have been over-harvesting.
Maybe, pure conjecture here: maybe, they are perceiving humans and their boats as competitors for their food source??
Almost seems like they are experimenting, ( or carrying out ) some tactics for disabling their competitors?
Seems like what they are doing is part analysis, part agression and part tactical.
Probably just my over-active imagination. But this is all very interesting.

I see tail slaping around min 2:50 and bubble making somewhere around 5:40, both known hunting techniques for other porpoises... and somewhere I read some Orcas (hate "killer whale" name) hunt bigger whales (ripping their fins would sure be a great way to disable such a big prey)... and I'll keep up looking for more info so we can find a solution that benefits all afected species.

Thing is i think they're smart enough to know exactly what they're doing, i think they intentionally disable the boats without causing fatal damage to them. they know how to get floating mammals in the water when they want to and they're easily capable of sinking these boats but instead they cause a restrained amount of damage. i think it shows just how intelligent they are especially if they really are showing restraint.

Smart Orca studying boat, while eyeing the humans. They Identify the rudder as a key ‘fin’ that can disable the boat. Like Grizzly bear. Orca, are also named “whale-killers”, and not without cause. They are huge wild predators. So whether playing or hunting during these encounters. It is moot. Either way it is life-threatening behavior to the humans onboard the boat if they disable the rudder at sea. I wonder if an underwater speaker could be lowered into the water for emitting painful sounds that would stop this behavior without physically harming the “whale-killer” (Orca).

I have a hard time putting that on food or bad behaviour. Those animals may experience a sound problem that we don’t know of. If boat and wave scientists could check (and they surely did) if a rudder make an annoying sound for Orcas, it could explain part of the problem. A special rudder with a different shape could make a difference, I don’t know.

Have to laugh at the lets have tea LOL but it is best to be calm. However hard when 20 orcas are proving they can break a hole in your boat no problem. That’s scary as all. One boat said they stayed inside when the attack happened because they are told not to interact. And the orcas kept trying to look at them in the windows and also would swim next to the boat and use their blow holes to get attention. He said after the fact he felt they wanted the humans to interact with them. And felt they just seemed to want to move the boat around. They don’t seem to want to kill the humans just scare them to death. Because if they wanted they could sink the boat easily. They also haven’t tried to rip humans off the boats and they can do that easily too just by banging it hard enough to knock them. They could wreck a boat if they really wanted to. And if hungry eat the humans. But they don’t want that. So it could be they don’t want people fishing and they want to give a good scare. They haven’t sunk any boats so far. One small one did get a hole but the orcas left they got rescued. So not sure they meant to harm but probably wanted to bump the boat around. There is video of one taking a boat that was anchored and moving all over playing with it. Eventually lost interest and it was recovered. So who knows at this point what they want. But hopefully they keep not harming humans. Because if they decide we taste good and fill them up more than fish well then humans are screwed. I rather they just play with the boats and strand us for the coast guard to rescue- then have them sink to have a meal. Still very scary and I would probably have a heart attack you guys handled this so well.

You can find it yourself if you peruse the public reports of the Guardia Civil that work in those waters daily. But a word of warning, though those documents are public, their content can damage the sensibility of people not used to "gore".
You also need to know what the orcas do in Canary Islands' waters, and it is not pretty either, but they do that to survive, like sharks and any other opportunistic carnivore, eating everything, be it finned or biped...

A good bet much of this behaviour is due to the Commercial Fishing in the area which has stripped the oceans of large fish. These Orca are highly intelligent and another indication any easy to attack vessel will be taken out as these hunters seek the frail and weak. Not much they can do to commercial ships- Only humans can do that- don't eat fish and/or limit the catches and fishing fleets. Time we gave back but it may be too late.

Doesn’t make a difference. Even if they cant destroy the rudder, the pintels and connections to the boat cannot be made any stronger than they are currently..the boats that have been sunk and indeed the ones damaged have taken strain at various load bearing parts of the rudders connection points…there is always a critical weakness somewhere. They are just too strong. They will break whatever they choose to play with.
