【Synopsis】This film is adapted from a true story. In the autumn of 2001, a pair of outdoor travelers found two old people in the remote mountains and old forests. They were Shishan and Honggu who disappeared from the village more than 40 years ago. Today, they seem to be living in a primitive society of slash-and-burn farming, living in self-made earthen houses, lighting self-made oil lamps, eating self-grown food, drinking mountain spring water, and everything is self-sufficient. For decades, they have given birth to children and gained steadfastness. Nearly half a century has passed, and Shi Shan has chiselled more than 6,000 stone steps on the mountain with his own hands, in order not to let his own woman go out to wrestle, and he himself has grown from a gray-haired old man to a white-haired old man. The 6,000-level stone steps are called "the ladder of love", and the ancient love is thought-provoking.

My wife and I spent a cumulative seven years in China, while I was serving as a Visiting Professor in Shanghai, Shen Zhen, and primarily in Chengdu. During that time, we both learned as much as I taught through immersing ourselves into the culture and traveling widely. She is Vietnamese, where the culture and people are similar - but markedly different in some ways. But we continue to learn, and it is enhanced by owning and enjoying marvelous Chinese music and video products, like this one. This is one of the most beautifully filmed, directed, and well performed products we have ever seen; it is priceless!
I neglected to add that there is also a ten-year age difference between my Vietnamese wife and myself. But as portrayed in this incredibly touching tale, we have been in love since we met in 1966, and we have been married since 1969. True love endures despite wide cultural and age differences.
This movie made me cry. I lived that kind of life as a child. Now after living in the City for many years, I come home to live this life I missed. The bonded love between two people no matter the age gap moved me to tears. I wish to see more movies like this. Thank you for this beautiful story.

Wow! Shi Shan has chiseled away over 6000 plus stone steps with his own bare hands for his beloved Honggu. What devotion! Very touching and rare classic story.

That s my favourite chinese movie. It showes a tye of love so rare upon the Earth but that s the type of love The Creator desired for us, a man so honourable like that, so rare, he really loved her devotedly, sacrificial and true love, not looking to appearance, or social status, or age gap, everything our society engaged on it, so rare and so beautiful soul he was! A rare type on planet Earth! This story makes me cry, it s almost the same love i described at my novel, romance novel i ve written in portuguese.
