  • We are finally here, the finished loop and well, was it worth the wait? after a redesign to the capacitor and loop connections, finding out that I needed more capacitance than I had, and battling with the weather it is up and working.
    It is big and beautiful, Well big anyway.
    Still have fun and give it a go...
    Please subscribe and like.
    Cheers and Many thanks for watching
    Mike - M0MSN
    P.S. do not take my word for it, give it a go for yourself.

    Awesome video Mike, thanks for the explanation of dual band ability of the figure 8 makes more sense now. Guess upsizing it is the next step to get your magical 80/40 or go all out for 160/80. Now it needs a rotator to get the directivity to beam where you want it to land.

    Nice work on the loop Mike, I enjoyed the video series. I didn't realize you were so short until you stood next to the loop. 🤣
    So what happens now? Revisions to make it play on 80 meters or settle for a really nice 40/20 loop? Either way, I think you did a fantastic job. That capacitor needs a clear tube to display your handy work.

    Hi Mike have you considered switching in some more capacitance when you want to try 80m - maybe you have a trombone lying around somewhere?? Also I agree with wecb640, you should use some thicker wire...coax braid perhaps (i use strips cut from 25mm copper pipe) for the interconnects. Excellent work de m0tfy

      Not concerned about the wiring on the capacitor as I intend to remove and upgrade the whole thing again shortly, but thanks for your Input.

    @mw0mwz430 Před 2 lety

    Just a thought Mike, the loop that you drive that with (the 70cm one), try squashing it a little so that its not round (so that more of the lower 1/2 is closer to the figure of 8) - this (in theory) improves the coupling and can raise your output RF quite a bit, found some information about that whilst looking up designs for building a loop myself (that I never got around to) :)

  • @M0RMY

    It works very well Mike - a lot of effort and it has paid off. It is bloody unsightly and awful to look at and thus is a ironic piece of post-modern lawn art. Well done - I genuinely think it is fantastic. Ugly as hell.........but fantastic.........:). Science in the kitchen right there. Brilliant.

    3:30 be careful when connecting copper wires with zinc-plated washers and nuts. These metals form a galvanic pair. The copper part should be tinned, and the whole construction covered with a varnish, if possible.

    Very impressive build, Mike! The fully enclosed air capacitor is spectacular and my favorite part of this build! What's the advantage of your figure-8 loop over, say, a 5M circumference single loop? Is one more efficient or better at DX-ing than the other? Have you been able to reach across the Pond with yours yet? Great build, and Happy New Year!

    Fascinating, you don't say how tall you are but I'm guessing the loop is 10 to 12 foot high? It's good to see that even well grounded antenna gurus (pun intended) and CZcams megastars have to stop for the cat. Just the same as us mere mortals really. 😉

    Great video Mike !! Really enjoyed following this ! Aside (inspired by cat) - not sure who is in the household, but do you announce to them that you are about to record? I know you can edit out things but generally the video filming appears smooth without interruptions. During summer / autumn 2020 I was filming training videos at home in the lounge using a green screen etc (for day job due to Covid closing hospitality_) and it was always a battle to keep everyone (wife, sons, animals) and everything (washing machine etc) quiet! Cheers, Mark, 2E0MSR.

    Mike, I very much enjoy you videos on mag loops - tends to brighten up the dark Swedish winter days :)
    In this video, you say that the loop is only 40-50% efficient on 80m whereas it is 80-90% efficient on the 40m band. My problem is that I don't understand what you mean by efficiency in this context. Is it efficiency in the sense of ratio of the power radiated from the antenna relative to the power delivered to the antenna? If so, how do you measure the radiated power? Please enlighten me :)

    Hi Mike, well done on building the loop. Personally I think it looks brilliant. One question, I see that the coax connected to the driven loop is connected one side to the centre of the coax and one side to the outer screen. Does the radio not see it as a dead short? Or am I missing something and need to read up on loops? Cheers, Carlo.

    • @philwhoareyou3677
      @philwhoareyou3677 Před 2 lety +1

      You can't look at it in the DC domain. Like a transformer at DC looks very low resistance but in the AC domain its impedance is a ratio of the other coupled windings, in this case the Figure of 8 and the Capacitor form a tuned circuit. Whos impedance couples to the driven element once coupled become 50 ohms or there abouts. I hope that helps?
