why did they laugh when he said "I had a privileged life and I got lucky and I'm not happy" I think that really said a lot. like even if you got lucky and were born into a good career it's still so hard to really be happy
+Julian Suarez A proper laugh is a reflex. His comedic timing and spontaneity is what triggers that laughing and perhaps it's some time after that, the intense meaning sinks in and hits you.
+Julian Suarez Bo thrives on dark humor, he said that part in a way that was meant to make people laugh. Also a lot of his stuff makes you laugh and think at the same time
+Julian Suarez It's quite obvious from Bo's former shows and all his work that his performances are a way for him to handle his own darkness, doubts and sadness. It's not at all uncommon that comedians are funny partially because they use that to fight their own sadness.
I watched this stand-up on my 16th birthday. 22.06.2016. This June I’m going to be 21, and i’m going to watch new special “Inside”. I was dreaming for him to make another one. I can't wait. Bo Burnham's "What" was literally the best stand up comedy performance I have ever seen. He took stage comedy to an entertainment level that most stage comedians don't even attempt, and just hit it out of the park. It's one of the only comedy routines I have watched several times.
+Selestrielle Just wait until you hear the entire song. It's Bo's most epic piece, and the inspirational aspect is both sincere and sarcastic in context.
The ending of the show was so real; so genuine, and it made the end result of the shows impact on me a perfect combination of happy and striving to be happy. I applaud and praise Bo for what he created, and am grateful for all the things he made me realize, funny or serious. The last 7 minutes are the most poetic and emotionally provoking 7 minutes I've ever experienced in my life. I swear Bo was talking straight to me or something. Am I alone on this or do other people feel the same?
no, I definitely felt the same, but then in the last three minutes, I just felt this shift in who he was talking to, and it was one of the weirdest, but also coolest experiences all week.
I legitimately feel like those last few minutes could be analyzed in literature classes because after watching it there's so many layers that could be peeled away at and examined and so many small nuances that really allow you to know exactly what he was talking about.
Oh, I would so love to analyse so much of Bo's work in literature classes. We Think We Know You, art is dead., Can't Handle This, Are You Happy, Kill Yourself, the list goes on. All would be great fun to analyse.
@@bobsprock it's been so many years since I wrote this, but the sentiment persists. Bo Burnham manages to take the entire special, which seems like a series of non-sequitor bits and jokes on the surface level, and tie it together with a central theme. For example, the clown bit at the beginning of the special has a very strong message within the context of the entire special. Furthermore, Bo's demeanor and many of his jokes throughout the special contribute to the 'climax' and overall message.
What's blowing my mind is that he ends this special alone in that empty room in his house. The thematic continuity from this special to "Inside" is so genius that it's too bad he can't even take credit for planning it, since there's no way he could have. 5 years between and it feels like it picks right up where if left off, while simultaneously feeling like a totally different artistic medium

I feel like Bo isn't just a comedian, he is a whole new genre of entertainment in itself. It's like theatrical standup. Some comedians have like a few segments of theatre, and you laugh at it and then you go back to your life, Bo makes it an experience, makes you think etc...
and them pentacorn spoke thus "hello bo i have been looking for you...." "bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang (reloads) bang bang bang bang bang" he was safe for now but he knew the dark thoughts would soon return
You are brilliant. I really mean it. Your "lower your expectations" song made me cry and laugh - I'm not kidding. There's something so unbelievably true in it, that it made me genuinely feel sad for not being with anyone right now - yet made me laugh mere seconds later, again because it's true. Great delivery on your material and it's just kept so real - you don't censor "offensive" bits and you don't have to, because you deliver them with such confidence people must get it - and if they don't get it and they get offended, it's not your job to apologize. It's all just very brilliantly balanced. So.. again. You are brilliant. Also, the last bit, after the show ... You set up a "questionnaire" and I was ready to say "10" when I thought it was a question of how much I enjoyed the show... but when it was instead a questionnaire if I'm happy.. and the numbers started to go down.. 9.... 8... 6... 4.... I don't know why, but I started crying again. I'm not happy. But in all fairness... I should be. Something about all of this was alot bigger than it seemed on the surface.. I rarely feel like thanking for entertainment, but ... Thanks - and I wish you well :)
I'm so glad Bo has stuck to this and focused on this for so long. Every song in every show has such a deep meaning... using comedy to get through to people, Bo does it best.
Seriously why are people freaking out about Bo just for the fact that he's coming out of dormancy instead of reading the message that he is giving in this video? "if you can live your life without an audience, you should do it" is the most amazing quote I've ever heard from Bo, and that's beating even "Quotes are for dumb people who can't think of something intelligent to say on their own." Just to put that into perspective. This show is going to mean a lot, in terms of actual life and dig into Bo and how much of an actual person he is, and different to other performers, since they want to live with an audience because they feel like that's their life, whereas Bo wants more than that from life. My interpretation is that he's been saying that he's trying to "live his life without an audience", because he doesn't want people to depend on him, and he feels under pressure from the public. This is going to ring of more truths than the rest of his shows ever have, ever. I'm honestly so hyped for this it's unreal.
I agree. He's got the goal of imparting a message, and the show is not simply about "being funny". It's going to be deep and I think it will resonate with people who know to really listen for the meaning. The trailer is chock full of insights and deeper meanings in my opinion. The forest represents freedom from the audience, and while he talks about living life without an audience, at the very end of the trailer, the curtain opens, and he hasn't escaped the audience at all! It's not as if he's saying "go live life without an audience"; instead he's saying, IF you can live your life without an audience, do it! But he's not even sure if it can be done. I'm not sure if it can be done, but he's saying, if you think you can, go for it and try to do it.
I found out about Bo Burnham 3 weeks ago and I've watched all his videos and listened to as many songs as I could find. And now this is coming out. I cant WAIT
Bo Burnham is so funny, and yet so tortured. It's such a conflicting thing to watch. One moment hilarious, the other terrifyingly emotional. It's hard to deal with.
I had an incredible time experiencing this live in Chicago and I still think about it constantly. I have missed Bo but am glad he took his time off to get better. I hate that covid put him back in his room but am thankful for what it gave us. I've heard people say 'Inside' is "darker than his other stuff," and to that I say you obviously weren't paying attention then. Bo has the ability to crack me up and gut me like a fish and that's all I've ever wanted. Rewatching this trailer gave me goosebumps. You'll never see this, Bo, but thank you.
I just watched this performance. I cried in sadness, admiration and from laughter. I think he needs more people to know about his shows. Not because he needs a bigger audience, but because he deserves more people who really listen.
Everyone should give Bo respect. The way he delivers his comedy in his own perspective while simultaneously making the crowd love him is Amazing. And all while hating the industry hes in. After i saw one of his recent interviews saying this could be his last show, i was heartbroken thinking comedy could lose one of its greatest acts. His screenplay "Gay Kid and Fat Chick" was an amazing read. From "Art is Dead" where he shows how the publics view on art has changed. To "We think we know you" where he drowned out the criticism with his music. The ending Kanye Rant to his special really puts into perspective how he started off such a good comic making us laugh, but writing and performing for himself. And turned into a Great comic putting our happiness and enjoyment before his own. Bo Burnham truly is one of the Best comics to ever Live. I Respect him 100% and whatever he decideds to do in the future, i will support him. We Love You Bo! You Make us Happy.
I know I'm late to the game, but I just saw "Make happy". I never had a comedy special make me cry. And the ending was just... so genuine, but also almost too close for comfort. It was... I mean... Just wow!
I've never been a Bo fan but I just watched this and...holy shit. This show is amazing. I was tearing up laughing and by the end almost genuinely crying.
June 3, 2016 12:02AM I'm about to fall asleep, as there's a lot to do in the morning. When I remember that Make Happy is on Netflix as of two minutes ago. That short burst of energy from that knowledge, has lasted me the next 5 hours and 7 minutes after finishing watching the show. I don't think I'll ever go to sleep.
I guess I should stop trying to get an audience, then. I guess it's okay to perform, just don't look for an audience. Theoretically you can perform in front of those who are already your audience (family, friends etc.) and not need any more? I don't know. Bo is really good at these deep meaningful statements. Of course, that's me talking in a way where I think I know him. We think we know so many people. We don't.
this is an amazing show. he doesn't get enough credit for this. it's amazing how far he's come, from his bedroom making silly songs to standing on stage in front of hundreds of people at a time. this show is absolutely amazing and I am in complete awe of how inspiring and motivating Bo Burnham is. he's going to do amazing things, whether through comedy or whatever else he wishes to pursue. I will support him no matter what.
Fin his other specials if you haven't already. "What." is on netflix and youtube so you probably already found it, and there's also "words words words". I know it's on spotify for free, and iTunes for money, and maybe somewhere else.
So freaking hype. I was devastated to see that I discovered you two weeks AFTER I found your videos. And I'm so so happy I get the chance to watch the show and hopefully I can come see your third one. But for now, I'm so happy for you Bo! You deserve it
I want cry, he is so incredible. I'm so excited for this-- even though I saw it live I need to see it again because this was such an amazing show, brought tears to my eyes out of laughter and heartache.
The show was amazing! I love the mixture of making me laugh and tugging at my heart strings. It's awesome to watch his stuff from old to new, you can see his comedy mature. Great job!
I wasn't expecting the trailer alone to convey the profundity and brilliance of the special so well. I love how they used the music to Can't Handle This but left out the lyrics. Really hypes it up effectively.
I just saw this on Netflix and absolutely loved it. Bo, you killed it at the end with your Kanye skit. You did that better than he could have done it himself. I have never seen your vids before but I really like how you intertwined music and comedy in these performances. Very unique. Much love.
I just wanted to tell you that watching this show made me cry. I love your art and I can physically feel what your putting out there inside of my heart when I listen to you. Thank you!
Watched the show alone and i'm not going to give the same review you see in every other comment with quotes such as "This show was depressingly realistic and change my outlook on life", but rather, I want to draw your attention to the last few moments of the show. Where Bo can be see leaving the room to a happy wife/girlfriend holding a small puppy looking happy and as comfortable as can be. To all of you that think Bo is unhappy, you are wrong. If I were Bo, and I had the opportunity to make a revolutionary show and speak my mind to the world about my philosophy and ideas, I would be pretty proud and happy as I am positive Bo is. Bo is not sad guys. The show was a trick to make you think he was, feel sorry for him, and learn a lesson about "living with an audience". The concept people have drawing from this, is that entertainment and media can be manipulative and biased. Performers and songwriters can brainwash you, not because they are smarter than you, but because you let them. Why? Why do we let famous people inspire us. They are not god. They are not all knowing. They are people, too. They have problems. They are not perfect. Be happy with who you are, not who you want to be. Bo Burnham, if I am wrong please say so. That is what I have drawn from the experience. "To Be happy, Make happy."
I know I'm 2 years too late but, oh well. Everyone has a different interpretation on Bo's stuff. In my eyes I saw that last scene to show him getting away from his audience, and living his own personal life, which is the one he enjoys and the one that makes him happy. I will have to agree with your last statement but I actually think that for this show in this time, Bo basically has two different personas that I guess are going against each other. He doesn't want to perform because he doesn't want his entire life revolving around a bunch of people that are in a sense just strangers. He wants the time to be in his personal life, and that is what makes him happy. Now I know now he's released a movie and all that, but this was purely an analyzing of that segment of that show pretending as if the time was still then. I would like to hear if anyone else still has any more thoughts on it.
+jana r. this show began being performed live in late 2014 and early 2015. Bo recently said in an interview that this may be one of his last live shows if not his last show. He said he's tired of focusing on himself. He really didn't give an idea of where his career was headed, maybe he'll keep performing, maybe he won't. Make Happy actually focuses a lot on his anxieties of performing (especially towards the end).
+av4d oh i thought he began performing in early 2015. one of my friends went to see his show and he thinks that bo's introverted nature and aforementioned anxiety will lead him to become a writer for a show. i don't know; i haven't seen Make Happy yet. whatever bo's decision will be, i hope he's happy.
+jana r. well he performed a few segments in late 2014 at certain events and the full show came in early 2015. And Bo did say that if he doesn't perform live he'll be writing for something. I won't spoil Make Happy for you, but I can assure you that you'll love it! And same here dude. I'll still support him no matter what he does in the future, I just hope that he's content and happy.
Bo, I just watched your show on Netflix, it was incredible. I used to watch you for a while in the days of "Bo fo' show", then casually moved on or got distracted, clocking you in a movie cameos once in a while... But this was unbelievably good. Thank you.

Hi verified channel
How the fuck u gon change my whole outlook on life in a minute and a half
Shit, i forgot my netflix login.
That is legit me right now ;_;
Same
OMG I KNOW RIGHT
BLESS someone uploaded it to CZcams. The video was uploaded by someone else and they monetized it but it ended up having all the money go to Bo:-)
Ethan Rundhaug-Zinkle is it still up? i dont have a netflix account
Saw the show in Indianapolis in March 2015. Thank fuck I can see it again.
I was at that same show, Egyptian room audience represent!
Wait he was in Indy last year in March!?!? And I didn't go????! I'm so mad at myself
wait he was indy??? man I wish I would've known
I'm so glad Bo has stuck to this and focused on this for so long. Every song in every show has such a deep meaning... using comedy to get through to people, Bo does it best.
first video on Bo's channel in what feels like years and it's a trailer for a new show coming out in 2 weeks. fuck. yes.
"A Truly Happy Man is Happy in an empty Room" always loved this quote :)
Honestly Bo ties in super deep concepts within his comedy, and that's why I like him so much.
His performance was absolutely beautiful. My heart is heavy with his words.
I'm not sure if it can be done, but he's saying, if you think you can, go for it and try to do it.
carfreelori That is exactly my point! :)
Is it not a tad ironic you are quoting Bo from this video then immediately quoting him on how quotes are stupid?
Mordecai That's the point; I like the irony of that quote.
I found out about Bo Burnham 3 weeks ago and I've watched all his videos and listened to as many songs as I could find. And now this is coming out. I cant WAIT
Join the club.
We gave everyone our lives, and for no reason.
Perform (Everything) to each other (all of the time).
1:29, this one shot of the audience needs to be appreciated more. It added way more feeling to his speech.
I feel like crying while watching this because this is the last show that he performed after quitting performing
Bo Burnham is so funny, and yet so tortured. It's such a conflicting thing to watch. One moment hilarious, the other terrifyingly emotional. It's hard to deal with.
This maybe be one of my favorite trailers, the music mixed with his monologue from the show is brilliant
God, it's been too long.

clique
5 years later and he's still a legend
1:02 - after I can't Handle This and Inside, this and I'm unhappy line with a laugh track hits harder ....
It was... I mean... Just wow!
Wow, first time I saw this trailer and it's the day it's released. Sick.
Same here Ha
This was freaking incredible, enjoyed every second of it, funny as shit, and such a great message throughout the performance
I've never been a Bo fan but I just watched this and...holy shit. This show is amazing. I was tearing up laughing and by the end almost genuinely crying.
Can’t handle this as a instrumental for background music :,)
June 3, 2016 12:02AM I'm about to fall asleep, as there's a lot to do in the morning. When I remember that Make Happy is on Netflix as of two minutes ago. That short burst of energy from that knowledge, has lasted me the next 5 hours and 7 minutes after finishing watching the show. I don't think I'll ever go to sleep.
Oh shit. That was the most touching and succinct trailer for a comedy special ever
We don't.
+austiinos I understand this refrence
We think
we know
you
Duty Calls Exactly.
Do what makes you happy.
this is an amazing show. he doesn't get enough credit for this. it's amazing how far he's come, from his bedroom making silly songs to standing on stage in front of hundreds of people at a time. this show is absolutely amazing and I am in complete awe of how inspiring and motivating Bo Burnham is. he's going to do amazing things, whether through comedy or whatever else he wishes to pursue. I will support him no matter what.
My birthday is June 2nd, and this is an awesome gift since I've been listening to songs from what over and over.
Bo! Glad to see you're back bro! I just discovered you 3 days ago, but I've watched many of your videos. Keep doing great things
+Toogit 5 I sure did, and I'm glad I did
Fin his other specials if you haven't already. "What." is on netflix and youtube so you probably already found it, and there's also "words words words". I know it's on spotify for free, and iTunes for money, and maybe somewhere else.
That was fucking deep
You're not allowed to say "deep" after "#deep"
+Jason He just did dumb ass,
+Jason okay Jason thanks for letting me know what im allowed to say
Lol Jason, our youtube comrades obviously don't know a clever joke when they see one, but I laughed, so thanks.
an oddly profound message paired with his amazing comedy. I love comedians who also are so god damn wise.
Much love.
im crying im so fucking happy
Guy's an absolute genius can't wait to see this later
I just wanted to tell you that watching this show made me cry. I love your art and I can physically feel what your putting out there inside of my heart when I listen to you. Thank you!
You explained this so perfectly and it hits so close to home. I've discovered you an hour ago and I'm blown away by your talent
This looks so good! I wish Bo would come to the UK sometime soon 👍
Left brain - Right brain
Amazing! All of your material is so creative! I am so ready for this! Thank you for still creating new content Bo.
Just watched your new special and I just want to say it was fantastic. Your amazing at your craft.
Literally only bought Netflix again so I could see this! So exited! :D
Same
This might be his last comedy show for a while. And trust me (anyone who hasn't seen it live), you'll be blown away.
+av4d by a while do you mean two years or..?
+jana r. this show began being performed live in late 2014 and early 2015.
Links?
1 Million! Congrats dude!
Bo, I just watched your show on Netflix, it was incredible. I used to watch you for a while in the days of "Bo fo' show", then casually moved on or got distracted, clocking you in a movie cameos once in a while... But this was unbelievably good. Thank you.
