My incredible seventh day in Albania continued in the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town of Berat! Join me as I explore an old Ottoman village and lots of other local attractions!

My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I started our afternoon adventure on Gorica Bridge, which spans the Osum River. Across the bridge is the Ottoman village, which is said to have a thousand windows!
On the left bank of the Osum River is Gorica, where you’ll find lots of historical homes and buildings. Walking along the stone houses was like stepping back in time to the 18th century! It had a gorgeous Ottoman/Mediterranean feel and reminded me of Cannakale, Turkey.
Because Berat is a UNESCO site, when home renovations occur, they must be in the same style as before. Next, I saw an old home with a gate that was falling apart, and the 19th-century Church of Saint Spiridon. This side of the city is less touristy than the other, but it was really beautiful and authentic.
Across the river was the Mangalem area, which lies at the foot of the castle hill. It was really pretty, but I could see more restaurants and hotels there. There, we saw the 16th-century Bachelor’s Mosque, which was under construction. Along the street were restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops, including the Unique Art shop, which sells beautiful wood carvings of sites around the city. I bought one for €65!
Next, we headed to the Berat National Ethnographic Museum, which is located in a 400-year-old traditional house. It shows the way the house was used, and displays clothing, head pieces, pottery, textiles, and more.
Next, we drove up to Berat Castle in the Kalaja area, which is located on the castle hill. The castle is over 2,400 years old and dates back to Illyrian times.
The castle is unique because it’s a living castle, so people still live there! It’s full of restaurants, souvenir shops, and stone houses. There’s also a small church.
Then, we stopped by Restorant Onufri for lunch on their terrace! We started with rakija and then got several dishes: stuffed cabbage; okra; fërgesë with red peppers, green peppers, tomatoes, and feta cheese; beans; salad with cucumber, tomatoes, onions, and feta; eggplant; moussaka; cannellonis; byrek; and chicken with rice!
The beans were moist yet crunchy and full of thyme. Next was the fresh and juicy eggplant, and the okra, which contained thyme, tomato sauce, and oil! Next was the flaky byrek, which contained a nice, fluffy cheese. The stuffed cabbage was stuffed with rice and tomatoes! Then, I had more strong rakija!
The cannellonis had minced meat, tomatoes, and cheese on top. Next was the moussaka, which contained meat, potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. I loved the crispiness on the bottom! The fërgesë was oily and full of pepper flavor. The chicken and salad were also great, but the eggplant really blew me away!
After lunch, we headed to Muzeu Onufri, which is dedicated to Onufri, a famous 17th-century painter. It used to be an 18th-century church. Outside in the courtyard are beautiful preserved frescoes from 1797, but I couldn’t film inside the museum.
Then, we went to the walls atop the hill, where you get incredible views over Berat, and the watchtower where we got stunning views of the entire area. I could see the city, the river, the old town, the bridges, and the mountains. This was one of my favorite places in Albania so far!

Do yourself and the rest of us a favor and get rid of "Ottoman" from the title. We were occupied by the Ottomans for 500 years if you didn't already know.
Hi 👋🏼 thank you for the good promotion of albania. Where Berat was built as a city the ottomans were still in Mongolia. And the halls are not called Greek but village halls. Not gliko but e embel. Not only Berat but mainly all Albanian cities are over 2500 years old. ✌🏻
Love absolutely love your content. Not trying to be a bug here, but we “Albanians” are very patriotic and when you call Berat build from Ottoman Empire is like a slap in the face to us. David, city is 2400 year old. One of the most vicious battles against the ottomans was in that castle. So the city was not founded by the ottomans. Love your videos.

The sity is not Ottoman , Berat sity is 2400 years old , sity is founded by Albanian peaple , or better to say , sity founded by Ilirian Tribes .
In the 18th century, Berat was one of the most important Albanian cities during the Ottoman period. In the early modern era the city was the capital of the Pashalik of Berat founded by Ahmet Kurt Pasha. Berat was incorporated in the Pashalik of Yanina after Ibrahim Pasha of Berat was defeated by Ali Pasha in 1809.
@@amor8996 It was founded 2400 years ago by the Dessareti tribe under the name ofAntipatreia. Meanwhile during the Middle Ages it was known as Beligrati and it became one of the most important cities in Albania,economically and culturally. Ahmet Pasha did not found a city that was already founded, he created the Pashalik of Berat in the 1700s, which was kind of a short lived autonomous “Principality”.

I was in Albanien last month for a week and it was amazing to see so many beautiful thing... the food in every restaurant that I visited is soooo delicious.... they are very clean and pure people that I have met... I ate the beans in the video... my God, just very tasty.... hehe

I have been to this castle over 20 years ago I lived in Albania in Berat.
Food is amazing and it's non stop plate after plate ur never left hungry,the jams they make delicious, loved the okra dinners and fatsuille, all the food you tried bought back good memories. Thank you. X falemderies 👌👌.

Love your videos mate but Berat it's not an ottoman City, or founded by ottomans, it's ILLYRIAN Albanian city over 2000 years old, witch was captured by ottomans in 14 or 15 century, ottomans only build mosques in Berat and Albania to convert them to Muslims. Still today though Albanians are the only country in the world that do not care what religion you are, Muslim, Christians, Orthodox, Bektashian, Atheist, all the same no problem, because Albanian religion is Albania itself. Ottoman architecture is mainly derived from Byzantine architecture, so why don't you put in your title UNESCO Byzantine Houses instead of Ottoman? Or better yet, call them Albanian Houses!

There is a misconception even in Albanian. The saying is "një mbi një" not "një mijë e një", meaning it is "one on top of the other" not 1001. It is because the city is built on a hill, and windows of each house "sit" on top of the house below.
No no you're wrong. Berat is called in different ways; city of 1001 windows because there are many many windows in every house,or city of one above one windows because of the construction of the houses and Berat the white city because all the houses are painted in white(gelqere ).

Berat was not founded in the 15th century but it is found over 2200 years ago and the original name was Antipatrea. Another misunderstanding and it is getting lost in translation is that Berat keeps being called "the city of a thousand windows". In reality the saying is " the city is the overlapping windows". The misinterpretation comes due to the language itself. In Berat we say "the City of one-over-one windows,due to the fact that from far they look like homes stacked on top of each other. The word" one thousand(nje mije) " in Albanian sounds similar to" one-over-one(nje mbi nje) "

Read a little history of the city of Berat. The Ottoman conquest was only part of the history of this ancient city. We Albanians know our history, learn a little since you are talking about us here.
-The earliest recorded inhabitants of the city (6th century BC) were the ancient Illyrian tribe of the Dassaretii or the northernmost subgroup of the Chaonians, the Dassaretae or Dexaroi. The region was known as Dessaretis after them.[7][8] Modern Berat occupies the site of Antipatreia (Ancient Greek: Ἀντιπάτρεια), which originally was a settlement of the Dexaroi[9] and later a Macedonian stronghold in southern Illyria.[7][10] The founding date is unknown, although if Cassander is the founder it has been suggested that Antipatreia was founded after he took control of the region around 314 BC.[10] In 200 BC it was captured by the Roman legatus Lucius Apustius, who razed the walls and massacred the male population of the city.[11][12]
The town became part of the unstable frontier of the Byzantine Empire following the fall of the western Roman Empire and, along with much of the rest of the Balkan peninsula, it suffered from repeated invasions by Slavs. During the Roman and early Byzantine period, the city was known as Pulcheriopolis.
The First Bulgarian Empire under Presian I captured the town in the 9th century, and the city received the Slavic name Bel[i]grad ("White City"), Belegrada (Βελέγραδα) in Greek, which persisted throughout the medieval period, changing to Berat under Ottoman rule. The town became one of the most important towns in the Bulgarian region Kutmichevitsa. The Bulgarian governor Elemag surrendered the city to the emperor Basil II in 1018, and the city remained in Byzantine hands until the Second Bulgarian Empire retook the city in 1203 during the rule of Kaloyan. During the 13th century, it fell to Michael I Ducas, the ruler of the Despotate of Epirus.

Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos sent letters to the Albanian leaders of Berat and Durrës in 1272 asking them to abandon their alliance with Charles I of Naples, leader of the Kingdom of Albania, who had captured and incorporated it at the same period in the Kingdom of Albania.[13][14][15] However, they sent the letters to Charles as a sign of their loyalty.[16] In 1274 Michael VIII recaptured Berat and after being joined by Albanians who supported the Byzantine Empire, marched unsuccessfully against the Angevin capital of Durrës.[17] In 1280-1281 the Sicilian forces under Hugh the Red of Sully laid siege to Berat. In March 1281 a relief force from Constantinople under the command of Michael Tarchaneiotes was able to drive off the besieging Sicilian army.[18] Later in the 13th century Berat again fell under the control of the Byzantine Empire.
The fortress of Tomorr in the early 14th century is attested as Timoro(n) under Byzantine control. In 1337, the Albanian tribes which lived in the areas of Belegrita (the region of Mt. Tomorr near Berat) and Kanina rose in rebellion, and seized the fortress of Tomorr.[19][20][21] There is little detail about the rebellion in primary sources. John VI Kantakouzenos mentions that the Albanians in those areas rebelled despite the privileges which Andronikos III Palaiologos had given them a few years earlier.[20] These events marked the movement of these Albanian tribes into Epirus for the first time.[21] Andronikos led an army mainly composed of Turkish mercenaries, and defeated the Albanians, killing many and taking prisoners.[20] In 1345 (or maybe 1343) the town passed to the Serbian Empire.[22] After its dissolution in 1355 Berat came under suzerainty of its former governor, John Komnenos Asen (1345-1363), Alexander Komnenos Asen (1363-1372) and Zeta of Balša II (1372-1385). In 1385 Berat was captured by the Ottomans, before the Battle of Savra. According to some sources, the Ottomans probably remained in Berat for some time with intention to use it as foothold to capture Valona.[23] By 1396, the Albanian Muzaka family took over control of Berat which became the capital of the Principality of Berat.[24][25] In 1417 Berat became a part of the Ottoman Empire.[26] In 1455 Skanderbeg, a commander with an Albanian force of 14,000 and small number of Catalan soldiers unsuccessfully tried to capture Berat from an Ottoman force of 40,000.[27]

Berat is not an ottoman village. It existed before the ottomans came to Albania. There is no any ottoman city in Albania because they have not founded one. There are ottoman influences in Albania, but it's wrong to call any city, an ottoman city.
Berat City is a couple of thousands years old city way before the Ottomans even won Constantinople “ Istanbul “ so forget about Ottoman influences in the city as appart from the Invasions itself only Albanian architecture.
