    FYI fun facts about immigration for those reading.
    h1b --> you can apply for the master's cap which increases your chance of winning the h1b lottery. helpful for those unable to apply for green cards on your OPT
    f1 STEM OPT --> after your master's degree you can apply for a 3 year visa. this visa allows you to work in the US. if you're not born in India or china you can apply for a green card during this 3 years and immigrate easily
    eb2 --> you are eligible to apply for this immigration category. your employer must file the green card eb2 visa for you.

    Hey Rahul, you mentioned brand value of a college. What determines this and what would be a “bar” for where a college needs to stand in order to justify a masters education?

    • @RahulPandeyrkp
      @RahulPandeyrkp  Před 2 lety +4

      That probably depends on the person and the major. For a CS degree, a top 25 program is fine, but for an MBA it's only worthwhile for the top few schools.

    Hey Rahul. I'm currently an undergrad CS major. Was wondering if a masters (the 4+1 types) is worth it for the eligibility it provides for becoming an MLE. I've heard that the actual serious AI/ML work (research scientist for example) requires a PhD and a lot of MLE roles are more backend or infrastructure rather than actually making models. I know for sure I don't want a PhD as I'm not passionate about AI and academia but my main question I guess is whether you can become an MLE with just a bachelor's degree in CS?

    Given that you studied AI in your Masters and assuming that you wanted to get into AI, how easy will it be for you to get into a core AI role at big tech? And how does it compare to getting an AI job without that background?
    I ask this because as an experienced software engineer who's interested in working in AI roles, I am wondering if it makes sense to go for a Masters in AI or self study AI (by doing online courses etc)?

    • @RahulPandeyrkp
      @RahulPandeyrkp  Před 2 lety +3

      I could get back into a core AI role, but the switching cost is high. i.e. I don't know that I'd get the same level role if I interviewed now in a AI position as an IC. If I were to go that route, I'd probably try to work as a product engineer at a large tech co, and then switch internally into a more AI-focused role.

    • @DK-ox7ze
      @DK-ox7ze Před 2 lety +1

      @@RahulPandeyrkp Yeah that's what I thought too. But how common is this? Are large tech companies flexible enough for you to change roles without downgrading your level, even if I only have mediocre knowledge of AI but I am willing to learn on the job and grow?

    • @Sanyu-Tumusiime
      @Sanyu-Tumusiime Před 2 lety

      @@DK-ox7ze I'm not him, but I'll answer. Depends on the company. I know Amazon allows you to switch super easily with little to no experience.

    • @DK-ox7ze
      @DK-ox7ze Před 2 lety +2

      @@Sanyu-Tumusiime But does Amazon down level you for the switch? Say I am an L6 at Amazon working as Fullstack developer. Now I want to work in ML, but don't have any work experience in that. Just theoretical knowledge based on some self study. So if I get entry level ML work, will I be downlevelled? Or I will be given L6 ML work and expected to learn and perform on the job? Or stay as L6 but do entry level ML work?

    Could I know if the online CS master's is the same as the on-campus master's? For example, there are no written virtually learned in the degree certificate, and if you don't say, nobody knows about you took it online?

    • @RahulPandeyrkp
      @RahulPandeyrkp  Před rokem +3

      A few things:
      - I'd double check, but I think Stanford makes clear that you the online (continuing studies) degree and the "real" MS degree are different, and should be represented as such.
      - Even if they were the same, I'd advise you NOT to do an online masters unless it's paid for by your employer, or you have a clear idea of what you'll get out of it.
      A huge part of the value of a Stanford degree would be the people you meet, and that's much harder in a fully online program, and I frankly don't think the cost is justified (absent more context about your situation).
