      There was some mocap used for the extras, but the main characters were key-framed. It was both an artistic and strategic choice; Alberto prefers key-framed animation stylistically, and the work the animation team had to do to clean up the mocap out-weighed the work it would take to just key-frame from reference videos (getting my info from an interview with the animation leads)

    The name Jibaro is a term used to describe puertorrican natives. When the island was found by the conquistadors they found that the rivers were full of gold and so to obtain this, they used the Taínos os the island. They abused and murdered the natives in their efforts to obtain the stolen resources. And so this “siren” of this episode represents the gold and the Taínos that were murdered by the Spanish. I think this episode spoke well for itself, no description needed.

      @@thechildfromthevillage I definitely got the colonization critique right off the bat. But as a woman who has had many a toxic partner, I felt a universal pain by the siren being exploited by a man. Specifically after she lets her guard down in a desire to become intimate--only to be brutalized and stripped of her riches. Perhaps there are many personal feelings we can project onto a piece of art. I agree, though, that it is odd that the creator didn't see it from a colonization perspective. Perhaps it is because he is a descendent of a colonizer.

    • @thechildfromthevillage
      @thechildfromthevillage Před 2 lety +1

      @@lolitabubbles26 I’m going to have to stop you there. I get art can be viewed in many ways but this CLEARLY inspired by the colonization of the Taino. Anything can be perceived any way if we look for it. but an indigenous looking woman being chased than brutalized by a conquistador looking man for her gold in treasure that was found in a river does not sit well with me at all. Naming the soldier “jibaro” which is a term exclusive to Puerto Rico. The real jibaro in this would be the woman. Than they call her a siren and the knight the hero making her this seductress. Well as a woman can you understand the only reason people like me are surviving with Taino blood is because Spaniard like him raped our Taino women. It’s not just a critique. I wouldn’t be nearly as mad if he would give even a bit of recognition to what really inspired it when it’s clear as day to anyone who knows about the Taino and the original story of why they were colonized

    • @mjhobo5520
      @mjhobo5520 Před rokem

      I’m not so sure this has anything to do with colonisation, the forest seems to be very European as does the birds and the weather. The imagery also borrows heavily from the 18th century romantic paintings from Europe, right down to the gold and silver leaf, in many ways it’s not even clear it’s based in our universe, as there wasn’t a crucifix in sight, and the priests have robes that look more Eastern Orthodox than Spanish in inspiration.
      As for the interpretation that the conquistador was pursuing the siren for her gold, it’s arguably more likely that he is simply a knight from a romantic fairy tale in full plate, not a conquistador from history. There were some knights dressed in a slightly more conquistador style of armour, but not definitively so, much like the siren, and the priests, the armour seems to draw inspiration from several eras and cultures.
      Also, you seem to ignore the siren attacked the company first, using her song and her dance to drive the knights and priests mad with desire, until they either killed each other in a mad jealous lust, or drowned trying to reach her first. Seeing this sirens magic and what it did to his friends caused the knight to flee in panic from her, he certainly didn’t seem to be interested in returning, at least not until she pursued him, apparently because his resistance to her deadly call aroused her. It was only after she came to him in his sleep, and seduced him with dance when he woke that her magic started to work and his obsession with her golden scales overcame his terror.
      It’s easy in this modern world to frame everything as part of the big ticket arguments, of which colonisation and patriarchal sexual aggression are two of the biggest, but sometimes it’s ok just to let great art dwell in the small and uncomfortable spaces, where there is no clear line between good and bad, let the art have the room it needs to breath and exist on its own merits.
      Lastly the producer himself has talked about how the story of siren and the knight represent the tragedy of a toxic relationship, and how he has drawn in parts of his own toxic behaviour in relationships, as both the knight and the siren, I suspect we would be better served to treat his assessment the primary interpretation.

    • @BallyBoy95
      @BallyBoy95 Před rokem

      @@thechildfromthevillage Gonna go out on a limb here, and say, it was deliberately speaking to all three of those points of view:
      -Colonisation aspect is as clear as day.
      -The woman being violently stripped of her jewels, after seductively dancing on front of the knight - clearly highlighting exploitation.
      -The director's own personal relationships - how their goals do not align - and the heavy emphasis of temptation.
      It is no one factor that is being highlighted here, but all three.
      What Spain did to the Taino, is beyond fucked up. That goes w/o saying. Pretty sure he was deliberately nose-and-cheek with the Spain-Taino parallel, but because he's the descendent of Spaniards, and is a rich writer, he doesn't care too much about that element. He's moreso focussed on how this parallels with his own personal relationships.

      She’s a siren. In mythology Sirens lure men to their deaths with the sound of their voice.

    Dude, this is not a 100% CG short. For some reason the interviewer thinks that, and Alberto just doesn't bother to correct him. If that were me as Alberto, I wouldn't randomly take credit for a jump forward in CGI bigger than every major player in the world for a 15 minute short film. Alberto, just own up that it was well done, but very clearly a well done hybrid of live action and CG accents. Come on now.

      Exactly. Alberto looked like he didn't want to be doing the interview either. I'm getting the vibe that he's just required to do it, but has a ton of other shit he's gotta take care of instead so he doesn't really care about the questions.

    TO MR. ALBERTO MIELGO:
    STICK TO YOUR SPAIN, SPANISH TRADITIONS OF "ZARZUELAS", ETC., AND LEAVE THE PEOPLE OF THE CARIBBEAN'S CULTURES, LEYENDS, TRADITIONS ALONE - ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE, THE "JIBAROS" OF THE MOUNTAINEOUS REGIONS OF PUERTO RICO - UNTIL YOU LEARN THE TRUE MEANING OF THE WORD "JIBARO".
    AND PLEASE PRONOUNCE THE WORD CORRECTLY, TOO!!!

    Learning that this had nothing to do with the Taino actually is actually upsetting. The woman’s feature and face paint look Taino. And the gold in the river again reminiscent of Taino and the Spaniard looking people trying to take it and kill her again. Taino. But somehow he said it’s about a toxic mother relationship. It’s upsetting because it’s clearly inspired by the story of what happened to the taino whether or not it’s about it is a different story. And the guy is Spanish from Spain. It’s borderline disrespectful. Look up taino women and you’ll see the red and blue face paint with similar features and skin color. The story of taino is how we were butchered for our gold they try to say no there was no gold but that’s a lie the Americas were filled with gold why do you think they still find ship wreaks till this day around the Caribbean with gold coins. It’s disrespectful that the woman clearly looks taino and the men clearly look like conquistadors and the creator is from Spain. That’s corny and I usually don’t care about this shit like I don’t even care if anyone cosplays as an indigenous person I don’t see it as disrespectful but to create an entire story that is reminiscent of what your country did to an indigenous group and have the audacity to call it “jibaro” and come out and say “it’s about a toxic mother” is OD corny

    Honestly didn’t really like it for the lack of context and the exaggerated movements and at times it seemed super unrealistic and the characters looked weird. Idk tho just my opinion

    I really wish she didnt have legs, a creature living in the water and walking is really unnatural. It would be better if she had large fins or a mermaid’s tail. Also the ending, if the blood water had healing properties, why did the guy go mad before the siren started singing. He acts more like he was poisoned and wants to vomit the blood out. A few logical bugs. And the siren’s “naked” body looks too much like a body suite made of fabric, layered with different materials too. The more I watch it, the more bugs I’m noticing.
