  • I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Dimir Surgical Extraction Mill, a brew from Patreon subscriber Elijah. This deck uses powerful Mill spells like Archive Trap to attack the opponent's deck directly. Since many Legacy decks use the graveyard, Surgical Extraction makes sense to protect yourself or to take key cards out of the opponent's deck. The extra twist is Mind Funeral! If you mill or Wasteland an important land from their deck, you can surgical that, which could color screw them while also reducing the lands to hit for bigger Mind Funerals! Fractured sanity is the triple blue spell you were thinking of.
    Ponder would be infinitely better. Running preordain has done wonders since it has been unbanned. Visions always was a liability for mill in a lot of respects.
    Extirpate could be better than surgical. Especially with split second.
    Would running leyline of the void or splash white for rest in peace be better to make this more viable and give it a solid chance against the graveyard shenanigans of legacy? I tried to make mill work years ago before the printing of a lot of the mill staples we have nowadays. Mine was trying to shove mill in with LOTV and Energy Field, along with painter combo.

Just full control, draw cards, 1 for 1's, and eventually we find the 2 card combo to mill out? Or maybe a back to basics JTMS shell? Because you KNOW they had absolutely nothing and there is nothing to fear, and then they draw about as hot as the sun every to every other draw step and you are FUMING that if they drew them in the opposite order that the games would be miles different.

  • @chillywings
    @chillywings Před 3 měsíci +1

    Okay hear me out. I agree with you that mind funeral is bad. Surgicalling lands doesn't make sense. What would be better that you can slot right in it's place? Unmoored ego. More expensive than surgical, but there's no conditions. You just name the card. No pesky 'has to be in the graveyard already' requirement. Game 3 against lands is a great example of this. If opp is running endurance, emrakrul, or anything else that hoses you, you can just rip it out at any time. Or just their biggest threat. You can argue it should be in the sideboard, but if you're already running 4 surgicals then why not. Having 8 extraction effects could be enough to strip the opp of win cons. And you mentioned at the end the possibility of leaning into a control strategy.. would certainly work well with that. Basically a preemptive counter once you start getting hooks in

    I never see those matchups except when you play this. SO weird. Mill is much better in games like Heartstone clones, because if you can pull ahead on resources, or your opponent is draw heavy (which is cheap there), you can use symetrical card draw to make them mill (If you draw a card when you have 7 cards in hand, that card is exiled), a lot of decks rely on rare one-ofs (Legendary cards) that you have a 1 in 25 chance to hit with every card milled, if you are fast enough they either can't put creatures into play, or the ones that they do play do nothing/fill board slots that your Mill creatures can attack, etc. Magic is just not a game where you can mill reliably. I'm saying this as someone who only played Yu-Gi-Oh! and a hearthstone close called Undercards. The only deck I published for that one was a Mill Stall deck that abused "spend all your resource each turn) bonuses and discounts to fill the board with overstats, removal on legs, and milled the opponent out as a win condition (because I had more bodies than the maximum amount of removal they could play, but not enough to get them to 0). The downside is that Mill doesn't kill them at once, just deals "Times you drew from an empty deck" in damage, including this one.

    • @asw654
      @asw654 Před 3 měsíci

      More importantly, disruption is almost non-existent in Hearthstone.
      In MTG, other players can pyroblast your crabs or tasha's/mind funerals.
      Also, tbh, those kinds of matchups are not that rare. They're almost as common as quotes I hear like, "Why do I always run into Endurance/Echo/Yorion/etc when I play my mill?"

    Honestly, if we’re playing Legacy Mill then why aren’t we playing 4x Brain Freeze? With all the free spells and one CMC spells it’s very easy to enable a Freeze for 9. And then there’s double Brain Freeze turns. Finally, we can just blow out opposing storm decks with the right timing.

    With Painter and Helm combos already established as meta decks, I fail to see why you'd opt to go for a more controlling build with regular mill (As those decks will guarantee a deck-out when they go off). Rather, the deck does need more ways to mill the opponent (Though should have access to 4 Force and 4 Drown as forms of interaction).
    The fundamental flaw of this deck really does boil down to a matter of numbers.
    1. Mind Funeral is only good when expecting low land metas (Or something like Beltcher or Manaless Dredge). Say you play it on turn 3 against an opponent who has a 17 land deck (With 3 already in play/hand), you still expect to see a land every ~3.5 cards. So on average, you are only expecting 14 cards (And taking out 4 lands from the opponent's deck is likely to be a boon after their 3rd land drop).
    2. Tasha's is only good in low CMC metas (Ones that don't run Beans, Scion of Draco or Reanimator targets). Right now, it's better off being relegated to the sideboard (If played at all) if you are expecting a lot land based decks. If the average CMC of a deck is 1.5, you are only expected to hit 14 cards. It also ends up being a nonbo with Visions of Beyond and Drown.
    3. Fractured Sanity is the best option for mill as it's on rate all of the time, while also having the ability to be cycled (Which can definitely come in handy against Brainstorm/Ponder stacking).

    I'm truly flabbergasted you're not running Leyline of the Void in the 75. In modern you can easily get away with Surgical Extraction and maybe a couple Extirpates, but in legacy there's just way too many decks that have way too many cards in their deck that hold high value in the bin too.
    Also Visions of Beyond seems like a pretty bad card for legacy. There seemed to be so few times when you were actually able to get the 3 draw, with all the manipulation available through Flashbacks, Uro, Echo of Aeons, etc. just saying **no** to having a graveyard. Probably just better off swapping out for some Ponders

    Your opponent is absolutely a bad person for opening hand with 4 LEDs and playing a Bowmasters combo deck.
    Also it's wild that you have to choose a target in a graveyard, and MTGO doesn't actually target it as part of the spell effect. That's a huge issue with the game UI, not your fault.

    Shouldn't this deck be running Ghost Quarter as a way to force the opponent to search for Archive Trap?

    This attacking lands thing was never going to work. Not even possibly. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver would give game against midrange and Bowmasters strategies. Eventually, you can reanimate bigger things (like a milled Grief or even an Atraxa). And if they are attacking Ashiok, you are stalling for the mill spells to work. The list should have been reworked before you ran it.
