Vintage Thrift Flip - Turning a 1980s Dress into a 1940s Suit

- I used to thrift flip all the time when I was first learning to sew. Fabric is expensive and I didn't want to waste that money if I messed up. I stopped though when I got better because it is a lot more work sometimes than just starting from scratch. While at a thrift store a while ago I came across this wonderfully green vintage1980s dress and I couldn't resist thinking about all the wonderful thing I could do with it so I bought it. I'm not going to lie, it was a struggle but I love how it turned out. Since finishing this 1940s style suit has become a staple in my daily wardrobe. I think I might add vintage refashions into my sewing plans more often!

I live for 40's suits. TheY'rE SO cUTe!!!
I’m seeing Agent Carter kicking ass in this suit
I love green, it's my favorite color, emerald green especially, but all shades of green are great. You created something totally unique. Pure talent. The outdoor cinematography was fabulous, it really did look like a little vintage French movie. :) Hugs from Cali.
I think you doubt yourself way too much! This outfit is gorgeous. Well done!
I love how this turned out!!!! And it's green!!!! My favorite colour!
You are so clever! I could never have done that in a million years. I would've kept the 80s dress as it is, and found a seamstress to have added shoulder pads and taken the waist in with darts.
That turned out great. You did a good job on it.
Lovely!❤
That turned out so cute.
LOVE the color! The lines of the skirt is truly fabulous. I see your darling Samantha. Also crushing on your pattern weights.
I think this is the kind of thing I would like to do as I thrift a lot. I dont know who I am kidding...I am jealous of that suit...I would never find a dress big enough to do that..
I am just a whisker off six foot tall!
That is a lovely transformation. Well done.

What a remarkable transformation!
The suit is adorable.
This turned out beautifully! And your right about doing thrift flips. They are harder for so many reasons.
This came out wonderfully!
Beautiful job! The trick to pull apart sewn garments is to get yourself a small clip scissor and clip every 3rd-4th stitch..it loosens the threads and allows you to pull the garment apart.
Beautiful, Sam. I love it and love your process. Thank-you for sharing.
More 1940s 1949, I’d love to see more specific styles from 1944 to 49.
Also, you may have some videos are ready I don’t know but I’m also interested in the sexier 1930s late 1930s, 1938-1939 if you would! 🎉
Whoa...total Greer Garson vibes at the reveal. Great job!
The finished garment looks amazing on you! Great thrift flip. As far as I know we don't have thrift stores like yours in Germany. Well I don't know any. And the "Second Hand" garments here are ridiculously pricy. But I'd love the idea of thrifting and thrift flipping . Looking forward to seeing all of you videos the next days and subscribed to your channel of course.
Turned out so nice! ❤
Turned out super cute! I love the color..
“ONLY PAOLO” 😂🤣😭
Also, your beret and bow tie game is SO STRONG
What is this sorcery? It came out beautifully! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Idk how CZcams knew I wanted to watch a 1940s inspired thrift flip but it did! The suit turned out so good! Thrift flips can be so frustrating but it's so in line with make do and mend philosophy that I bet it's very rewarding.
Also, you match the mannequin head at the end which is fun haha.
Fabulous!
Always wanted a 40s suit & love the color. Always see similarities bet 80s & 40s clothes too
Hat fabric needs to be rescued! Yes I heard from other people that sold and flip vintage things that a lot of times it’s a little bit extra work to try to rework everything and take it apart but sometimes the fabric is really what’s worth it because nowadays the fabric stores have really expensive fabric and they don’t even have high quality war and sometimes you’ll find some patterns and details. 👗
Yeah, my husband said the same thing I try to find dresses and he said sometimes it’s just easier to start fresh but then you see a fabric and it’s really gives you the real Vintage vibes.
Soooooooo cute!
Cool video
Great job! I too love that suit on you. Hope you feel the struggle was worth it.
12:12 💃🏼 the best… feeling after wracking your brain 🧠 and thinking; aww you look like a French film. What’s romantic man! ❤❤
What a wonderful transformation! I have a couple of 80s dresses in my alteration pile that have been waiting for inspiration to strike, but I hadn't considered a 40s bolero suit. That might be just the ticket.
It’s not hard but it can be work. I’m finishing Lynda Maynard’s tailoring class and she has a ready to wear jacket class later this winter (online). Kenneth D King is another wonderful teacher and he has a shawl jacket class running right now..even if you never make a tailored jacket after the classes, it’s worth it. It’s improved my sewing.
So cute! The skirt shape is so flattering
This is SUCH a brilliant project and it turned out beautifully! I adore your style and your honesty 😁 I'm definitely doing this next time I find an 80s dress. Normally I just turn them into 20s dresses but this is fetchh
love this!
More videos! You don’t need to do your other responsibilities!
Cute
What a suit! It turned out so beautiful on you. Just stumbled over your channel today and I have liked the two videos I have seen so far, hope the algoritm finds you so more people can enjoy you and your creativity.
