Earlier in Spring we planted 2 branches of Royal Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa) that, at the time, were only 17" above the ground.
Now one is over 10 feet tall! The other, however, is not well. In fact, it is dead.
But the one that is growing has 2 low branches that we want to cut off anyhow, so perhaps we can still put a tree where we want it.
But how should we do it? Wait until the dormant seasons - or try to spout roots out of one of the branches now?
What do you think?

I ordered one online to grow here. It was a few inches tall when I planted it. The first year it only grew about 6 inches. The following spring I cut it down to ground level, and that year it grew 8 feet. Mine never flowered until it was about 8 years old, but it always flowers only on the very top branches, where I can't even see it. Mine is now probably at about 30 feet or so, and I only know it flowered after the flowers fall off and I find them on the ground. But it gives great shade in the summer, which is the reason I got it. Mine has never given off any suckers from the roots as mentioned in another comment.
Maybe some specific variety that does that, or a nutrient issue? Just brainstorming.
No idea what the issue is. It's usually the last tree to put on leaves in the spring and the first one to drop them at the end of summer. The leaves are HUGE.
Jared, good to see you! I would wait until fall. With the mild winter we have down here, I would think you could root it in late fall. You might even try making several cuttings from each branch, scar up the bottom, dip them in a rooting compound of some sort, and stick em in some dirt/sand mix. Like you said, you know you will have more chances later at the rate that thing grows!
Happy to be back. Summer break from CZcams is nice, but it is time to get back into the game.
First, scar the branch with a few scratches of a razor. Then, wrap the branch with a big wad of wet peat moss and then plastic until it roots (may take a month). Then cut it off and plant it. Water heavily.
I've been thinking that "air layering" was going to be my most sure-fire approach.
J&J Acres I forgot what it was called. Air layering. Yep.
I agree
on the green growing wood.
then we get to see how it works.
just wonder about mold and I think a touch of root hormone on the scar
would expedite formation.

There is another Tree which grows like this or little slower than this? main purpose to get Timber.
I want to Plant 2 different Trees in 1 Acre; Harvest them within 4-5 years
I’m curious how tall this tree is now?
I've read it gets about 20 -40 ft in the first 5 years maxing out at optimum potential at 80
If you trim it right and then the perfect growing conditions it will grow about 20 feet a year they use the word An 18 to 24 inches at the base when fully grown they use the word to make furniture
Hello, I'm new to seeing this. I read some of the replies but not all. I recommend that it be cut close to a bud at the 45° angle and the dip it into some cinnamon and then some honey.
I got the info individually from several videos. I tried it on another plant that had gotten root rot but hadn't been effected in the upper growth yet and it worked. Luck to you!
Thank you for your suggestion.
My understanding is that you collect cuttings in fall for spring grafting of fruit trees. Also you wait for fall for a tree to go dormant to dig it up for transplant. However, if you want to propagate from a cutting you need to do it about now wgile it is active to grow new roots. Be sure and use rooting hormone and keep the soil it is in moist. Furthermore you may need to trim up some leaves as the larger the leaf surface area the mure moisture that is lost through the leaf. You would want to see a few videos on propegation if this is your first time.
It is just curious that when we bought these what we received was a dormant branch. Figured I could do it the same way. Could be wrong.
I agree with Jack Frost, and would add that I've had luck propagating trees from cuttings by keeping a clear plastic bag tented over the whole pot to keep the humidity high. There's a balancing act between wanting to keep leaves for immediate energy production, and not wanting to keep leaves because they will make the cutting dry out. Tenting with a bag helps keep the cutting from losing too much moisture while it establishes a new root system. Just check it periodically to make sure it's not growing mold.
If I had to guess, I would say that Fast Growing Trees sent you a dormant branch for this very reason. They have to cut and store cuttings, and they may not know how long it will be before they sell a cutting. Then they have to transport them to the buyer. If they cut actively growing branches, they would be more likely to use up all of their energy and/or dry out before they're planted. Cutting dormant wood would solve those problems for them. But since you don't have to store your cuttings if you don't want to, I think you'll have better luck getting actively growing wood to root.

Search "air layering" or "air rooting" for a great option for your royal empress limb quandary. I think you'll like that option.
😉👍
I absolutely love this tree would love more updates
I am sure that it will get another video or two throughout the year.
I read on gardenguides that you can propagate by airlayering which is what I would do. I would go for the lowest branch after it puts on roots from airlayering first but not sure about the timing. Airlayering should be done when plants are actively growing instead of dormant but not sure best time to transplant for your area.If you do airlayer, you can pot it up in a large pot for overwintering in a warm place. Good luck man.
Yes, the airlayering is likely what we will try to do.
We need an update on how big it is now.
Nice video. So sorry the memorial planting didn't work out. Personally I prefer to grow from root cuttings. Scratch gently about a foot away from the trunk and find some surface roots - they run almost horizontally. Find one at least 1/4" thick - thicker is better. Cut it cleanly and pull as much as you can from the ground. Cut it into 4" lengths, remembering which end faced the trunk. Each of these will grow into a tree (with very low mortality rates), much faster than seedlings. It's basically suckers, but growing in a different place.
Thanks for the idea!
I took a root and cut it at the trunk put it in a pot with dirt and this year I have leaves starting and the plant is doing fine.
Hey Jared! Good to see you! Been missing you guys. :) Hope to see more of you before too long.
Thanks for tuning back in :-)
Welcome back!
Thanks :-)
In the center of the tree there is a hollow area, like a pipe, and if frost gets in there it will kill the tree. I would wait until your last frost of the spring and then do your cutting.
That is interesting, I don't remember seeing that hollow spot on the cuttings we received.
Air layer one of them. Google it, it's easy to do and if it doesn't work you still have the other one.
I would try air layering the lower branch because that branch will have to be pruned off eventually anyway. Use willow water or rooting hormone to encourage rooting. If you get good rooting them cut the air layered branch off the tree and plant it.
one of each cut bottom one and plant it out now, higher one you can save and air layer or plant out early next spring.
Very expensive you say? Those things literally grow everywhere around where I live. I constantly see those towering plants with huge elephant ear leaves
Haven't seen you around in a while. Jimmy Carter use to grow these trees.
Oh, really?
From what I've heard, and it won't hurt to try, the one that didn't make it you chop it down so it's even with the ground and leave it for the winter. Sorry it was the memorial tree that didn't make.
True, maybe the roots are still there - who knows.
I would propagate this one right now. You could try propagating from either cuttings or air layering.
Oh! You might also hop on a gardening forum and see if anyone would be willing to trade you some of their Paulownia cuttings for something you have.
I would probably start cuttings in pots right now (or fabric grow bags for good root development,) and keep them in a greenhouse or sheltered area over the winter so they get as much time to grow roots as possible. Then I would plant them out in the spring.
how does it handle high winds especially in the south ?
will it survive a hurricane or a tornado the same way in oak tree does?
The Japanese and the Chinese recomment the "tecnical cut" each spring, the first 2 grow-seasons. This is to make the roots strong enough to produce a really straight and high stem trunk from the beginning.
Best regards from CEO / Paulownia Denmark
What`s a `Tecnical cut`. I`m about to plant my first of these and have no experience.
Would like to see an update on the tree
Judging by the looks of the sparse grass around the memorial planting, I would guess it has very wet to standing water in the spring/early summer.
I just read they that they don’t tolerate wet soil.
On the other hand, I could have sworn I saw a picture of one growing at the edge of a pond. 🤔
Well, it’s something to look into anyway.
Try Air Layering as Bruce Rodriguez suggested.
Do they use these for timber? What's the purpose of planting this particular type of tree?
Awesome channel.
Thank you Barry!
I'm not sure, but I believe this is what I have growing I'm my yard. I live on the AR/Mo state line...
They were there when I moved there, and I had no idea what they were, but I noticed a neighbor had some next to her house, so I stopped and asked if she knew what they were. Unfortunately she didn't, but she told me her husband cut them down every year, and they always grow back.
So... I tried it with mine, and sure enough they grew back insanely fast and sprouted out new leaves that were gigantic!
So now, I cut them down every year and let them grow back. They make a great privacy screen with the huge leaves. If I can figure out exactly what mine are, I'd love to learn how to transplant them as well. They produce seed pods? I figured by way of nature that some of the seeds would sprout, but all the new growth just comes from the stumps of the previous trees.
I read where someone said they flower? I've been at my place for 9 years and never saw them produce any flowers.
If it is the same plant, then yes, they flower. And yes, they produce seeds. However, this particular variety is a hybrid and the seeds are sterile. Can only be grown from cuttings.
These things volunteer in my garden sometimes I *think*. Looks the same. I yank them but, maybe I'll transplant them next time.
Old thread but you can razor cut a leaf diagonally at the node, put it in water on a windowsill. It will root. I have 2 trees in the ground, and a friend has 2 more from cloning leaves. My best tree grew 20 feet in one season in Southern Illinois.
Awesome, thanks!
Jared, I would try one now and one in the fall.
I planet just a seed and overnight there was a tree. It grew so tall and went all the way into the clouds. I climb to the very top of it and there’s a giant house I have not knocked on the door yet I feel very small up here.
Shut up, Jack!
Have you done any updates for this tree?
Cut a half branch with sharp knife and then put a little cocopeat almost wet and wraped also tie up with plastic bag for coverl the wet cocopeat wait around 24-45 days.you would be see the root came up.
Airlayering both is a good idea.
A guide to starting cuttings:
SNIP ‘EM
STRIP ‘EM
DIP ‘EM
STICK ‘EM
Get the roots started on the tree outer layer of bark leaving the in her Lair of dark put some soil on it with starter rocker soil in a dark coating squid thinks it's ground and it grows roots in the cut it off and print it
Do a video on the plant that didn't make it. I'd like to see how the roots look to see if it may have been the soil conditions are the cause. Such causes may have been too fast draining or not enough? Maybe there is root rot? Or, maybe your cutting was malnourished/overnourished? Maybe it's none of these. Either way, it would still be interesting to see.
That would have been a great idea, but now it is far too late to see any results. Sorry.
when the tree starts budding at the first of the year take the budding branches and put the in a cup with water in a window to get sun lite I have roots growing on the one I have at the window
Thanks
I'd cut the outer layer of bark and stick it in a pot while still attached to the tree, then wait around 2 months (or more depending on the type of plant). That's the way I do must of my shrubs, just hang a pot on/inside the plant.
I love this tree pls uploaded more videos as like tree
There's guys often come back after dying off! Ours had died back and regrew
Can you soil grow, or air grow some sucker rootings, and then cut down ? Rootone or root grower ?
John Lord they do grow wild here in Clayton, Alabama. Several different places in town and out in the woods. Have two now in buckets at my home, can't decide where to plant them for my bees. Free for the digging when dormant.
I can find the update video.
Did you post one?
Hello sir, question for you, please where or which site did you order or bought the empress tree seedlings or the seeds, thanks you..!
Any update? I’m hoping at least a couple of the 13 that I transplanted survive. They’re not looking but, but not completely dead yet
Can it be tapped for sap like Maple and Birch?
Cuttings in the mail might be expensive but seeds are cheap
And after all it is the fastest growing tree you won't have to wait long for a good size
But, you see, this tree produces sterile seeds - they cannot germinate a new plant. So...
Hello sir how many meter high altitude we can grow
Air-lay and plant in the Fall.
What are Empress Trees good for? Why are they valuable?
Very easy to grow from seed. Scatter seed on TOP of moist to wet compost DO NOT COVER WITH SOIL !!!!!! And keep moist and they will grow easily if kept warm
Is it deer resistant?
These are beautiful when grown. But they look weak when young. Will a strong wind blow them over?
Ours has gone through some strong storms - still standing!
Just wait. They will throw up suckers from the roots. Separate it from the mother plant with a sharp shovel and move it where you want it to grow.
this looks like the best sure deal
Well, thing is, I will remove these branches anyway, so figured I could put them to use.
Try air layering if you haven't had any luck. It's easy and you can keep doing it with any branches you want to prune. If you have no use for it, try selling air layered branches.
yeah, that was a big part of the point, and my vote would be in this situation to try both ideas, you will learn more , for future farming benefits
We just bought two plants today...about 12-13 inches tall...these were "root" stock from his large tree...he said that was the best way to take cuttings...do it when it's dormant in winter...
Does it highly scented or just light fragrance. . ?
Well we were lucky, our tree started out growing from the mulch put in late last summer, was about 3 ft, then this year it took off, taller than our house. We never planted it , think it came from mulch put down.
If it is close to your house will it damage it?
You could try air layering it!
That would be fun to try!
I'd try air layering
I started these from seeds, from ebay, yes from China, started in my greenhouse in Nov, they are now 2 feet tall, everyone grew, the seeds were great, even thought people tell me don't order seeds from China, they won't grow, well believe me they do, I am growing all types in my greenhouse and they are very inexpensive.
Excellent, I hope you are able to put those plants to good use!
Ormigas seguro y plantalas con una planta de ruda...al lado saludos exito..
Is there an update on this?
First, it's considered an invasive non native from Asia. With that said, try putting some soil around the juncture and plastic bag around it. Air graft. Roots should grow, then you could cut that branch free.
Hey. It looks like this video is the number one to suggest my Empress Tree video. Cool!
Came to youtube to see what these huge plants growing on my property were. Was told it was a "Princess tree" and here I am. So why would anyone plant these their property? Whats the benefit?
Well, how did it work out? Did you plant the cutting?
Took a cutting, put it in the ground... forgot to water it :-(
Use clonex Hormone, cut the branch before the winter , than she has time to recover and build the routs.
I have 6 of them all are clone .
You can make probably make 10 Colne good luck!
I you could find a small root, I would plant it in a pot I did this last year and I now have a small tree growing. this is the only way I know of growing another tree.
This is the best way.
Do these grow wild around the South east? There is a plant very similar to that, that has taken over my grandmothers raised beds.
Not to my knowledge, but there are invasive varieties that are not sterile like ours, so perhaps there are.
I should have worded that a little different. I know the sterile version won't spread. I'm going to research this tree more and see if that's what is growing at Grandma's. Thank you for this video because I had no idea where to even starting identifying this plant/tree.
Awesome, I hope it helps!
Turkey Creek Homestead, in oregon they are considered invasive also since they have winged seeds that blow far and wide ending up any/every where, and not native here... im just learning about and have an interest in them .. cool plant imo
alaysia kaye butler Even thogh they make millions of seeds with high germination ratio, its a challenge to grow this tree from seeds. It is the fastest growing tree in the world but when it first come from seed ,its actually verry slow grower and verry sensitive .I think its almost impossible to find one paulownia that growed from a seed in the whoole american continent.Ive planted 5 times paulownia seeds this year,in total more than 25000 seeds and finally, after manny failures i managed to get 10 small seedlings. It can spread from root shots but from seeds there is no concern about becomming invasive.
Airlayer the branches.
I would like to know what type of seed is allocated for wood production and the distance between drilling and thanks
I do not know what sort of distances the trees would be planted at in order to harvest them for lumber. Sorry.
thank you for replying
If you grow a tree from seed, is it the second year that they have their first massive growth spurt? Anyone? I'm just curious because I've seen & read that these trees take a long time to grow from seed.
I picked up a seed pod, brought it home, threw it in a drawer for I don't remember how long. Finally the seeds were spilling out of the envelope I put the pod in, so I tossed some into a pot of soil on my windowsill. In a very short time they were growing like grass. I chose only one seedling, and I would say that in about 3-4 months, it's about 2-3 inches tall. It's in a pot with a calla lily on my windowsill indoors. I had another pot of bare soil and tried again about a month ago- again they grew like grass, but very crowded. A couple of days ago I pricked out the seedlings rather carelessly, since I had so many and wasn't worried about losing some, and I put them about an inch apart in a couple of plastic containers that mushrooms come in at the supermarket. They seem fine; only lost a few, but the rest seem to be perfectly happy and not withered or anything from being transplanted.
I'm finding them extremely easy to grow from seed and pretty quick growing. If I wanted to be serious about it, I could probably grow a thousand trees from the seeds I've got in the junk drawer, and without much trouble, as they are really quick to germinate, sprout and establish themselves.
It’s odd to me how much the leaves change shape as they’re growing… I thought I had gotten mulberry transplants at first but some art starting to look like real paulownia’s
how to remove these I have them invest my whole garden
is it easy to grow them from seeds?
Yes, they are traditionally seen as an invasive plant due to the amount of seeds they produce and how readily they sprout - however this variety produces sterile seeds, so as not to cause an ecological disaster.
@@JandjacresNet ?? I know the shear amount of seeds produced is not disputed, but most info. I've seen says that they are generally very unlikely to germinate in the natural environment.
air layer the branches
I would do "Air layer"....
I would have airlayered it right then!
I should have too.
Air layering is your solution
I have one growing right up against my house 🤨 so sad.
My sweetie said take cuttings now. plant in ground and keep well watered though fall.
I love my empress trees! If you haven't seen my videos, I would love you to check them out.
how does a royal empress tree flower. they always show it with purple flowers all over it but I'm questioning if that is truly what it looks like.
bruce wayne the pics are pretty accurate. I have a huge tree full of flowers every year. Best shade tree ever too because the leaves are gigantic!
The mature tree flowers are shocking beautifull.
2021??? How tall?
Hey, I got a front lawn that is lifted from the street about 3 feet and it's like a L shape, I want to plant a tree there but I'm afraid its going to hit the foundation of my house or the roots will grow out of the side. It's like 7 ft at the base of the L shape and like 40~ feet going up it, do you reccomend a tree that could grow there and not interrupt my foundation to my house? Any low root trees or anything like that?
How much sun does the area get? Other than taking up space what do you want to get out of this tree (shade, etc.)? Do you have any homeowners association restrictions?
No restrictions and the area is hit by the sun 24/7. I live in Washington so right now It's rather warm, 90~ but goes down to high 60s at night. I don't have a preference of what I get out of the tree, the yard just looks bland and want to spice is up.
By 24/7 I just mean when there is sun it is always hitting that area.
Air root it now, cut in fall.
Just cut the sides of the bottom of the tree to make it grow faster.
Now
To-the-point. Thanks!
Buy 100 seeds off Amazon for 4.99
Hello from Houston. ...you can try air layering. .. there are many videos on CZcams but here's one that's easy to follow. ...it shouldn't take long before you're able to clone your tree. .... link to video
czcams.com/video/XBLE9IfGemo/video.html
good luck
woof
I bought the Royal Empress seeds and none of them sprouted.
Well this one is sterile, so the seeds from it would be no good. www.fast-growing-trees.com/Royal-Empress-Tree.htm
I also have been wanting to buy seeds online, on the offer up app or something. All the reviews are negative though! Any suggestions how I can get some seeds? Thank you!
If it is NOT native to your area. Do NOT plant it
I'm going to plant them randomly all over my county, and all along the river that is near us, just so the seeds float downstream. :)
Cut it down and burn it quickly. This is at the top of the list of invasive plants and will continue to spread and shade out anything underneath it.
cut it
These trees are a pestilence and an invasive species. You will regret planting them. Once they get foothold you will not be able to eradicate them. I am constantly cutting them.
Actually, these trees are from a type whose seeds are not fertile. Should any spread by the roots, well, we'll be cutting the grass anyhow.
Invasive
You do realize it has the same protein content as alfalfa right? That’s a blessing to have popping up
How about a fucking real answer
Not sure how a picture of the plant and how tall it is doesn't answer the question.
Invasive. It’s irresponsible to plant these trees!
