Elgato have released a new microphone - the Elgato Wave DX. This is their first Dynamic microphone and still targets a VERY aggressive budget price point of $100. I think this is the new champion of budget mics and will be for quite a while.

Sold my Shure SM7B and ordered this one immediately. $400 dynamic microphone gave me everything I could have wanted but it was still a $400 microphone that I barely got any use out of beyond streaming and chatting with friends.
With this microphone I will have a desk setup that's almost completely sponsored by Elgato products.
Great overview, as always. I was using the AT2040 as the back-up for my SM7B, but this is definitely replacing it; Sounds fantastic!
Wasn’t expecting an XLR microphone, and I *certainly* wasn’t expecting it to come in at such a good price point, but wow! Elgato genuinely knocking it out of the park with this one. The $100 and below price range was already pretty robust, but this might just be a new gold standard for budget microphones.
Another Quality video. Thanks Epos Vox!
At last a good upgrade to my q2u!. TY!
Very cool option for the price point! Awesome review as always!
I’ve had my Q2U for a year and it’s been stellar. This may be my 1b recommendation if they have a XLR interface now. That’s awesome.
The logo is removable and you can switch sides to where the mount goes. Then put the logo back to the side the mount came off of.
I appreciate how, at the very least, it doesn't look like an SM7B clone.
To be honest, I was kinda bummed that this was an XLR mic when I first heard about it (I already use a Shure SM57 now and love it). I was hoping Elgato would've made a USB mic like the Wave, but Dynamic. Since this one is called the Wave DX, though, I wonder if we'll get a Wave D USB version in the future.
Hey man, first time Ive commented - I think lol - are you planning on doing a review of the blue (logitech) sona? Im really interested in the built in lifter... using a pod mic with my go xlr I find I really have to put the gain up...
Thanks for the review. I'll definitely be saving a few bucks (100, lol) on this one. Been looking for a good but cheap dynamic mic.
Holy molly, this microphone sound awesome
my immediate reaction. Definitely copping one to replace my 2012 blue yeti!
How does it compare in like build strength or quality to the Shure SM58? seems like priced to compete with that as well.
How does this mic compare to the Videomic GO II? In the ratio of peformance to price RODE seems to be greater choice.
I have a Blue Ember and want to upgrade to this 👀
Any suggestions 🤔 on a shotgun mic .. would that help me when I'm doing my dj streams.... I have my speakers playing out the music im mixing
Elgato stuff are very good. I liked their usb mics and they sounded pretty good. My go to mic will always be the SM7B though.
it's a great alternative to the sm7b and probably the one i will pick for hsl's new music studio.
if you had to choose between the elgato software and the beacn software, in terms of practicality and options, what will you choose? I wanted to wait for beacn to come to EU cause their software is great and I really like every post-processing they have on it, but if the elgato software can do it too then I'm probably gonna go with a scarlet + DX now!
Elgato
Would you say this is 3x better than a Behringer XM8500 with a front addressing pop filter and generic rubber band shock mount??? (since it is ~3x more expensive than that combo) Because that is what i would call a true "budget" XLR dynamic mic, specially for those in the 3rd world like me that would use it with a cheap audio interface (U-Phoria UM2 USB is just $38).
Judging by the specs it’s using the capsule out the MTP 440 sounds great for the price look a bit like a toy though.
On my phone, it all sounds the same to me. 😂 I'll check this out later on my PC later. I didn't see a Procaster in the comparison?
If this would’ve came out before the Becan I would’ve went this route but the mic sadly didn’t and I’ve had the other for close to 3 months and man is that one amazing mic especially from a software standpoint. If you go with this then you can’t go wrong.
I'm reconsidering getting the BP40 now
I was actually expecting a Blue Sona video but this thing sounds pretty decent
What is your vocal chain.
Do a video on the blue sona by Logitech! I’d love your opinion on that one. I think it sounds terrible lol but streamers are going nuts over it, similar to the Beacn because of the looks.
Has anyone found any EU stores that sell the kit?
The logo unscrews so you can mount the arm to the other side.
Can try compare this against the fifine k688, it has USB plus XLR and looks interesting
Much better than K 668/669 C/ D.
can you suggest me a mic something like sm57 for streaming and podcast ?plzzz
SM 57. An all rounder mic. Best for noise rejection too.
Under the logo there's another mounting point, so you just cover the other one with it.
what is the best gain level for this wave dx in wave link?
That would depend entirely on your usage, there's no universal answers or "best" gain lol
@@EposVox in obs, i must pick Mic In or Stream Mix for Wave DX?
Stream Mix is the mix of all the different audio devices you might add or mix in Wave Link? Mic In is just the mic. So it depends on what you want to do.
Is this mic usb driven ?
Egatoe sounds so balanced at all ends. It is so detailed and natural. It aslo sounds pleasing too. Sounds like U 87 ai.
They should've asked you for footage for their announcement trailer as all of them others EQ and compressed their to death. I was like that doesn't sounds great at all but this vid changed my perspektive.
Saw this online....then it disappeared...thanks for giving this to us!
I would say the Maono HD300t is the q2u killer. XLR+USB, cheaper, comes with stand, shock mount, and pop filter. And sounds pretty good! That aside, color me surprised. I had asked elgato on Twitter a while back if they were planning on coming out with a dynamic microphone and they told me no. And yet here we are. Pretty neat, especially at it's price point. Definitely seems like they released it to specifically pair with the wave XLR. Great video as always!
I want to know how it performs with all the interfaces.
if only the HD300T had separate voice monitoring and source playback volume :/
it is a shame that i have to deafen myself with high monitor volume because i want a comfortable source volume, it should've had mixing capabilities IMO.
@@shanksisnoteventhatstrongbruh A $55 USB/XLR mic that comes with a stand, pop filter, and shock mount should also have had mixing capabilities? I guess some people just can't be pleased lol. Maybe if you pair it up with the free Steelseries Sonar app, you could mix things more to your liking. Its a super cool piece of software. Encroaches on Wave Link software territory a little bit even.
@@CoalitionGaming sorry what i meant with "mixing capabilities" is just a simple knob to adjust the volume of voice monitoring independent from playback volume, thats all. I've used sonar too but sidetone/monitoring through windows is super slow which makes it useless :(
Very cool budget option from elgato here.
elgato is stepping up its game everyday, i don't see any other brand compete in the streaming products category anytime soon. and few years ago i was a very hardcore razer fan, but it turns out that they didn't managed to keep the level, as high as they were used to do.
sounds very good for the price, quite impressed
Just watched your NZXT mic and then this one. The NZXT one looks much nicer, but obv this is the better option. What a weird choice to go with this cube route. Oh well, *adds to cart*
Hello, what is your orange XLR cable?
Just a random Amazon one
@@EposVoxohhh really. Means not branded
I still don't want software though. Is it still possible?
It’s an analog mic. There’s no software lol
But in this price category you can buy sE Electronics V7, which may not look so trendy, but sounds great and natural.
and some Lewitt dynamic mics too, which seem to have great quality (like the Lewitt MTP 250)
"Theres actually not a whole lot of p(BOOM)losives"
I think it would be sooooo much better with a USB port. Most people shopping in the $100 range are looking for something that's just "fine", and there are sooooooooo many XLR dynamic mics at that price point. But there are only a small handfull of USB dynamics, and it could've become the go-to in that specific category.
@@theRemedyGames If I were them Id've put out a USB/XLR mic first, and kept it at the $99 price point even if it meant sacrificing quality in other areas.
It would make it a highly accessible first mic for beginners, with a clear upgrade path to buying the Wave XLR.
they have a USB mic though and it already sounds good. they made a goxlr type of interface but have no XLR mics so I'm assuming this is why this mic was created
@@Austeen6900 the Wave:3 is a solid USB mic, but it's a condenser, which imo is a bad choice for beginners because most probably won't have a well-treated room to record in. Dynamics are more forgiving, so I think it's lame that there's so few cheap plug-and-play ones.
So if Elgato made the Wave DX *both* XLR and USB like the Samson Q2U, it would've been perfect. A beginner could buy it and start recording right away, and then wouldn't have to buy a whole new mic when they want to upgrade to an XLR interface (which would likely be the Wave XLR, since now they're used to Elgato's software ecosystem).
Audio’s by far my least favorite part of this little week that I’ve spent teaching myself Streaming and all the fun little ins and outs! But finishing it up I love the hell out of this lil Mic by Elgato! Never truly heard myself before! They might have created a monster!
What do ya'll think? Would this Mic be an upgrade or downgrade from the AT2020?
idk, personally I'd say if you already have the AT2020, I'd say save your money and stick with that tbh, still a great mic 👍
Upgrade but such a minor one not worth the price.
Looks promising, no nonsense microphone that just sounds good.
You seem unamused when you're doing the testing on the Beacn Mic, I guess it's your enemy :D
Hard to beat a SM57 + A2WS-BLK for $115 USD.
will we get a Blue Sona review ???
Not sure. They didn’t send me one and budget’s really tight right now
@@EposVox no problem. Best of luck for your studio
IDK if how budget this is for others, but here Wave DX + Wave XLR costs +276$, with no shipping fee, and currency conversion and
if normal Mic Arm is not compatible then another cost has to be added.
That's why me (and many other folks) don't like Elgato and they stupid design decisions that are made only to milk more cash.
In Elgato's defense, you don't HAVE to buy the Wave XLR, you can use it with any XLR interface, and my first mic arm was $13 from Amazon and it worked just fine with the mics that I used with it.
You don't have to get the wave xlr... you can get like a cheap $10-20 audio interface, and like $10 mic arm and this thing destroys a blue yeti which costs similar amounts. And many other similarly priced mics.
You just don't like Elgato and that's fine, I have gripes with some of their stuff too. But $100 for a mic of this quality is a pretty good deal.
Now how about an actual budget $50 mic?
Wave 1 is priced at $50 now
It really wish it was USB and not XLR .
Pardon? Dynamic XLR microphone at the very budget end costs $15. Lots of vocal dynamic mics are under a hundred: AKG D5, Sennheiser E835, and so on. Lots and lots.
elgato seems so perfect with all their product but it really doesnt play well with linux unforcunately
I mean, this is an analog mic, it has no operating system compatibility lol
It’s quite obvious, that you need a shock mount for the Wave DX. And while Elgato does provide a shock mount for their Wave 1 and Wave 3 microphones, on this one, you don’t get to buy one. So while the microphone sounds nice, it’s not my choice. I will stick to my good ol boring Shure SM58 or Shure Beta 58a. For those I can get a shock mount and a wind shield. And they rock such a good sound, that The Wave DX trembles in fear. It’s just… Well… Admittedly, my favorites look boring and let’s face it: People buy their microphones by looks.
ngl they all sound the same to me
but isnt it like, xlr? there will always be usb mics
It’s not “like” XLR, it is a XLR mic, yes
What’s special? 🤔
Shure SM7b
I didn't care for it. I will keep my Shure SM7B and my Rodecaster Pro 2.
Ah yes, because the upgrade path is expected to be from $400 mic to $100 mic lol
@@EposVox Hey...I have been burned with budget mics in the podcast throughout my time in podcasting. The Hyper X and the Rode Pod Mic just to name a few. Gotta go with what works and is dependable.
I just get confused by these comments because no one in their right mind would have suggested you downgrade in the first place lol
Once you get a mic in that tier you’re supposed to stop looking hah
@@EposVox The only reason for me to still be looking around is because of my kids. They are both 13 and both are starting to get that itch to stream.
I think this mic is for those who are in the elgato eco system. This fits in perfectly with that use case.
