Can a biopsy of a lesion suspicious for angiosarcoma be done in the office with a punch? because many biopsies cause profuse bleeding in vascular lesions. what do you recommend?

Hi Dr. I am a 28 year old male and I have angiosarcoma on the lining of my small intestine. It is a reoccurrence as it was originally on my back in the form of a lesion, I have a rare vasculitis as well Behçet’s Syndrome. I’m currently going to see Sloan Kettering here in NY but because it is so rare most oncologist I have seen have never encountered a patient with it let alone so young. This new doctor is a specialist on it so I am hopeful but what is the general prognosis for a patient in stage 4 with angiosarcoma of the small intestinal lining?

I am a 38 year old female and have been diagnosed with angiosarcoma in my liver. I have had DFSP twice. The second time it was metastatic. I have had cervical cancer too. I have been told that angiosarcoma in the liver is fatal. Is that true?

I’m so very sorry to hear all of this. I work closely with an angiosarcoma (and also a dfsp) patient support group on Facebook. You might find it helpful to join for understanding and support ( facebook.com/groups/101899709845272/?ref=share ). Angiosarcoma of the liver is unfortunately very aggressive. In some studies mortality was 100% but I’ve read some more recent work saying modern therapies might be changing this. I’ve seen a lot of angiosarcoma in my career but only a few were liver cases (I diagnosed those but didn’t learn of the final outcome). So my own personal experience with this is limited. One thing I do know is that statistics are useful for helping us understand how a disease behaves in general based on a group/population, but they don’t tell us what the outcome will be for any one individual patient. I have seen plenty of patients who “beat the odds” and were exceptions to the rule. I’m not trying to diminish the seriousness of the situation, but I think it’s important to keep hope. One of my favorite quotes from the wall of a cancer center where I used to work: “While there’s life, there’s hope.” I found that very powerful. I hope it helps you. Best wishes for healing and peace to you and your family.
