- Mathieu Labaye's short-movie, Camera etc (Belgium, Liège): www.camera-etc.be
Great tribute to his father Benoît Labaye, suffered from a multiple sclerosis at 29 years old. Benoît Labaye had been confined to a wheelchair since age 40 and died at 55 years old the 04.22.2006, as a result of a pneumonia.
In the movie, you can hear Benoît Labaye speaking:
"I think it's by the movement you appropriate your own life. By the freedom to come and go, to have gestures of love, tenderness, anger, whatever. When you are deprived of movements, as I am and as a lot of other people are, I think if you want to survive, you must reinvent the movement differently. And so what happens inside my head isn't purely brain, purely intellectual. It's a way of recreating an inner space which is also my freedom."
"When you live a severe handicap, when you live absolutely still, dependent, you live, in fact, something that can't be shared, that can't be easily expressed, which you can't easily talk about. Because when two people talk, to be able to understand each other, they need to have a minimum of common experience between them, to speak of something they both know from some form of experience."
"Sure, the stillness, the handicap, brings you to the conclusion and to the gradual acceptance that there's a certain number of things that you can't do. But conversely I think it opens a whole bunch of new possibilities, notably with inner freedom, inner space, but also with the way you can come in contact, in relation with others.
I think there is in the handicap, in the disease, a lot of potentiality. The human being is inexhaustible at the level of desire, of energy, of inner strength. Ans it's something you discover with maybe more urge, more intensity, when you're deprived of movement."

If there wass anything out there that makes me feel like a lazy animator....it's this
lol
Coming from this man, this hurts me more
He is basically talking about how when you're handicapped you are deprived of physical movement, so you have to develop your own "inner" movement.
I have called this my favorite animation of all time for over a decade. I have such love for this piece and have shared it with all those I respect. It is brilliant in concept and the execution is beyond humbling as a fellow animator. My soul buzzes with each viewing, I return once a blue moon with fresh eyes and they have yet to be disappointed.
There's something about the big burst of energy when the dancing begins that feels so visceral to me. I just inexplicably feel the urge to move right now; it's magic the way a body can be prompted to speak to you.
Translation Part3:
Immobility and handicap, tend to make you slowly realize and accept that there's a certain number of things you can't do. But on the other hand, I also believe that it allows you to open to other possibilities, like internal freedom, internal space but also your encounter with other people. I think that in the handicap and this illness, there is actually a big potential.
Translation Part2:
When you have a severe handicap, when you live totally immobile and dependent, you live something that you can't share. Something you can't easily express, something you can't easily talk about. When 2 people are talking, in order to understand each other, they need mutual experiences between them. They need to talk about something for which they each have some form of experience.
why is this short-movie so amazing ? because he did it with his soul, with his heart.
the animation is as powerful as the message.
Take THAT Pixar and Disney!
Hand drawn 2D animation will NEVER lose its appeal
I have been trying to find this video again for some time. I had completely forgotten what it was called or who made it. I thought about it often, when I was hanging up laundry outside. It was nice to find again, and a cried a bit. It's very beautiful.
I frequently think about this short and I never can remeber its name or its creator name :O
this might be the most beautiful animation i have ever seen in my life
that might just be one of the coolest animated pieces ive ever seen. well done le french dude.
thats the best thing ive seen.so technically simple but such an optical expierience
The piece is superb...
with the power of animation alone he's given us the truth that our minds can go beyond our own physical forms and expand further through thought, even to the point of shapes and colors. this is so touching it destroys you. his father is proud wherever he is
Vraiment.
Robert Thompson brought me here.
I'm very glad he did
Same for me!
Love love love love this!!
Wow, you really have to frame by frame through this one to savour the juices. Art.
I don't think this has enough views, it's jaw-dropping.
Superb. Amazing piece of artwork.
je l'aurais vu 1000 fois je crois !! excellent
Mathieu Labaye you are a genius. simple, yet original idea, that emotionally and visually packs a punch!
Amazing!!! Loved and actually blown over by the content. I consider myself lucky that I could see this in my lifetime....
Il est vraiment magique ce petit film...
OMG!!!!! It's amazing!!!! One of the best animations I've ever seen in my entire life!
Good job!
The most beutiful piece of animation I've seen to date... I'm speachless.
Absolutely brilliant.
Mind blowing, and being an animator myself I can appreciate the amount of work that was put into this, chapeau!
This is great, thanks for sharing!
That was one of the greatest pieces of animation I've seen in quite some time.
Just the colors alone are amazing
The best animated short I've ever seen in my life
This all seems so natural :) !
WOW! This was amazing!
Even better than I expected at first!
Super beau film Mathieu.
Et bel hommage aussi.
:)
Olivier D,
soo...I won't be able to sleep anymore, knowing that animation this amazing exists in the world
Bravo!! l'anim est superbe!! J'Adore!!
Human beings are extremely resourceful, in their desires, their energy, internal forces and those are thinga we may discover with more urgency, with more forces when we are deprived of movement.
Very much like Studio4° and Masaaki Yuasa's work. I love it.
...speechless animator here.
That.
Blew.
My.
Mind.
WOW.
AMAZING!
totaly mindblowing
JJ
Now THAT is animation.
Masterful.
This is the most amazing short I've seen in .....well forever. Seems very 4 c and very original. I'm definately inspired to be an better animator now
i was speaking about frames per second, for example one second is always one second no matter if its on 12 fps or 24 fps, if you have lot of things going in short fragment of time you do everything on ones (24 fps) on contrary if you have slow action you can do it on twos without doing inbetweens
Normal spacing is on twos and far spacing is on ones.
very fantastic
Inspired, salute labaye
Wow, vraiment impressionnant!
now THAT is animation
This is amazing talent. This is the kind of realism all but a few would have to roto-scope to get.
Superbe sous tous rapports.
Not to offend in any way but is some of this rotoscoped? The animation was that amazing
yes!
the dancing bit on the white background remind me of an Apple commercial, anyone else think they got the idea from this short?
You'r close but its not right. a second in a film is 24 fps but in animation is 12, each one is duplicated. But i know, Its a LOT of them and this short is awesome, and not only for the time spent to made it ;)
You are a fantastic animator. Post this on newgrounds
Merci
Increible
génial !
oh my god its so beautiful
Mathieu, ton film est superbe ! Vraiment, quel talent !
Félicitations, tu m'as mis ma claque de la journée. De la semaine... de l'année ! (2007 compris!)
this must be the coolest thing I've ever seen. I wish I could understand it though
Genial...
usually the frequency of frames in full animation is 24 fps (done on ones especially when the motion is fast like this)
.
vraiment impressionnant!
Translation Part1:
I think that it's through movement that we can take over our own life, it's through the freedom of coming and going, having gestures, gestures of love, tenderness, anger. When you are deprived of movement, like I am, like many other people are, I think that if we want to survive, we need to re-invent movement some other ways. What's going on in my head is not purely cerebral, it's not purely intellectual, it's a way to recreate an internal space which is my freedom.
WOW!! simply brilliant animation. is it just me or the first animations and the sound effects with the different people moving attached to the strings resemble the computer game broken sword?? did the guy who made this had something to do with the game? 5 stars video!!
yeaaaah merci!
@MrsHoek
Yes !!! Mathieu Labaye is a great animator isn't it ?
At first, I was like "wtf?" and then I was like "This is the coolest thing ever."
wow
Acid trip simulator:
CSSSA Rules Hey CSSSA 2010 number one
I consider myself lucky that I could see this in my lifetime 2
wow how would you make something like this im assuming not flash lol but that was amazing
wondeful
I'm very interested in the process of the animation here. It's obviously 24fps AT LEAST, I wonder if the artist went higher than that.
Also: He obviously created an animation guide, but did he use refrence for every single one of the characters? Must be over 2K unique characters, assuming it was "just" 24fps...
Hello Rachel, the animation is a 25 fps and was made, in 2007-2008, with light table, paper and pencil. The movement, was created by the animators with drawing roughs. After that, the animators and the assistants created, with their imagination, every different character for every 2 images. A particular attention was made in the graphic relation between them (size, clothes) who had to be in a continuous movement. Bye !
How long did the production take for you?
great animation....english translation?
Holy fucking shit. Simply amazing. Probably get asked this non stop but how long did this take to make roughly?
3:54 , if you want to skip the intro
@mineofGod And then I was like, "wtf?" again, but I'm pretty stoned.
but... but... how?
wooow
That was incredible!!
However, I don't speak French and i don't think the translate option was spot on.
