Thanks for doing this review. Watched several others do reviews and most all have the same complaints, plus issues with dead batteries and fuel pumps going out.
Hard to feel confident this bike can get me home out of the woods. All these reliability concerns and heat issues are making the Honda AT much more appealing.
It's very good that you raised these issues and inferior designs. However there are solutions. 1. Heat: KTM 1290 is even hotter (it's what happens in performance engines, 150+ hp, they generate heat - that's life), you can buy after market heat shields (check out Aeedea or Aliexpress) for the RHS catalytic converter and a fan heat deflector for the LHS; 2. Radiator hose burns: have dealer replace under warranty, there are some examples where the radiator hose was not routed correctly at the Factory resulting in the hose touching or being too close to the exhaust; 3. Head light: remove fairing, loosen the screws on either side of the headlight, move the headlight up a little. There is plenty of light coming from the headlight, just that your headlight is may not be pointing /angled correctly; 4. I have no issues with the Sundowner seat, it's very good, if it's pushing you forward, shim off a little of the 2 rear feet of the seat; 5. GPS: While I agree that it would be better for the bike to have Android Auto/Apple Car Play, the on-board GPS works well and exactly as intended, it gives directions that's all, no speed limits, no speed camera warnings, no diners. It is a GPS, Harley is not saying otherwise; 6. Fuel cap: Mine is a PA Special, mine has a locking fuel cap as standard. 7. Saddlebags: Agree about the needing a key thing, that's why I went with Hepco & Becker bags, note Givi and others also have quality bags that don't need a key to open/close.

I brought a Pan Am this year, used it every day and I love it. Yes it is hot from the exahust, fix my problem with a spare piece of back protector, strapped to my leg. The light is better than the 60w Halogen that I have on my Lowrider, I am fitting the driving lights. Seat, I ordered Sargent seats, fixed. I have not noticed my standard seat being loose. Rear brake hose, fit a heavy duty cable cover. Navigation, yes is shit. Hand guards, replaced with Barkbusters. My fuel cap has a key, mind you my 1988 Lowrider doesn't have a lockable fuel cap, and I've not had a problem with someone messing with it in 35 years. Meh heated seats, what is the point. Thank bridge, don't see the problem, my Lowrider doesn't have a phone pocket, then we didn't have small mobiles phone in 1988. Now there is a pocket under the back seat. I gave up at 13 minutes.

I just bought a new to me 2021 special in gauntlet Grey metallic. It comes with an extended warranty for three years and I put the ultimate trekker package on it with a Vance and Hines HO exhaust.
It was more comfortable for me than a road glide.

Hd could opt to turn the engine so the exhaust would be on the front instead of heating your legs. Like the MotoGuzzi V85TT.

Good review of the real problems of this fantastic bike. I would settle for fixing the extreme heat in the right leg. I have a 21 PAS 3 months ago. Hi from Spain!

Great review. I was looking at purchasing a Pan America today. You saved me a lot of buyers remorse. I think I'll go back my other two choices the BMW GS or the new Triumph Tiger 1200.
previous HD owner. I bought a Tiger 900 Rally pro after test riding a PA. The PA is an overpriced POS.

Great video. I own the Nightster and it has similar problems. The heat on the right side of the bike can be problematic. I replaced the stock seat , but while it looks better, I keep my Airhawk Seat Cushion on it. My biggest complaint is the 2.25 hour job to replace the spark plugs. The Pan American has a similar job and to service your air filter is a nuisance (much worse than mine). I see that you traded and I await your response to the BMW bike.
Switch to Motul full synthetic oil. I had the sane problem with a 1987 FJ1200 in Houston Texas traffic. So bad that my bike would quit. I switched to this oil and my heat was cut by 3/4. Amazing oil.
Harley will fix your issues on your bike. Seat and water pipe. Contact Harley.
I totally agree on navigation. I have an alpine navigation in my truck. Sucks. I wrote them and said Google navigation please.

A lot of Goldwing and Africa Twin owners are less than impressed with the Honda Apple Car Play system too. A lot of manufacturers home grown systems seem to be pretty poor.
Former Africa Twin owner here. Apple Car play was okay, but only when it connected correctly. I just gave up and just rode the bike. Loved the snot out of it before I got a Pan America.
Shoulda bought a Triumph or BMW. HD produced a rushed prototype to help save the flagging sales. They told reviewer to make it sound like a BMW GSA killer otherwise they would ban them from other test bikes. Three years after launch and used low mile PA’s are selling for $12000 under the $28000 dealers were marking them up to. Way to go Harley!

Yep. Just try GSA before. I just trade PAS for GSA and no regrets. 40 years experience mean something.

I rode mine around Jacksonville, Fla in 95 deg weather. I had riding boots and big boy pants on. I dont get the heat complaints.
I wrapped my pipe with exhaust wrap and put the heat shield back on over the wrap. This took care of the heat on the leg issue. I rode from Montana to Florida and back and the exhaust did not burn my radiator hose.
I did it too. bought exhaust pipe tape and its reduce heat, but not remove it.
I keep reading all of these complaints about engine and exhaust heat. I have ridden my PA in Jacksonville,Fla. On a 95deg day in stop and go traffic. I dont know what the complaining is about. That being said I always wear long pants and high top riding boots. Maybe you fellows should stick to driving cars with the AC on high.
I agree with all your concerns. Being a panam owner myself. The tft on auto setting at night time always goes super bright and it’s a distraction and also discomfort to your eyes..

All valid points. My windshield solution was CalSci size medium. Yeah, it looks like a monkey F-ing a football but it creates a nice pocket of calm air, comparable to any road glide. Seriously.
The sundowner does a good job eliminating felt vibration but yes, you slide forward.
The A1 style risers or any similar configuration is mandatory (2' up, 2" back) Huge difference
I felt more heat from my '19 Heritage
The sport (plastic) bags are useful but cheap -and definitely not waterproof!
This is my 7th harley. So far the most fun
Motorcycle is great, looks like Humvee, bullet proof piece of steel. Great bike for soldiers. Great bike on battlefield.

After one look at the Pan America I went and bought a new BMW GSA! So happy!!
All bikes have faults if u looking for them my ktm 1290r adventure gearbox went after 3400 miles only used on road on a sunny day got it back after 11 months in workshop
That's how they make money. All their models are like this, lacking basic necessary things which should come as standard. But then they sell those same necessary parts as accessories so we shell out more money.
I live in Mexico City. Bought a 2021 and had endless issues. Had to take legal action with the dealer for them to agree to buy it back (market price) and get a discount on a 2022. I agreed and got the 2022… BIG MISTAKE. Again issue after issue. I have been a Harley guy for the last 8 years and I’m done with them. Their customer service is non existent. Technicians have no clue every time. Ridiculous. Selling the PanAm and leaving the brand for good.

Agreed. I have a 22 PA-S. Very Very Hot, GPS terrible, Turn signal switch is weird position, Hard Pannier bags on order for 4 months so far. I've burned my leg very bad ... once. Don't ride this beast wearing shorts.
You should be wearing shorts when on a motorcycle. From a former road rash victim who now always wears ballistic gear and riding boots.

Having owned a 21 and now a 22 PA here's what you need to know before buying it, 1. It's an electrical pile of garbage, 2, its a mediocre bike at a premium price, 3. HD has tons of dealers and none of them can or will actually fix this turd! 4. These bikes should come with a trailer and a comfortable pair of walking shoes, you will need both.
You got owned, mines been solid and my dealer has been able to fix the one issue I’ve had which was the started that actually never broke, just made a weird noise

Rode them all, GS boring, AT booring, SuperT boooring, 1290 KTM had some character bit the PA was the only one that had what it takes. Too bad you know nothing about the bike but to wiggle things.
