People keep saying that John purposely played the bass badly on this song to sabotage it, if this is the way he actually played on record, it’s actually not that bad. Thx for this video!
Good example for a slow song to follow as a beginner. That's what I love about the bass: grounding and somehow keeps all together and wraps it.

While it could have been a little better I still appreciate John’s attempts on bass

Unfortunately, it's not good that bass line, but it's not the Paul's bass line
But the weird thing is McCartney has stuck more or less to Lennon's bass line when he has recorded his own versions, so he must have approved of it.

The album version of Across the Universe does actually feature bass (likely an upright bass played by the orchestra). If you can’t hear it, it’s especially audible at the end of the song.
If John didn’t like this song, I’d have to agree. I’ve never liked it either.
