  • @RON_HART
    @RON_HART Před 2 lety +8

    The main reason why the PS3 collection wasn’t ported over is BECAUSE it’s on the PS3.
    Keep in mind, the PS2 and PS3 had very weird, foreign architecture. Trying to transfer over and improve the code from the PS2 to the PS3 was itself a monumental task (Sadly outside the GOW, MGS, and few other collections, the Jak and Ratchet collections both seemed very rushed). They’d of had to take a lot of time to make the Frankenstein code made from the PS3 version work with the PS4. Also probably the reason why the Sky, Ratchet, GOW, Ico/Shadow etc. collections haven’t been made.
    They could of used emulation for all those games too, but I’m guessing their PS2 emulator didn’t work well with them.

    • @HowGoodGames
      @HowGoodGames  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah good observations, ps3 architecture from everything I’ve heard was an absolute bloody nightmare to work with. On top of that, insomniac have later said that they’re organisation of files and work for the ps2 games were really messy and lots of things were lost. When another team were making the ratchet hd collection, they had to sort through it all to figure it out and funnily enough, insomniac were only able to finish Ratchet 2016 on time because the other developers had gone through and organised all their original resources.
      With all that said, I’ve just posted a video on the Jak PC port which is a great example of how much work it is to port things from one system to another as well

    Awesome! I used to play these games a lot as a kid and loved to go bug and glitch hunting. There was even a part in Jak 2 where there wasn't any collision detection and you could just leave the city. I wonder if those bugs are still there..

  • @JadedDarkness
    @JadedDarkness Před 2 lety +3

    Both the video and Nostalgic Ape summed up the console versions really well so I just wanted to add that there are ways to play the games on PC. You can emulate either the PS2 or PS3 versions on PC if you have a good PC to run the emulators. They aren't perfect emulations but they're fully playable. The PSP games can also be easily emulated and run basically flawlessly thanks to the very efficient PPSSPP emulator.
    Also worth noting, there is currently a fan project call OpenGOAL which is essentially porting the original game to PC. This means the game runs natively on your PC like any other PC game and isn't emulated. This means you can run the game with much better visuals than any console release. It's still in development though so while you can play the first game from start to end, there are some bugs and there is no sound implemented yet. But once it is done it could very well be the best way to play the first game (and hopefully the sequels in the future).

    • @HowGoodGames
      @HowGoodGames  Před 2 lety +2

      Hadn’t heard of OpenGOAL that sounds awesome! Good shout out with emulators as well, thanks for adding the option to the mix as well! For anyone unfamiliar with PPSSPP, it can also be run on mobile fairly easily and paired with a backbone or similar controller really delivers that same portable feel. Thanks for the shout out JadedDarkness!

    The ps4 versions are really iffy. The frame rate issues are one thing. The crashing is a whole new thing. It only happened to me once on jak 1. But I was near end game. When I collected just one more orb, the game will always crash and corrupt my save file. I had to restart the whole game from the very beginning

      Yeah I had huge issues with the boss from Jak 3, it has an AOE attack that glitched out, so instead of it being a ring you could jump over it was a deadset wall that filled the whole screen. It was the first time I played it and didn’t know it was even a glitch so just kept dying trying to figure out how to get past it until I saw a CZcams walkthrough and realised it was a mistake. Absolutely terrible ports

    There's a native port to PC. A group of people developing a project called OpenGOAL to rewrite the original Jak and Daxter code native for PC, not emulation. It runs the same as original or better if you're so inclined and they even plan to have support for mods and user created levels. Some of the original unfinished content is slightly playable.

    obviously it’s would be best to play them on ps2, full original expirience. but not many people still have access to that so i recommend playing them on Ps3. a giant issue with Ps4 is the way jak snaps into 1 of 8 directions. when you roll jump, you’ll sometimes roll in very unwanted directions it’s pretty annoying

When naughty dog began developing it, it was going to be a psp exclusive, but when they needed to shift focus to uncharted and handed development to high impact games, they developed it for both systems and released it at the same time. Depending on how much of naughty dogs framework they used it most likely started with a lot of assets developed for the psp though, but yeah, technically not a port still.
