  • Turning a cherry wood lidded box. It’s very cold right now here in Alaska (negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit the other day), and my workshop is not heated or insulated. So, if it’s negative 22F outside, it’s negative 22F in my shop. You’ll see my breath in this vid, as well as occasional steam coming from the wood as I cut.

    I like seeing the natural shine of the wood when it is well sanded. Something about that shine that no extra finish can give. I understand that the finishes give protection, but that 1st. shine is special

      Thank you! Cherry is one of my favorites. Just under black walnut :)

    I trust that since you made this video, you have found that holding the roughing gouge handle lower and allowing the gouge to cut the wood away instead of scraping it away produces a better finish. The tools have an edge on them for a reason.

      Yes, definitely still learning as I go :) I'm still learning and working to improve to this day, but making this video was very early on in my experience. One area I still really need to practice and master is working with a skew.

    Amazing you do that in the cold. The cherry looked really nice

      Thank you! It takes everything I’ve got to tough out the cold sometimes. It can be negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit at points. The fingers become quite uncomfortable at that point lol.

    I never aloud students to use the wood lathe with long sleeve on.

      Probably a lot safer not to wear one, but it was 15 degrees in my shop when I did this video so I was forced to wear something to stay warm :)

    curious to know what the "line" was that you used to cut/burn a line into the lid. Otherwise, nice job.

    how did you get the lid off when you had to pound it on I have troulbe getting mine off sometimes

    • @JustinBeyerlin1
      @JustinBeyerlin1  Před 2 lety +1

      It seemed to come off relatively easily with a little twisting. I've had some on so tight that I had to pry with a tool and ended up breaking the lid. The pounding I did with the mallet makes the lid look tighter in the video than it actually was.

    I can just imagine the silent sigh, when the lid dropped ... I love the result. The detail you made with the burning wire (is it a burning wire?) is pretty cool.

    • @JustinBeyerlin1
      @JustinBeyerlin1  Před 2 lety

      Oh there's been a lot of those silent sighs in my shop! Haha Thank you! That wire is actually an acoustic guitar string. The larger guitar strings have wire wrapped around them, which digs in and burns nicely for this type of stuff.
