    Nice! The Rusty Rat was the first Atlantic Salmon Fly I ever tied. While I had online help, I found the wing was very objective. There were a few ways of stacking it according to my helpers. I finally just stacked it normally and tied it as any other , I love tying them.

    Hi Rich, The way you have presented the tying of this head is excellent, it sets young people up for life and also it shows how more materials can be added to the wing, i.e.-a mixed or full wing on other patterns. Your output seems too high to keep going.
    Regarding classic known patterns "Farlow's Salmon Flies" (Cochy-y-bonddhu books, 2017) would be a good investment, as these are developed patterns. An excellent resource. Most fly dressers would have their own variants off the rat series for local waters, and essentially the profile of all the series is the same. Your point as a startup fly technique would be spot on.Nicely done as a future resource.

      Mike, thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment. I plan to do some mixed hair wing pattern videos in the future as well. Farlows is on my list of books to pick up in the near future. I'm always looking for more resources for patterns, and the history of how they came about. Thank you for reminding me of it. I'm going to have a look for a copy. Thanks again!!! 😎✌

    Rusty Rat
    When I tie mine, I use small oval tinsel for the tag and medium for the body. My body is two equal sections of silk and peacock here. The ribbon goes through the herl. For the collar, I quite often use guinea.
    When it comes to winging the fly, all hairs are fair game... so far today, I have used wolverine and light beaver... next up is red fox. I'll probably finish off this set with black bear, I don't like brown bear (grizzly) for tying because the hair is really kinky.

    Danville 6/0 seems like maybe an odd choice for the head. It gives about the crudest finish of any commercial tying thread. That said, I use it almost exclusively b/c it's much more forgiving for tyers with hand-tremors and/or cheap bobbins. I have to whip finish after just about every stage of the fly for insurance. ;)

      @flytyingwithrichlamonte  Před 6 dny

      I would agree totally tho at the time that I made thos video inhwas having a hard time finding any larartun, or veevus in red. Also being a fishing fly and jot a display fly, the Danville does serve the purpose and get the job done. For display lies inwould recommend something like a white or red veevus, or lagartun with a red varnish.

    I always wondered what the original wing for the rusty rat was. I know most use fox of some sort. Rather that be red, grey or silver fox. I like your videos man keep up the good work. Have you had any experience fishing or catching fish on the rusty rat?

    • @flytyingwithrichlamonte
      @flytyingwithrichlamonte  Před rokem +2

      The true pattern calls for gray fox tail guard hairs. So the tier would typically comb out the underfur and use just the longest hairs. I used the squirrel out of necessity but to me the squirrel being a little finer makes for a better looking wing. Just my opinion of course. I haven't used a rusty rat in many years but I was successful with both trout and salmon with it. I can't fish much anymore due to health so now I tie for fun and art. I do know many anglers that have used the rats with great success in trout, steelhead and salmon. Overall its a really great classic pattern!

  • @spencervanderhoof6533

    Very nice tie! Somehow, for me personally, that fly appeals to my idea of what catches fish. A great many salmon flies don’t appeal to me. This one does. Thanks!

      @flytyingwithrichlamonte  Před rokem

      It's a nice somewhat simple salmon pattern to tie and i agree, it does have that look of a fly that would catch fish. And indeed it does catch fish!! 😎🤘

      Yes. Sadly. The shop is for sale. I don't believe there is anyone interested in it yet but Malinda is looking to sell the shop. I just hope someone buys it and keeps it open. Tho she is leaving some pretty big shoes to fill. Knowledgable and personable shop owners like her are rare.
