  • Watch this excellent presentation with a very good Q&A at the end, of Dr. Matthew Phillips exploring the potential therapeutic benefits of metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, in neurological disorders.
Matt is a clinical and research neurologist at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand. His foremost passion is to explore the potential feasibility, safety, and efficacy of metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, in creating alternate metabolic states that may benefit people with a variety of neurological disorders. His team conducted the world’s first randomized studies involving only people with Parkinson’s, followed by Alzheimer’s. He is currently conducting a clinical trial involving that combines intensive fasting with a ketogenic diet alongside standard treatments in patients with glioblastoma multiforme.

I believe Dr Sayfried has shown that mitochondria malfunction makes cancer a metabolic disorder. Cancer does not use oxygen to make atp but uses the fermenting attribute to generate energy and thus to starve it to death without glucose is a completely new method to deal with cancer. So yes fasting will work with cancer. Your own victorious cells will remove this horror.

I am 75 years old and i am a long time runner and weight lifter although not with the endurance and intensity as in my younger days. Intuitively, i understand your work and I do intermittent fasting myself. My fasting can be two days or three days. I have cut my 25 Carbidopa/ 100 Levodopa from 8 tables to just three tablets a day spaced 5 hours apart. I agree with your assessment, based on my own experience with my particular Parkinson’s, the non-motor symptoms are my bane in this affliction.
Incidentally, my Parkinson’s may have been brought about by Vietnam exposure three direct sprays with Agent Orange. Moreover, I worked in cotton fields that eventually were sprayed with pesticides and herbicides. Additionally, i did a little boxing in my youth and quit after being knocked down three times in one round. I could not continue after the multiple blows to my head. According to my genetic testing, I do not have a genetic propensity for Parkinson’s.

Thank you, Dr. Phillips, for this phenomenal presentation! It confirms what I've been thinking about the benefits of fasting for PD since I learned about fasting last year. You explained everything so clearly and eloquently. I've done a lot of Googling and never come across your work before, so I'm so glad that someone in a Parkinson's Facebook group posted a link to this video! I'm so excited that you're doing this work with Parkinson's patients, and I REALLY hope you're able to do a longer study that incorporates fasting!
You mention mitophagy in your presentation. I originally became interested in fasting because of autophagy. I first thought that fasting could benefit PD because autophagy could eliminate the Lewy bodies. But upon reading the book Brain Fables, I learned (as you mention in this video) that Lewy bodies are likely not the cause of PD. At the very end of Brain Fables, they mention research being done by Dr. Kariem Ezzat at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The research is on the invisible nanoparticles or viruses (what they refer to as “nucleating factors”) that trigger normal proteins to change shape, become insoluble, and lose function. This made me think about how autophagy could allow the body to get rid of any toxins, viruses, etc that could be triggering PD. So, maybe this is another way (in addition to mitophagy) in which autophagy can help to heal PD.
I fear we'll see a boom in “autophagy activator drugs” that induce autophagy. I can't imagine they'll be as effective as what our body knows how to do on its own. I truly hope that the majority of people choose the more natural route. Our bodies know how to heal - we just need to give them the chance!
Thank you again for the incredibly important work you're doing!!!

I don't have PD, my mother does. I have transitioned from keto to keto-carnivore and increased fat intake, eating one meat or fish meal a day. Also i do one 48hr fast per week, after which i feel amazing with sharpness of mind and energy in spades. I haven't felt this good since childhood. I was keto for 4 months with slow weight loss but and some improvement in energy, mood and brain function. But once I eliminated plant food (2 months ago), things improved dramatically. I am doing this to lose a lot of weight (30kg so far in 6mths, 20kg to go). It is extremely effective and EASY because my appetite is very low and craving for sweet things has almost entirely disappeared thanks to consistent ketosis, fasting, almost complete removal of plant food and increasing animal fat intake. The high fat makes easy bowel movements too.
My mother has PD, I want her to try keto fasting, but unlike me, she is underweight and is struggling to gain. So if I am eating high fat (adding cream, butter, suet) and 500g meat/fish per day and my body STILL (miraculously!) mobilises and metabolises fat from my adipocytes, how can I get my mother into ketosis/fasting to get the benefits of that but at the same time INCREASE her stored body fat???

This is amazing and revolutionary! I was diagnosed with PD almost two years ago at age 61. I've implemented multiple strategies for managing it and hopefully slowing the progression. These include cleaning up my diet, exercise, supplements, red-light therapy, high-dose b1, and others. When I first saw this video two weeks ago I immediately initiated a two-day fast and then went 100% keto and intermittent fasting (into ketosis by the second day). I've already noticed an improvement in my mood and a decrease in fatigue. I'm excited to see where this can go longer-term for myself and others with PD. These protocols look to significantly reduce suffering! This is a very big deal! Dr. Phillips, you mentioned that since the study was done 5 years ago and your learning has continued that you would change a few things. Besides what you mention like extending the protocol to 6 months, what else would you change as far as applying what you've learned? Much gratitude for the work you're doing. ~ Brad

For example, my sense of smell is back online more of the time. I acknowledge that my experience is not proof applicable to everyone. I do enjoy a mug of bulletproof coffee in the morning , one tablespoon MCT or coconut oil plus one tablespoon grass fed butter plus a squirt of Stevia. My question…does that break my fast? • @drmclphillips
      @drmclphillips Před rokem +7

Hi Chris, awesome protocol you have there. It is not a black and white answer, depends how you define fasting - can be nothing, water only, water/tea/coff only, etc. The aim is to sustain ketosis. Given your goal of improving the PD, the pure fats you ingesting do not break your fast, as they will elevate ketosis if anything. Only the sweetener would be debatable - if it is a tiny suirt, it's probably ok, but no sweetener is the best kind of sweetener if possible. Sincere regards - Matt.

I am completely convinced it has made a difference, but I have no proof. You are doing the research for that proof. Interestingly, my PD friends (and my MDS) ask what I am doing that I am doing so well. I talk about my diet, exercise, meditation, sleep. However the constipation and dysautonomia are now so severe that I need to take Mestinon. Probiotics, prebiotics, all manner of laxatives are ineffective. Have ordered a coronet red light helmet from Well Red. I really hope this is all still reversible but I just want to say fasting, keto and a tonne of exercise have saved my life the past ten years. Hi Beebe, thank you for the information. I am aware of the potential for thiamine in PD from a number of sources now, yes. However, it is a single supplement capable of only altering the body's physiology on a small scale. By contrast, metabolic strategies such as fasting, keto diet etc alter the body's entire metabolic state - fuel source for brain and muscle, gene expression in many cells, bioenergetics etc. I favour the latter approaches as having far more potential for good in PD, which I view as a mitochondria disorder. I am not against any supplement, only neutral - if it helps and you can finance it, by all means use it. Sincere regards, Matt.

Dr Phillips, How does a person get officially diagnosed with Parkinson’s? My husband is 52 and has had his head and neck MRI and it’s come back normal. So they ruled out stroke or MS. They prescribed him Carbidopa-Lovidopa to use a a tool to help diagnose him. The Dr said that if it helps with his motor issues then it’s probably Parkinson’s, but if it doesn’t either it’s not Parkinson’s or he’d probably up the dosage. He did also order another scan to check his dopamine, but said that the scan was optional. I don’t understand how it’s acceptable to use a drug as a diagnosis tool. He much rather try diet and fasting to see if that makes a difference. He’s had digestive issues most of his life, so gut health is probably a real issue with him as well. His symptoms aren’t that bad that he needs a pill. We live in central Florida , do you know any specialists in this area that we should connect with? Please advise on how to get an official diagnosis.

Hi Lynn, I'm not a doctor, but I do know that a short course of levodopa is often used as a way of distinguishing between Parkinsons (which it will help) and Parkinsonism syndrome such as MSA (which it won't help). My mother was in the latter category and was also offered levodopa as a diagnostic tool.
You could experiment with macuna pruriens as a natural source of levodopa and do the same yourselves. Someone on the Health Unlocked PD forum is having good results with the Piping Rock one which is 15% levodopa. (Note that batches may vary in strength).

I think you would find Dr Hauser (CD; his wife is a dietician; they seem very good at helping patients whom no other doctor has been able to help) in Ft Myers very helpful. He has youtube videos you can check; see Dr Hauser and Vagus nerve.

Hi Lynn - the diagnosis is clinical, so what you really need is a good and confident neurologist. If your husband's current neurologist is unsure, a second opinion might be useful. Best wishes, Matt.

Just been googling about those monkeys as they were so striking - was disappointed to find that there have been contradictory results from a later experiment.

For fasting in relation to a woman's cycle, check out Dr. Mindy Pelz, she wrote a great book called "Fast like a girl"

I would suggest that the “health” community will be forever indebted to Matt. I doubt that SAMS, Sad American Medical System, will fight him to the death. Too much money on the table!

Of course this is unrelated to effectivity or quality of Dr Matthew Phillips described Metabolic strategies but one can find calling such distinguished and meritoriuos to medical experiments animal i.e. Rhesus Macaque a Chimapnzee utterly propestrous.

Hi! Yep, it was so long since I read the study that I misnamed the primate, my mistake entirely. It was pointed out to me soon after but alas, too late to do anything about it. Thanks for letting me know, Matt.
