đŹ 5 BEST FREE Video Editing Software

- In this step-by-step tutorial, learn about the best 5 free video editors.
First, I show you how to use a video editor that comes for free with Windows 10. The Windows 10 free video editor is a basic editor that can produce nice videos. However, there are some drawbacks.
Next, we look at the OpenShot video editor. OpenShot is easy to use, quick to learn, and a surprisingly powerful video editor. Next, we review ShotCut video editor. Shotcut is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor for Windows, Mac and Linux.
We then look at Kdenlive, another free and open-source video editor that's easy to use.
Lastly, we look at the video editor that I personally use, DaVinci Resolve 17. DaVinci Resolve is divided into "pages," each of which gives you a dedicated workspace and tools for a specific task. Editing is done on the cut and edit pages, visual effects and motion graphics on the Fusion page, color correction on the color page, audio on the Fairlight page, and media organization and output on the media and deliver pages.
At the end, we also take a quick look at a few other noteworthy mentions, including VSDC Video Editor, HitFilm Express, and VideoPad.

Kevin, the best thing about your videos is that there's not a single second wasted. Every second is valuable and loaded with knowledge and information.

Yesssssss
The guy is a natural teacher..a godsend.
Yep
Yep
Hello Kevin, I thoroughly enjoyed your videos and just happened on this one. Your series on Excel is where I found your channel. You, using DaVinci Resolve with the steep learning curve, is like my getting into Excel, bumping around in the dark, learning every minute.
I look forward to learning to use DaVinci Resolve in my next business; this will help a lot.
Major thanks for this Kevin!! You saved my A!
IMHO this is one of the most important videos on You Tube! I was in a bind needing to produce a simple video and I downloaded and deleted other editing software to try for 3 hours until I found yours. I was so frustrated at this point! I just used the 1st one you mentioned: The video editor that comes with windows--and my video turned out great in no time at all. I wish it had a few more features--but it had the essentials easy and fast to use. Can't tell you the number of compliments I received on my 10 minute video. I filmed an event a few weeks ago, and I was able to crop the beginning, the end, add some JPEGs, and Microsoft covered the sound track with their no license music--perfect!
All the best to you for a great summer!
When I get a chance I will watch the rest of your video to see if there is an editor that is better than Microsoft. I used to use the MS Movie editor all the time on my old computers but I can't find a recent download for Windows 10/11 on my new computer.
Watched your tutorial of the shotcut video editor and have been using for the past few days... It has been really working out well and really enjoying it... Thanks a lot!
When will I learn?! I could have saved 2 hours of reviewing video editing software simply by coming straight to you, Kevin. I really appreciate the clarity and quality of the information you provide and thank you. I sincerely hope that you are rewarded appropriately for the quality of your work.
Thank you for doing this!!!! Very concise and in depth, easy to understand for someone who is starting video editing! Such a gem âš
Kevin as always, you keep it professional and simple. Thank you so much for the tremendous help you give.
Thanks Kevin. I was looking for something to top and tail a video in a 16:10 ratio at 3840x2400. I went with Shotcut, because it just matched those settings when I added the video to the project. I'd not heard of Shotcut before (I don't usually work with video) so thank you so much for including it in your selection.
Hey Kevin, for starters your videos are amazing. It saved me unnecessary udemy payments for the same tutorials on visio, excel basics and a lot more. I am a youtuber too but more of a content creator in music. Your passion for youtube is really motivating for me, as I handle my passion and my profession together. 14 years in Microsoft sounds really interesting. I hope to grow like you someday! Regards, an engineer whos sings! :)
Kevin, you're one of the best resources I've ever found on the internet.
You are a thorough professional.
Great video! Thanks for showing the DaVinci software! Exactly the tool i need
I don't know why Kevin does have 1 million subscribers till now. Everyone just give him what he deserves .This is another great video . Lots of love from Kenya
Big thumbs up for that, so appreciative for his useful videos. Love from Kenya toođ
is it true in kenya its legal to ride motorcycles at tthe age of 12 o 15 cause my frien denim said before he moved he could

@@Tangoernie lol no but who would allow someone under 12 to ride a motorcyle? that's just dumb
@@Tangoernie nope
Another great video. I stumbled upon the Windows Video Editor by accident when trying to play back a video and decided to hit the edit in the drop down. Mind blown. It's great for beginner stuff and most importantly FREE and not on my phone.
Thanks. This was exactly what I was looking for. Content generators like you are an invaluable resource to CZcams.
Thanks for your time in reviewing these video editors. I think I prefer the Open shot editor, mainly for the easy learning curve.
One drawback to Shotcut is that the "Undo" doesn't affects anything happening in the filter.
For example I misplace a text and wants to move it back to its original position, If I press "Undo" it will undo things I change in the timeline not in the filter.
Note: It really stressed me out especially because I did mistakes a lot đ
Man just live with it, The engine is better than the usual pograms tbh.
none of them work everytime i edit a vdieo the video corrupts and i cant play it or upload it
@@GameNobz - Nah, it's a serious design flaw.
For anyone intrested: at the moment the people working on Shotcut are working on this feature. Perhaps the next bigger update will include the feature.
@@kiana.s_ hopefully
This is extremely helpful and shows that you really can leverage free tools to create just as good if not better work than paid tools. Awesome vid :)
Saving this for future reference. Thanks, Kevin!
Kevin, King of Tutorials! Seriously THE best tutorials hands down. You give the best info and make it easy to understand. Thank you! đŻ
Your presentation is top-notch. I really appreciate that you broke everything into chapters devoted to each individual option. I'm going for Da Vinci and subscribing.
Thanks for this, Kevin. I haven't worked with footage since WMM and Windows 7, so this is going to be new. So far, DR 17 is looking good. I'm fine with a steep learning curve. I tended to rely solely on jump cuts, to a lessor degree, the traditional fade. A great deal of planning went into those jump cuts though, and in some videos, I used them quite liberally. I'm not too far from replacing my old computer, and I'm looking forward to the editing process again. Can't wait! I'm getting excited! Video editing turned out to be a labor of love, and I truly miss it.
My video is amazing you one video
none of them work everytime i edit a vdieo the video corrupts and i cant play it or upload it
@@justaguywithapowerpole Try learning what you're doing then. It isn't all the programs that are the issue sport.
The only youtuber I would immediately check whenever I have questions!
Best soft soft tutorial for beginners on CZcams! I'm an absolute beginner and all the other tutorials I've found on CZcams have been so
ikr
Thank you, I've been trying to find a free video editor for awhile and this came to my rescue
Great work Kevin.. if someone quantified how much impact your work had on man-hours saved, it would be something huge..keep up the good work ..cheers !
what i like about this channel is that i just got done finding a free screen recording app a few seconds ago to exactly what i need
Can't believe i just found this. You rock. Thanks â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
Soooo thankful you made this video and put it out today! This will be so helpful to my students as the learn to make videos to market their craft on social media!!! You're tutorial videos are so helpful as we have transitioned all our students into Microsoft Teams. Thank you :)
congratulations fam!!!
I watched the full video on the Free Windows 10 video editor and it sounded like just what I needed and, as a beginner, I understood everything about it, which is surprising. I will be creating my first ever video and your explanation has sold me on the Windows 10, although I may be able to use Open Shot as well. Thanks for your clear explanation and encouragement
I never even realized it was on my newer W10 LAPTOP until I saw this video. I grasped the basics immediately after using it for one day. It was good enough for simple tasks.
This video gave me what I needed to get started with video editing. Thanks, Kevin.
Come heređ
Thanks Kevin! Your videos are informative and I can actually use them during my class discussions. God bless!
I went with open shot since Iâm not making anything too complicated. Thanks for the video mate
Love your stuff! Big help!
I have been using DaVinci Resolve for 9 months now. Itâs actually amazing how powerful it is, even compared with Filmora X paid and Premier Pro. One drawback i can note out is the transitions. There is a 60% the transition will go onto the clip. Other than that, great software. Totally will recommend people to use it!
@r0y9lty Hello did you manage to resolve this issue im looking to dowload this software
Has anyone resolved the issue with the password?
If so, some help would be greatly appreciated.
@@Avocadoosas i didnt have to put a password..?? either way try using your system password maybe itl work. no idea abt this error tho lol
My Davinci keeps crashing đ
there's a reason lots of people are switching from Premier Pro to DaVinci Resolve đ
Kevin you are the absolute best! So timely! Thank you!
you're a great teacher, love the simplicity, with details! subbed!
Thank you so much for this video. I am now reading to get start on my podcast. I will share.
Thank you Kevin for this informative video. I like that you point out the down sides of each so that I am prepared for the caveats. One thing that I would like is that you oint out what system requirements for each are. I have an old 32bit windows machine so cannot use something that is for 64 bit and it sometimes only comes to light after download.
Thank you for this excellent video Kevin. I was pulling my hair out trying to get Davinci Resolve to work on my poverty spec PC (and failing) as Iâve outgrown the Windows editor and wanted to improve my own videos, this has given me a few options to try đđ»
Thank you so much for the recommendations!
thanks for the help because I have really needed one.
Kevin your video content has always taught me something. I appreciate it keep up the great work.
I use Openshot its simple and serve the purpose. it has a few limitation which reminds me i am using a free video editor. but overall the satisfaction rate is 8/10, nice video mate. cheers
Thank you so much for a more informative, organized video. Extremely helpful to a newbie video editor.
Kinda wanted to start making more edited videos, this was really useful. Thanks!
I've tried most of these, but my favorite free editor is VideoProc Vlogger. Very powerful, very easy to use, and there are lotsa great tutorials out there. Amazed at what a free editor will let me do. Surprised it's not in your list.
Thank you for every tutorial Kevin!! More Power
Thanks! you're always giving out great information. You have helped me twice now and each time the very first thing you show is exactly what I needed. Keep up the great work.
Straight forward video, thank you so much!!! I donât see many of these videos around anymore
I had been using Premiere Pro and actually just discovered Davinci Resolve last year. It's amazing! So much faster and intuitive, better built-ins, just all around smoother and a pleasure to work with!
Great video, as always! Very informative, clear and to the point! Thanks! I will check your tutorial and try DaVinci Resolve
This was really helpful, thank you!
So useful! Thank you!
Good summary Kevin. I agree with your views however my personal choice is Shotcut. I like DaVinci Resolve but I do find that the limitations on what you can do a little frustrating. I am by no means an expert however. DaVinci Resolve I believe is from Melbourne Australia where I live and I should be supporting the local product but each to their own.
thank you, thank you, thank you. you are a LEGEND!!!!
cool video it helped out a ton with starting out and composing my first soft
Nice. Thanks for the share. I will try some of this video editor
Thank you so much, am a complete newbie and downloaded Camtasia as I had used it on license at work, so thought I would go with that. Started watching your tutorial on how to use Camtasia then saw on suggested videos 'this'one...a review if free editing software. As I had been JUST about to buy the Camtasia license I am now convinced a free software download will suit my needs. You have saved me ÂŁ200, thanks from a UK newbie to editing fan
Hi, another UK newbie hereâŠmay I ask what one you downloaded and how you find it? Iâve been using a combination of Windows Media and free (but very limited )editing apps on my phone and now want to actually start using a decent but free software so I can learn and make better vids.

Great content. I don't believe the learning curve is as important as does the Video Editor company back up the product with indepth tutorials. Thanks!
Thanks for this great video Kevin!
This helps me so much!
Good content. Well done on a great lead in the presentation.
Domestic, amateur, family video style editor myself. No aspirations to become anything else. Moviemaker back in the day was ahead of its time. Pitty MS sometimes lets things slip. Mobility is also important to me. My mobile far outway the old PC at home. Camera's Insta 360, GoPro, Mobile.
Nowadays I rarely just use a single app/ software. Insta 360 app editor to extract footage and some editing functions, Samsung mobile onboard vid editor to trim (while on Pub transport), Quick from GoPro sometimes, WIN10 Video Editor for 3D effects, Shotcut for video and sound combination (nice tool).
A special mention for a recently discovered software in MS store. Movie Maker 10. Still on a learning curve with this one.
Are you able to create a video in one app or program and then easily open it in a diff program on PC? Like to add additional flair; like lay in background audio, or splice in a screenshot or downloaded internet clip?
ShotCut to start with as a beginner sounds smart but may want to embellish, change or make improvements to a video later as experience grows with a more premium product like Davinci. Is it possible to pull the edited videos apart after being created with a mobile app and/or Shortcut?
@@SneekySecrets Hi, awesome for reaching out. The short answer to all your questions is yes. Because content is digital one can change and manipulate over and over.
To create edible content one can shoot in any platform these days. Once edible content on one device you can start your edit. That edit needs to be finalized/ exported 1st before you can use it in another software when confidence grows.
For instance in my case I'm useless with adapting or enhancing colour. When I get better PC that is able to run 4k and DaVinci that will be a skill I'll be keen to learn.
Best of luck.
Damn! Thank you man. I never even knew Widows 10 has an editing app
Instant subs. Youâre the best!
I always appreciate your content my brother. You seem very genuine. Thanks
Hey Kevin,
Thank you for the video editor compilation. It has saved me hours, if not days, in trying out various editors myself and picking one.
And Yes, you do sound robotic, but it's cool. Keep it that way.

Thank you so much! I really needed a editor but I couldn't find one. đ
Your welcome I have a class for video editing this Saturday 20# admission
I love your tutorials
Thank you đ. I'll go by what you currently use đ
Great video and clear introduction to the software. Thank you!
Which of these allows me to combine images with videos? Or make a slideshow of photos with music?
Thanks for these great options. I'm petrified of the whole idea, so I'll probably start with Open Shot...then if I get comfortable and feel the need for more power, maybe I'll switch. Appreciate your selections so much!
Well, the service isn't working well for me. Might be that my computer is older, but it's moving at very slow pace and I can't do anything to speed it up. So...will try something else.
@@rgc1600 I have a newer computer with a rtx 3070 and it barely worked for me as well

Thank you so much for this video! I will definitely use the shortcut app editor for my CZcams videos!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!
Awesome â€ïž Thanks :) Going to start with openshot !
Thanks Kevin for such a wonderful sharing. I had been struggling to look for a nice and valuable to kick start for a beginer. Great Job!

Thank you very much for another great video Kevin.
THANKS FOR THIS KEVIN! IT MADE MY VIDEO EDITING EASY
One huge drawback of ShotCut is the memory limitation. In an ordinary home PC, it constantly reminds that the memory is insufficient and the project either has to be abandoned or split into smaller parts. Making a video lasting over an hour is nearly impossible due to this memory shortage. Otherwise it is a great piece of software.

Really helpful overview, Kevin. Availability of instruction videos (CZcams) is so important - and you've been great on Excel stuff for me, so... Davinci Resolve is where I will go first.

Great info! Useful! Thanks! Can you do a video for free animation editors for non-animators?
I would also enjoy this đđ»đđ»
Iâve had blender for a while, so I guess open shots the best one for me
I use ShotCut.
I started with Premier Elements, couldn't get on with that at any level. Next came VSDC where I just could not understand enough of it to get going and too few tutorials available at the time. Looking around my short list back then was DV Resolve, Filmora and Shotcut.
I am now considering moving over to DV Resolve.
Informative and clear video by the way.
Thank you, wish I could see some of the preview of some of the effects/features to get an idea of what some can do. Great video again thank you for the information!!
Wow, thanks ! do you know if any of them can do side by side, split screen capablities
Hey Kevin. Great info. I've been using VSDC for about a year now for my channel. But I really want to try some of these others. Thanks for the info.

Hi Kevin - another very useful video. Can you make us one for LibreCAD please?
Yay Iâm here like immediately
Thanks a lot bro, helped me a lot in my own videos
Very useful, thank you!
kevin i currently make small music videos that i edit together with my dj music. which of these for ease of use and transition effects do you recomend? kdenlive or shotcut? my main concerns are ease of lining up shots to the music, lots of effects i can layer on top to go with the music and transitions. i currently use inshot on iphone which is very simple. but im looking to get on my pc and doing more.
let me know when you find the answer to this please
@@MidnightMotivation0 currently im just downloading both since theyre free and see wich one i can pick up the best for workflow
Kdenlive is to complex for an easy video editor.. I tried it for a few min then uninstalled it.
After the free version of video pad ends (idk how long it is) you cant export your videos anymore. So you might put in a lot of hours on a project just to realise after everythign is finished that you have to buy the full version to be able to export your video. Wouldnt recommend
Just lost 3 hours to this exact thing happening to me D:
Came here to find another editor so that doesn't happen to me again
Also, if you do buy the full version, it expires after the next update. So, I just wouldn't recommend it either.
OMG THANKS SO SO MUCH THIS HELPED!!!
Thanks!! Helpful.
