My grandfather took part in this raid. He was killed two months later against the same target. Listening to this makes me feel closer to him although he was killed 28 years before I was born.
What was his position on the plane?
Do you know how he died?
Within the last 5 years, I found 3 more Allied airmen who landed safely after bailing out, and were lynched by Germans. So research can still dig up things of importance.
There is a record kept, for all murders of all military killed illegally, after surrender. It was begun by a German, who died of cancer and another German has taken it over and expanded reference to all military, both sides
The 3 I found, so sadly, were likely killed by several German men, who murdered nobody knows how many, but the chap who keeps the records, knew immediately who likely did it.
They were reported by other Germans, and stood trial, and it only needed so many cases proved beyond doubt, for them to be hanged. So although the boys whose murders I reported did not have cases in court, because of the time and area of the murders, it is very likely they were just more victims of these German thugs.
There are some very, very sad and cruel stories to find, along with some astounding, joyful ones.
Every child in the land should have this played to them. Listening to these heroes who died for our freedoms. I feel utterly ashamed of our politicians and their police henchmen who have allowed Britain to be invaded by those who hate us where Adolf failed.
Oh dear , not the sharpest knife.
In your post you stated that Britain has been invaded. So my question to you is who has invaded us ?
Do try and keep up officer Dibble @@Dibley8899
God Bless these Boys! I raise a glass to their memory 🍻👍🏻😊
The greatest generation! No doubt about it....
proper heroes
Incredible, thank you so much for posting this.
Wynford Vaughan-Thomas was a wonderful storyteller, appearing in the seminal documentary series "World at War".
What men! Singing Annie Laurie (with relief) as they come in to land.
Good show lads.
Very polite conversation, is it perhaps that they're on the radio?
Amazing upload. Cheers mate
These guys must have been only early 20s but sound like middle aged men
There were men in mid 20's, in late 20's, a few in early 30's, too I believe one normal member of air crew was 38.
Sometimes senior officers would organise to fly a mission.
I do recall at least 2 lots of journalists died doing this same ridealong recording.
Facing death almost daily tends to evaporate youth.
Where is the real-time version of Deighton's "Bomber" that Radio 4 broadcast at some point in 1999 or thereabouts? One of ythe most terrifying things I think I've ever heard.
Yes, I’ve listened to that myself and enjoyed it each time. I think I ripped mp3s from library audio tapes once upon a time, so I’ll see if I can find them when I get a chance. Regards
Just checked; Essex libraries still have two copies of the audio book version for example…look for ISBN 9780857356543 or 9780563523550. Hope that helps
Is that where crew who bail out are surrounded by German people before any police & military get there and killed?
My grandmother . Grandfather and most of my extended family were on the receiving end ....
You got the whirlwind you sowed. It sadly took out so many good people, killed so many animals, but even if they survived the bombings, in places, German civilians were desperate enough to eat dogs, cats, rats that might have survived, too close to the end of the war..
But only after years of disabled, gypsies, gays, Jews, leftwing intellectuals, Poles, Russians, being starved and killed - and the plan was to wipe out all the Slavic peoples.
When they came for the Jews, I did nothing... In the end, they came for me...
as the observation goes...
There were actually a few Germans in the Luftwaffe that actually flew to England, saying they were ditching in the North Sea, flying low, to land in England and report to a CO, to say they were surrendering because they could not fight for Na zies. One waited to take a latest model of warplane to give the Allies, to help them.
All men had to pretend to be lost over the North Sea, to keep their family safe.
You know the story of The Great Escape? The horrendous end of 50 of the finest young men?
Do you know of the story of the Welsh Great Escape? Mass escape from a German POW camp in Wales? Surrounded by easygoing, helpful Welsh, who helped them start stolen cars, and made the story the sweetest comedy. Not one German killed and not one German able to escape Britain.
The only ugly part of the story is, earlier, at the POW camp, 2 young Germans actually announced they were glad they were out of the war. That Hi tler was evil, was destroying Germany... and they were murdered by fellow inmates.
That is why the right side won
As were families in Guernica, Warsaw, Rotterdam, London and Coventry. Politicians declare war, brave men fight it and civilians die.
According to background noise, it sounds like the whole thing was recorded in a studio with some additional background airplane noise. The Lancaster engines were so loud audio recording wouldn't be possible.
One generation does amazing things, and another generation doubts them.
The pilot was Squadron Leader Letby DSO on this sortie who flew a total of 84 bombing Ops and in the Korean War was awarded the DFC.
@@anthonyeaton5153 How do you do 84 missions and survive? He must have had nerves of steel.
And the moon landings were recorded in a studio. And America is being run by a cabal of paedophiles working out of a pizza restaurant in DC. And..
Oh please, can nobody replace Dan Snow???? he is like a stuck record when it comes to history programming!!!!
These men were actually boys. So young yet so brave. Living conditions at the Air bases were cold and uncomfortable, food was rubbish. They saw their friends blown out the sky but kept on flying night after night. Massive respect.
