- Ah, the hype train. We promise ourselves every time it rolls into the station that we won’t be suckered into buying a ticket. Alas, for every game we’re excited for that ends up living up to our lofty expectations, there are probably a dozen more that leave us wishing we’d never bothered with them, and for our list today, we’re looking at the titles of 2022 that were the biggest let downs of the lot. Here are the 10 Most Disappointing Games of 2022!

Don't forget that Wonderlands had 4 DLCs that can be summarised as "play a single, short dungeon with no story and an easy boss at the end" for each and every one of them.

Wonderlands ain't a bad game but it's not a Main line BL game
@Blizzy 130 it doesn't matter that it's not a main BL game. It was a full retail game. It had a good concept, but poor execution. The Legendary gear was lacklustre, the story was boring and the DLC was the single most insulting thing ever. The Pre-Sequal was a way better experience than Wonderlands, and that game pretty much was responsible for shutting down 2K Australia.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands met my expectations exactly, given the current state of Gearbox. Fun gunplay, mid-to-mediocre writing, cool character skins, and terribly priced DLCs.

I think Mario Strikers: Battle League deserved to be on this instead of Nintendo Switch Sports. Everyone knew what they were getting with Switch Sports. But Mario Strikers is a beloved franchise with the original developers onboard once again. And yet it had a significantly cut roster, no single player campaign and no 4v4, among other weird changes.
I don’t understand the hate for Tiny Tina it was a lot of fun and was just as advertised.
I put more hours on bl3 than any game of the last generation and was so excited for wonderlands, and I still can't finish it. I have no idea why there's just something missing. I can't stand it

I think it’s because you can basically get the same experience playing Borderlands 3, except that game has more features. People just wanted more then it offers
Honestly it's the Teen rating. I wasn't crazy about Tina's when I played it, definitely had SOME moments that made me laugh and the gameplay is just as enjoyable as Borderlands, but no blood/gore makes the combat feel weightless and the humor dries up faster than a Shamwow on Grandma's downstairs.

Absolutely amazing visuals. It wasn't at all what I was expecting in the slightest. It's a great tour through a Geiger inspired world though, so I guess there's that?

Sadge to see Ghostwire on the list, really enjoyed it, lovely way to get to know more about Japanese ghost stories and general culture by playing. Didn't mind the old Ubisoft style of unlocking watchtowers, it was fun to zip around tokyo.
Arkham Knights on the other hand though, I had no expectations for, it's just another entry in the series so it was always gonna be mid.
OW 2 was pretty deserved, it all went down hill since its announcement and even before, Jeff leaving, stuff being removed, microtransactions being added, OW 2 has been dead from the beginning.
I too loved Ghostwire, though to be fair if you don't have an interest in Japan or Yokai folklore, I can see why people wouldn't play it. But disappointing? They marketed the game solely on those two things, and it delivered both better than any other game Ive seen. People expected it to be something they never said it would be, then ripped it to shreds.
even if you were to discredit it down to simply a _novelty_ game to play on ps5, the combat loop alone is absolutely sooo much fun and worth finishing the game for. the culture and world-building layered on top was absolutely brilliant to me as well ^-^ kinda expected it to lean a little more into horror but *loved* it nonetheless!
I think with Ghostwire, a more interesting game was in development before its director left.

I'm personally missing Darktide. Gameplay is good, but the stuff surrounding it...
They could easily make this a 26 week miniseries and still not cover all of the broken, buggy and just plain terrible games from 2022.
What would those extra 10 games be?
This is why I haven't preordered a game in over a decade.
I preorder all my games; after 30 years of experience playing them, 99% of the time I can tell a game I'm gonna enjoy and one that will be relatively but free a mile away.

I love when people review nintendo games. Its online play never works good enough and when it does its too much.
I found that a weird criticism too. Can you imagine the outcry if Switch Sports was local multiplayer only?
@@Galo994 I haven't personally played Switch Sports but the local multiplayer was what made the original huge. Then with the Switch being the perfect console for local multiplayer it was rather disappointing
lol no not nostalgia. Wii sports is over 16 years old and was free, played better and had more content. Switch added online but you can't play on a team with friends. Nobody wants to wear a leg strap. I don't know how they messed it up so bad
I remember TripleJump giving Saints Row a positive review at the time, but I could tell they didn’t want to talk too much about it’s negatives while also not wanting to lie about it.
I think they enjoyed the bugs but realise that there shouldn't be so many.
Probably a paid review. Paid to not be honest.
@@danbauer3669 They usually have to declare if it's sponsored content. I'm pretty sure on the podcasts they have basically said it is a fun but broken game. they have definitely laughed about some ridiculous bugs they have found.
CAN'T argue with that number 1 spot, boy. *Jeez.* That is BY FAR the most disappointing release of, not _just_ 2022, but honestly, probably the last couple of years, period.
After Agents of Mayhem too, it's not just disappointing in and of itself as an open world game AND a Saints Row sequel/reboot, but "Strike Two" for Volition - a studio I once really liked. I still love Saints Row 3/4/Gat Outta Hell (I know some people like to argue amongst those, but who cares? They roll into each other perfectly; just play all of them and consider them one incredible title), and a lot of Volition's classics like Freespace 2. But it's clear that those all came from a different studio; too much talent seems to have left the studio, and who's there now just isn't getting the job done.
The current state of the studio is pretty sad to see; I'm not surprised Deep Silver washed their hands of 'em and gave Volition away to Gearbox to manage after the whole debacle of Saints Row '22. I'm bummed out by it, but not surprised. Whatever they do next _really_ needs to be good again... _IF_ they're even allowed to make their own game again. I can see Gearbox just using them as a support studio, to be honest.
I read a little about Scorn, I guess it didn't have a story. So, this game was a $60.00 demo?
The thing I love about this is that it's not about the worst games. Just the ones which were the most disappointing when compared to the hype pre-release.
I guess I'm low hanging fruit but I enjoyed Gotham Knights, Tiny Tina's Wonderland, and Ghostwire Tokyo
How did Callisto Protocol not make this list?
I loved the new Wonderlands. Many hated it because of Tiny Tina or the crappy DLC that came out for it. The main game though is great. Mind you I don't care for the D&D type stuff normally. But I enjoyed it in this games setting.
The d&d stuff was really cleverly written and enjoyed that game a lot

From a hype/delivery ratio, Callisto Protocol was the most disappointing of 2022.
I do feel that a third of this list, as well as Callisto Protocol, are examples of games that were “good enough”. Obviously that’s the curse of the hype train, but I do think we as gamers need to remember that sometimes 7s and even 6s can scratch certain itches better than some 10s.
The problem is that the modern internet gives us CONSTANT insight into game development. I remember being a kid with the PSX and N64 and the first time you heard about a game would be the first advert on TV or in a magazine. There might be a review in one of those magazines right before the game's release too, but generally your first impression of it was when you physically played it (or a demo of a build close to release).
Now there's constant pictures and videos teased, paired with scant factual information, or the dev overestimates what they can do. The imagination runs wild, the product releases, and ultimately disappoints.
“Good enough” doesn’t justify a $60-70 price tag though
I get what you mean, but at the same time, if you're paying them the usual AAA price, the game has to be more than a 6 or 7. Might as well wait for a sale.
Lolno. Callisto Protocol fails completely at being scary or atmospheric in any way. Instead it's a repetitive whack-a-mole with generic-ass "zombies". A real letdown from the supposed creators of a masterpiece like Dead Space.
The remake of XIII should be on this list.
To me its Call of duty Modern Warfare II
- The menu looks like a Hulu subscription service
- The perk system is terrible
-the weapon progression system is horrible
-Dead silence makes an audio sound when activated so it alerts nearby enemies of your presence
-there's no perk or attachments that can help you with reveal distance at long range
And the only good thing about the game right now is the "invasion multiplayer mode" and that's it
I'll be honest the fact that Blizzard even entertained the idea of presenting what they put out as a sequel is hilarious, and I never fell for it one bit. To the point that it's weird to see it in a list like this because to me it really is just a game update, not a sequel.
5v5 is a big change in how the game plays, sure, but not any bigger than 2:2:2 and role queue being added (arguably smaller), and that was a game update, so... it's an update, the sequel thing is pure marketing crap.
I was hoping Gotham Knights would be as good as Arkham Knight. Underwhelmed.
If I had a nickel for every time KOTOR II has been rushed to release solely to capitalize on the success of the first game and came out buggy as hell despite the devs doing their absolute best with what little time they had, I'd have two nickels.

Yep, with the choices I actually played that were on your list, namely Scorn and Tiny Tina.
Scorn had little to hold me as a player beyond the visual aesthetic, therefore I didn't care what happened to my character, and because I did not care for my character the motivation to continue dried up quickly.
Tiny Tina on the other hand, well, that came close to the heights of Borderlands 2, but what cost this game was the abundance of treasure, which even the devs thinks what makes Borderlands a good game. However since you are constantly being bombarded with gear, you often have to stop the flow of the game to see whether what you just picked up is better then what you already have, which when it happens nearly after each combat session can become tiresome.
I played the new Saints row expecting it to be a horrible game, and some how I was still disappointed. I can honestly say I was not disappointed in all the other games on the list. Because I had no interest in any of them. So I did not buy or play them.
You should do this for every year

Saints row 4 is a legitimately great game. It's tons of over the top fun, funny, stupid and crazy. It's still a great game today, almost 10 years after it's release. I'm replaying it atm. Hard to believe how bad they got it wrong with the reboot.
Last year I replayed the entire series and had a great deal of fun doing so.
No interest whatsoever in the new game.
wii sports isn't all nostalgia. Keep in mind it was free so people expected little more than a gimmick to show off the motion controls. The expectation was incredibly low especially given the gaming world's numerous failed attempts at motion control (kinect?)
OW2 devs decided to gives free currency if you grind the game, but then they decide to differentiate the currency so you gotta buy BP each season with real money.. fuck blizzard..
I don't think Nintendo Switch Sports was disappointing in my opinion. I even tried out the beta and enjoyed it! Hoping to get the game soon tho. 👀
What was disappointing was the lack of sports. Having only 6 sports at launch was a huge disappointment for me atleast, and I feel with this coming out 16 years after the original it should've had a bit more modes, especially for it's price tag

Saying wonderlands was a dissapointment is an understatement.
I think the most disappointing thing about Tina's Wonderland is the character creator. It touts the freedom of making your own character, but honestly, I don't think it goes far enough. No matter how ugly you make your freaky human look, they're ALWAYS going to have human in their design. If you want an anthro or anything truly inhuman, then tough s#$@.
As dusk falls was really good and currently we're trying to get all the achievements it was not disappointing at all
Rainbow Six Extraction. For the exact same reason as Tiny Tina Wonderland. A standalone game spawned from a one off event in Seige nearly a decade ago. Went through numerous delays and still came out feeling even more lifeless and unnecessary than its original. And considering they largely used the exact same operators, skills, and assets, it felt like a cobbled together cash grab that performed worse than its original and died just as quick as it hit the market.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is the dumbest complaint I've heard, sure it has issues but it's nothing that a sequel or DLC couldn't fix. The devs expressed their interest for one.
Gotham Knights was actually really good as a stand alone, it's just more annoying seeing every reviewer compare it to Arkham and give it hate for that with their response being "they did Origins"... Yeah, in 9 months.
How the hell did The Callisto Protocol dodge this shit list? That steaming pile of donkey excrement was hyped as the next big Dead Space experience - DEFINITELY the biggest disappointment of 2022 for me, and many others. Also, I think Horizon FW and GoW Ragnarok could have easily made this list too and pushed out a couple of the weaker selections...
GOW was fan nominated for game of the year....

I can't remember the last game I was hyped for, because I have a functioning memory of the last five to ten years in the gaming industry.
I’m going to add another voice to the ‘You were wrong about Wonderlands’ chorus. Terrible DLCs maybe, but the core game - the gunplay, the spells, the builds - was a lot of fun, and I personally enjoyed the story.
Triple Jump don't play games, look at the top right the entire video, it's 100% ripped off footage from other channels.
I think it's hilarious they could have got around the Overwatch 2 thing by adding a decimal and a 0 on the end... Overwatch 2.0 ...not a new game, the tiny bit of implication added there just means it's a big ol' update, which is literally what it was.
The only game from 2022 that interested me was Elden Ring. Which is a shame as I'm not good enough to play it even past the first boss.
So for me - every single AAA game of 2022 was disappointing, because I either didn't want them - or couldn't play them

The DLC HAS been disappointing. Because Borderlands has such a high bar for it.
But the main game was dope as hell I don’t normally disagree that passionately with TJ takes but this ones bad, that game is very good like extremely good unless you were expecting literally the best the series has ever seen (frankly the shooting itself is arguably the tightest the series HAS ever seen)
Shit like The Avengers is disappointing
The Avengers would have been disappointing if it wasn't exactly what I thought from the second I heard it was coming out. It nailed my expectation of being a garbage cash in game full of microtransactions. I would have been disappointed if I was fool enough to expect it to be good.
My best advice: ignore the hype train. Who cares what others think? It's what you think that matters. Most of the people telling you "that new thing that you haven't played yet is so great" are just dishonest salesmen, the scum of the Earth. Like, if you've seen that Marvel Snap commercial with the guy "I am so excited..." he is the exact kind of trash salesman I'm talking about. F××× those people. Please yourself, not them.

Dont understand the naming convention of naming a game EXACTLY the same as an already prior released game by a studio. Im certain the amazing game PREY (2017) would have been so much more successful if the just went with something else.

A near decade of waiting and 5 years of development just for PS2 graphics and a story written by someone who was apparently born after the game was announced.

It pains me to say it but in retrospect there were a wealth of disappointing games in 2022. Maybe it was because having purchased a PS5 on Day One there still weren’t enough games that really yelled “next-gen” and too often new titles were still being released on PS4 but other than Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok no games really resonated with me that much and, especially come Q4, we were bombarded with forgettable failures like Gotham Knights and The Callisto Protocol. Having succumbed to both of them I can only agree with your views regarding GK and say that despite decent enough visuals it wasted too much potential and ended up an overly repetitive grindathon with a serious identity crisis. Meanwhile Callisto Protocol was just a nice looking waste of effort that left me thinking someone had pitched a Dead Space successor but then given up mid development and just pushed out an empty unfinished game with boring, frustrating combat and an end boss doomed for embarrassing obscurity and laziness.
I’d also agree with Ghostwire Tokyo a game that certainly had potential but ended up just feeling like a tech demo of a pretty Tokyo simulator with a few gameplay moments thrown in to justify calling it a game. Repetitive gameplay, repetitive enemies, repetitive missions and a mind numbing amount of collectibles meant after a boring grindathon fir the Platinum I deleted the game and only now remembered it came out only last year …
If you are triggered by stronger content, don't consume it. No need to water it down for others. In fact, it is anti-social to expect society to destroy the enjoyment of the many for a few.

I personally can't wait to play scorn I think it looks like something that may be considered a horror classic in a few years. The art styles insane and it's the right level of body horror to be truly disturbing

To criticize Scorn on its atmosphere and not even mention the lackluster combat is baffling. The setting is the setting, you can hardly cram in a sunny forest level in the middle of the game.

One of my game ideas is a spin off to Mario series where Luigi is a karate master, and another game idea is a remake and sequel to Miitopia with more classes, more customizations, content, etc.

I guess you can still be disappointed that they were bad, but not surprised.
9/10 games releases (especially AAA titles) are so obviously bad these days that I barely even buy games anymore.
Makes me feel like an old man to say it, but I miss the good old days where games were made to be fun, not to suck your wallet dry or hypocritically preach to you.
I did ghost ghost wire Tokyo. I didn’t like the bullet sponginess of the game
I had no interest in Wonderlands, mostly because I've gotten tried of the Borderlands franchise after 3
I got a platinum in Gotham knights , an even then I'd say it was just alright,
They really had an opportunity to make an unforgettable game but the memorable parts of the game is the mostly repetitive gameplay, you level up way too fast / get xp for just talking to NPCs ,
I played it on hard difficulty an the difficulty spike only got difficult Because they think difficult gameplay is fighting waves of the same looking goons ,
I'm a big fan of the Arkham games an there's the same problem with repetitive goons to fight but at least the gameplay and story was satisfying and groundbreaking for the time ,
Let's hope the new suicide squad game is better !
Also not enough villains !!! Like You have four main characters to play as an there are only a handful of note worthy villains you face , Harley Quinn , Mr freeze , manbat ( which mind you to get the platinum you have to face multiple )

And yes you can face penguins goons I guess but there was a lack of villain representation for this game , didn't really feel like the steaks were high when I was playing,
In Arkham City for example there's The joker of course , bane, Mr freeze , poison ivy , penguin , Ra's Al Ghul , Mad hatter , Two face , Solomon Grundy ,
And then you can even play as Catwoman
Bayonetta 3 was my biggest disappointment of 2023. A series known for a near rock solid 60fps, instead frame rate was all over the place. Graphics looked terrible, and that’s before the camera inevitability went up the arse of some giant enemy and you’re stuck looking at a dithered mess. Camera was flawless in the first two games, awful in 3. Character performances were flat and lifeless, mostly. Viola’s voice actress did great, but it was spoiled by bad motion capture. Horribly designed AI; passive lame enemies suck and the game is full of them. The game felt like an imposter, and toxic; as if the working conditions were just terrible for the project and it was embedded in the final product. Massive, heartbreaking disappointment.
I was so hyped for Scorn but boy was i disappointed, didn't have a clue on what i should be doing and there was no inkling of what i should do either! Looks great though.
Overwatch 2 is just an idea in my eyes. It doesn't actually exist

I think the main criticism was that the miis weren't the main characters, rather the main people being created just for the game. From what I heard people said they looked more generic compared to the iconicness of the miis
I loved Tiny Tinas Wonderland! It was exactly what was advertised. Loved it!
I agree that most of the game was pretty good. However the postgame and especially the DLC was pretty bad when compared to the mainline borderlands games. That alone can justify it being a disappointment.

Overwatch 2 launch was awful, couldn't play the game after 2 days.
But yeah, the prices for skins and bundles are OUTRAGEOUS. 40 dollars for a bundle? Who in their right mind would pay for that?
I still enjoy the game and play a lot, but I haven't bought a new skin since it's release. I've only got the battle pass to get at least some new cosmetics

Difference between Wii Sports and NSW Sports is Wii Sports was a free pack-in game where as NSW Sports isn't.
Ghostwire Tokto and Tiny Tina were both damn good, Scarlet and Violet should've been on this list instead.
I dont have a p5 but i still wanna play tokyo, I definitely agree pokemon should be on the list. I diddnt play it nor do i want to but it looks like hot dog shit. Arceus might be my last pokemon game if this is the way Nintendo is going to do there fans

Personally, my biggest disappointment last year was Soul Hackers 2, which felt more like a mediocre SMT knockoff than an official part of the series. It managed to completely ignore everything good Atlus had achieved with P5 and SMT5, to provide a dull, lifeless, grindy throwback to some of the worst parts of PS2-era JRPGs. Even the storytelling was clunky and unengaging.
How the hell isnt callisto protocol on this list. It was way more disappointing than wonderland.
BOTW for me was disappointing. First couple of hours was fun but just got bored thereafter and saw through it. Love 2D Zelda and OOT but this huge open world in BOTW just didn’t work for me.
Switch sports was disappointing because Wii sports was a free pack in with more content. Switch sports didn't even have golf at launch and when we finally got it.... It was the same as wii sports? Not even new levels added. For $60. I'll just bust out my Wii lol

I feel like Wonderlands and New Tales should've been switched: Wonderlands may just be more of a serviceable same, but New Tales is genuinely one of the worst games ever released.

don't agree at all with you about as dusk falls. i really like the stories. and how the lay out of the game was. and that you could see how other players picked their ways in the different stories possible in the game. and that you do some interaction in the game
