Mission Hill was the ur example of a show that was on the wrong network for the wrong audience. If anything, it deserved the same treatment Home Movies got, being completely rescued from a channel that didn't know what it was doing to a cable channel where that exact tone of show would have been more welcome. MH had NO business being on the WB, but would have been a perfect fit for Comedy Central right along side Dr. Katz, or if adult swim was more established at the time.
Brings me back to remembering "Kitty Bobo" from the What A Cartoons Lineup and remembering how surprised I was that the show followed a bunch of young adults rather than kids or teens and how interesting that perspective was. Alas, from what I heard, it did win the contest, but was sabotaged by the network because they didn't know how to market it, so they went with KND.
@@motherplayer As a KND fan, I'd unfortunately call that a canon event. But CN had a strong kid's demographic, so it would take years for a successful show about young adults to take off, Regular Show obviously. And I still am amazed it was on their main line up instead of being an [as] show.

I miss The WB.😢 Baby Blues is one of those I love the most and it's one of those products that made me want to make an adult animated sitcom that is calm, slighty family-friendly, and lighthearted just like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Daria, Bob & Margarete, Home Movies, Bob's Burgers, The Great North, and Central Park.
actually i think that is one of the reasons why tumbleweed is really dangerous, they are rolling pokie dry brush that catch fire easily because they are just a bunch of dry twigs. so putting them under the car so they get caught in the drive shaft and from the friction catch fire along with the potential oil under the car yeah makes a lot of since actually.

I always wondered why I never watched more of these shows but over time I forgot about them. Now I know. THEY HARDLY MADE ANY EPISODES. I am full of nostalgia, and anger at the same time. Mainly because there isn't any more of these shows. 😢 Great video though!
I'm glad to hear Baby Blues getting the love (or at least like) it deserves. For years it was basically a punching bag of a show that was compared negatively to Family Guy, and an insult to the comic strip. And yes, it is a cartoon that was very much a product of the late 90's-early 00's adult animation boom. But there was a lot of heart to go along with the adult comedy and there was a lot of familial love in this series. Oblongs and Mission Hill both became cult hits long after they ended, but Baby Blues just got completely forgotten at best. Though I wonder if The PJ's counts since it did originate on Fox and just migrated to WB. I remember when they had an episode with Jackie Chan in it and they used it to promote the Kid's WB Jackie Chan Adventures cartoon. Talk about your wild demographics swing.
The tumbleweed bit might sound farfetched but I can believe it. My sister's boyfriend drove through a field and got dry grass stuck to his axles. And they caught fire! I was the one who pointed it out, and this was the first time I met him too. "Oh hi! Your truck is on fire!". Tumbleweeds are super dry and he probably forced them into his engine block.

Alright, Mission Hill! That series was way ahead of its time in style and scope, I recently attended an event featuring the creators at a townhouse and there was much in discussion to be had with the series and its influences, MH still stays unique of its style and substance up to now. I noticed something, the BG's of MH is lightly akin to Jackie Chan's Adventures BG design. Invasion America, I spent nights watching this on its original airing, I thought it was going to air on Kids wb and that was a prime time sneak peek. There was also one more, the 3rd season of The PJs, but I guess it was transfered from Fox and not a true The WB original.
The WB and UPN had a lot of imported shows from other networks. That's what partly contributed to their fast rise. Fox rise in the 90s gave them the keys to success and they went after much of the same blue collared, urban, teen and kids audience. And in some aspects they catered to some of those demo's even better than Fox.
I found out about the Oblongs when I was staying at my friend Aidan’s house when we were kids, and we stumbled upon it on Adult Swim when we were surfing channels (back when it would air reruns on that channel). I was intrigued by it and I ended up watching some episodes where it was pretty funny tbh. I stumbled upon Mission Hill when watching a video in 5th grade, and I ended up falling in love with the show. It sucks both shows got cancelled early. If they were brought back today they would be instantly popular. I hope your next video will be you talking about both Star Wars Clone Wars shows (2003 and 2008 respectively), and discussing why you think the 2003 one is better as I’m a fan of both shows (even if I was born in 2003 😂).
Bro you know mission hill was the goat when it could have been released today and it would still do numbers Had to add this in an edit, that bit about early struggling artists hit home man. I work two jobs and am practically at work more than I am home. Every day I just think about how I wanna be writing and as soon as I get home I play some video games. The struggle is incredibly real
I hear you, man. Best of luck with your writing. I am an animator trying to finish my pilot. I have tried to get myself into the habit of doing at least a small amount every day. Even if its 20 mins, one or 2 drawings. I always end the day feeling like ive at least gotten that little bit closer to the dream
You have no idea how rare it is for me to hear anybody talk about Invasion America. I use to watch that show when it was still on tv! It had a slow burn yea but the pacing was pretty solid for a mini series. Heck at one point I almost thought it was a fever dream but I know what I saw was real.
I actually kind of liked Andy a bit more than Kevin in that Mission Hill show. He's not lazy. He's actually dedicated and overworked to exhaustion. He pays his rent and he can have sex with any Borg cosplay nerdy girl he wants and buy any musical useless device he wants because it's his damn place and his paycheck money. Kevin actually ticked me off when it came to those episodes. I really wanted to root for Kevin but he just had a way of ticking me off with his stereotypical insecure pandering of nerd culture at the time.
I’m glad you mentioned the backgrounds in the oblongs always thought they were amazing. weird to think if wb hadn’t won the bidding war that the backgrounds would’ve looked completely different they always stood out to me as classic wb style 😊
This was such an great walk down memory lane. As you've already said, we liked these shows as kids but come to appreciate them so much more as adults. Especially Mission Hill. It's even better that these have DVD releases which I'm proud to own. These cartoons were truly a part of a generation, and I'm glad to be apart of it. Stay frosty my guy👓
I'll never forget Mission Hill & Oblongs! I still owned them in my adult cartoons collection, right next to Clone High, Duckman, Clerks, The Critic and Wait till your father gets home! They were great shows and are still awesome to this day! Hopefully they get more recognition on this and other channels reviewing them because the network shills sure don't appreciate them! Especially for my boy Mission Hill! King of the Groobermeister! 😂 ❤
Dude. Thank you so much. I’m 33 and I’ve been feeling really nostalgic the past few years and I’ve been re watching the cartoons of my youth. I pretty much caught up to everything. I’m either wanted to watch cover to cover or thought I saw, but never saw but this last show that you talked about in your video I was starting to think was just a made up memory. I am stoked to try and find this thing. Thank you again for reconnecting me to my past!!!
there was something about the oblongs that REALLY resonated me as a poor and neurodivergent kid-- i saw a lot of myself in milo, and liked that a character like him was the protagonist and his equally weird friends were always along for the ride mission hill is one of the comfiest shows, every time i caught it i just got such lovely vibes. the energy and the art style and everything work together really well
Invasion America, was 12 when it came out. I'm almost 40 and still think about this unfinished master piece. It left on such a cliff hanger. It was truly yosh
mission hill was released at the same year i started college, couldn't have arrived at a better time the vibe, mood really captures the demands and at times laidback moments of adult life
okay. so about the tumbleweed part... it's dry and hot there as is. and in a chase you push the car's engine, which makes it hot. tumbleweed being dry and flammable, you can hear the wheels scraping against them, while they are stuck under the car. so they catch on fire, which in tandem with the hot engine make the cables and fuel-tubes catch on fire under the hood. all the more easier, since the air intake meant to cool the motor will fuel it with air. and ofc you stop and get out, if you see your car catching on fire. goes to show the dude has a good head on his shoulder to look at tumbleweeds and connect the dots about it being dry and flammable, using it to stop a car.
To be honest, I was introduced to all three shows from Baby Blues to The Oblongs through Adult Swim when I was between 8 and 9 and I loved all of them, there were fun to watch along with Home Movies and Cowboy Bebop. I never actually seen them on the The WB because we didn't have The WB and Kids' WB at the time when it was first airing, same goes to the first season of Pokemon on TV locally here when I never seen them until I was 8. All these three shows deserve better.
I too would like to see the lost season of Baby Blues. Reminds me of the legendary Dexter's laboratory episode, Dexter's Rude Removal. Maybe one day it will be uncovered and shown to the public
The whole tumbleweed bit actually isn't far fetched at all. Any dry brush stuck in the engine bay or against the exhaust which gets around 800 - 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, can combust. Tumbleweeds also catch fire extremely easily :p
Remember not every show gets picked up by an affiliate. So, some shows that might be a network show, may not have aired in a region. The perfect example of this is "Rude Dog" [1989] in my area, the affiliate refused to air it.
My first time watching this creator, I enjoyed the vid. When he mentioned Con Air coming on right after the kids block I audibly said "That's how I first saw it!".
I liked baby blues and Mission Hill. It showcased how new parenting is hard but it’s worth it for your kid, and Mission Hill is perfect cause it’s speaks to adults who graduated college/or in high school and are stuck with finding themselves
Mission Hill was and still is one of THE MOST amazing animated series ever made! im one of the fortunate owners of the full DVD box set. though it lacks the original licensed music, its still amazing to this day. i remember seeing ads for it on the WB back in the late 90s and was DYING to watch the show. didnt happen until it came on Adult Swim in the 2000s... and to this day, im still hooked on it (being 41). the few storyboard episodes that have popped up on CZcams are so much fun to see as the writers of the show were really pushing to keep constant evolution of the characters going. its just really too bad that its following didnt hit until well after the show was finished.
Need to point out that the algorithm brought me here, it's not ALWAYS evil. You have yourself an amazing channel, dude. I work from home and watch a lot of long form content, and this video made me smile. Keep up the good work, man! Definitely going to check out your Patreon.
This video was amazing to watch! These are my old favorites! And you presented them exceptionally well! Great work and thank you for the deep dive!!! ❤
Mission Hill was legendary! Love the Kafkaesque reference, too. You're clearly already doing well with your sub count, but I foresee you growing super fast.
Heya! I just found your channel in my recommended! I must say, right of the bat I ADORE your style of editing and the way you talk about these shows! As someone who also loves late 90's/early 2000's media, it's always refreshing to see someone make these videos and do it right! ♥ You and Pan Pizza seriously know what's up and I'm so glad I came across your channel! Much love! ♥
Was it just me, or did the Shakira music video of 'Hips don't lie' play right after Yugioh on the CW 4 kids? This must've been like 2006. Trust me. I never forgot Shakira's hips 😳
I remember the primetime animated shows that aired on The WB such as Mission Hill, Baby Blues and The Oblongs and UPN had two animated series such as Dilbert and Home Movies. Cartoon Network picked up Home Movies, Baby Blues, Mission Hill and The Oblongs and aired it on it’s nighttime block adult swim between 2001-2004/2005
Loved the video, the first 3 cartoons were some of my favorites in college. I remember Baby blues on adult swim and watching Mission Hill on CZcams. Classic
man watching this really makes me wanna revisit mission hill. i didn't realize as a kid just how gorgeous of a cartoon it is. something about a lot of stuff from the 2000s, the bold line work, the pinks and greens and purples...think gorillaz. it was just a whole vibe, and i've been sorta seeing it make a comeback lately. that style definitely inspired my own work i've been doing lately.
I'm so glad that I watch this video because I've been trying to figure out what the name of mission Hill was for so long because I can remember watching the first episode but I could never Google it properly to find it thank you
We didn’t have WB when the first three shows were airing because we only had satellite where I lived, but I got to see them when Adult Swim picked them up a few years later and they become some of my favorite animated shows. All three are pretty unique among adult animation and I would love to see another Baby Blues or Mission Hill-style show again someday. (Undergrads too)
I saw Invasion America when it first debuted. Was such a shame that it didn't have a lasting impression, because having watched it kinda feels like a dream now. A fragment of a memory lives on in my mind, a part of my teenage years growing up with the WB content block. I definitely remembered watching all of the shows talked about; thanks for helping me recall the good ol' times 😄
I watched all these on adult swim when the channel first got on cartoon network. I had no idea what I was watching but I grew to love all the shows very quickly. You know these shows are underrated when even a 6 yr old likes it lol
The Oblongs was before Will Ferrell was HUGE. Its the same for Stephen Colbert. He did voice work for adult swim shows and was even in strangers with candy. Then the Colbert Report took off and he exploded
Me and some friends started rewatching Mission Hill and MY GOD we related more the Andy and his friends more than before. As for Invasion America? Yeah, this is so obscure that even the usual guys that covered obscure animation haven’t covered it.
in canada 2001-2003, we had a channel called "teletoon" and they would play all in one block "the detour"....mission hill, the oblongs, undergrads, clone high..... it was the best
I would say if Adult Swim premiered a little sooner the WB shows would have lasted much longer but then again their shows were made on the cheaper side thus no money to renew the shows. Maybe that's why Home Movies was renew thanks to its art style. Who knows? In the age of reboots/revivals, the WB shows can only rely on luck if the higher ups are interested enough to bring them back; the only question would be where to put them?
Yeah, the Invasion America thing was kinda odd. In 2016 Universal ended up buying out DreamWorks Animation making NBC/Universal or Comcast the owners of Invasion America. Which is funny because back in 1993 Universal Animated Studios run by Jeff Siegel tried to make a mature animated TV series of their own called Exosquad. And got Playmates to make the toys for them. And mostly mild violence because Exosquad was put into the Saturday Morning Cartoon timeslot, But that didn't stop the huge amount death scenes or the extremely adult subjects like War is Hell, racism, the horrors of war, and losing loved ones in war. And all anyone talks about is those toys these days. And people still think Playmates made Exosquad even though Exosquad was created under Universal Animated Studios, and as of 2016 was merged with DreamWorks Animation which means that DreamWorks Animation now owns Exosquad and Invasion America. And they don't want anybody to know about it. Exosquad is on the Peacock streaming service under the kids section but not Invasion America. And neither is on NBC/Universal or Comcast is on their European streaming service Sky Network. Oh, and Jeff Siegel was immediately fired from Universal Animated Studios right when Exosquad which ran for two seasons.
Mission Hill kills me because I didn't understand what was funny about it as a kid, and the first time I watched as an adult it was instantly one of the most relatable things i'd ever seen. It's crazy how perfectly they hit their target demographic-- Also it's wild that all the subcultures and personality types in the show are still extremely relevant. For example, the Libertarian Vampire. How the fuck have I met that guy in real life (and under a nearly identical circumstance)? It's so specific lmfao. Great show
Omg i LOVE your channel and I LOVE your little avatar/mascot dude paired with your voice and it’s all overwhelmingly CUTE I just wanna hug youuuu 🥰😇🥰😇 I’ll be binging your channel Venture Bros has me nostalgic for old toons :3
1st time ever seeing one of your videos... excellent... Also 33:43 is the beginning of the best part of this video... And while I didn't think that was going to happen, I quickly remembered that this scene is in the desert...so if you take that into account...
I'm pretty sure you came across my algorithm b/c your channel name is similar to Hats Off Entertainment but I'm glad you did! Looking forward to checking out more of your content 😁
...Oh, so THAT'S WHY Invasion America felt oddly out of place to me. I recall seeing an ad for it on Kids WB, but...this show also has a guy be SPLIT IN HALF, and they really thought "Oh, this is PERFECT for kids!", like...huh? Also, interesting fun fact: the WB at one point aired Pinkie and the Brain in their prime time line-up, too, almost as if they wanted to counter-program The Simpsons with it. No, really, they respected it so much, they kinda treated it as an adult animated show in a sense.
The Oblongs was one of the funniest cartoons ever made... it felt completely unhinged, but still very relatable and almost realistic with the subject matter. so sad that we are never going to see more of it

Bro you know mission hill was the goat when it could have been released today and it would still do numbers
Had to add this in an edit, that bit about early struggling artists hit home man.
Oh wow, I forgot about "Baby Blues". that unlocked a memory lol
You have no idea how rare it is for me to hear anybody talk about Invasion America. I use to watch that show when it was still on tv! It had a slow burn yea but the pacing was pretty solid for a mini series. Heck at one point I almost thought it was a fever dream but I know what I saw was real.
I had never heard of it, but I'm glad I have now
@@HatsOffMedias It's practically lost media at this point! Thank god for the internet or it most definitely would've been lost for good.
The pre Cw days of were certainly memorable to remember.
I’m glad you mentioned the backgrounds in the oblongs always thought they were amazing. weird to think if wb hadn’t won the bidding war that the backgrounds would’ve looked completely different they always stood out to me as classic wb style 😊
I'd love to own one
Nice tastes, been watching the new clone high?
@@onehardtosolvekase6670 yes I have and I'm seriously loving me some Joan of Arc with friends. Still miss Ghandi though... 😥
Yesss Duckman and The Critic!
Thank you again for reconnecting me to my past!!!
there was something about the oblongs that REALLY resonated me as a poor and neurodivergent kid-- i saw a lot of myself in milo, and liked that a character like him was the protagonist and his equally weird friends were always along for the ride
mission hill is one of the comfiest shows, every time i caught it i just got such lovely vibes. the energy and the art style and everything work together really well
Man, Invasion America has been living rent free in my brain for the last 25 years…
Invasion America, was 12 when it came out. I'm almost 40 and still think about this unfinished master piece. It left on such a cliff hanger. It was truly yosh
god your channel is some of my favorite content on youtube right now. youre gonna explode past this 27k
Man, I LOVED The Oblongs and Mission Hill back in the day. I can't explain how disappointed I was that they got canceled so early.
mission hill was released at the same year i started college, couldn't have arrived at a better time
the vibe, mood really captures the demands and at times laidback moments of adult life
okay. so about the tumbleweed part...
it's dry and hot there as is. and in a chase you push the car's engine, which makes it hot. tumbleweed being dry and flammable, you can hear the wheels scraping against them, while they are stuck under the car. so they catch on fire, which in tandem with the hot engine make the cables and fuel-tubes catch on fire under the hood. all the more easier, since the air intake meant to cool the motor will fuel it with air. and ofc you stop and get out, if you see your car catching on fire.
goes to show the dude has a good head on his shoulder to look at tumbleweeds and connect the dots about it being dry and flammable, using it to stop a car.
Back in the late 90's in the early 2000s when my parents my parents didn't have cable in the house the WB was my go-to channel for entertainment
the oblongs and mission hill are two of my favorite adult shows. glad to see them covered here :D!!
I too would like to see the lost season of Baby Blues. Reminds me of the legendary Dexter's laboratory episode, Dexter's Rude Removal. Maybe one day it will be uncovered and shown to the public
Finally someone talked about the oblongs and gave them some love!
Thank you for introducing me to “Mission Hill”! It is love at first watch!
It’s safe to say that “Mission Hill” is the “Firefly” of adult cartoons.
My first time watching this creator, I enjoyed the vid. When he mentioned Con Air coming on right after the kids block I audibly said "That's how I first saw it!".
He was stuffing the tumbleweeds up into the engine compartment, where they would catch on fire.
Have you never seen a tumbleweed?
Oblongs was such an underrated show
Really was
I read Baby Blues as a kid and loved it (Thanks, you unlocked that hidden memory), I didn't know it had a show! How cool
I liked baby blues and Mission Hill. It showcased how new parenting is hard but it’s worth it for your kid, and Mission Hill is perfect cause it’s speaks to adults who graduated college/or in high school and are stuck with finding themselves
Yep, perfect way to sum it up
Mission Hill brings back memories of watching public tv in the living room late at night after a saturday night gaming sesh
I recently Started to watch Mission Hills thx to this video, & the part of chasing a dream while having an 8 hours Job WAS SO RELATABLE TO ME
Need to point out that the algorithm brought me here, it's not ALWAYS evil. You have yourself an amazing channel, dude. I work from home and watch a lot of long form content, and this video made me smile. Keep up the good work, man! Definitely going to check out your Patreon.
Mission Hill is my favorite animated show of all time, it’s the absolute greatest, you’re right the vibes are unmatched sheesh I love this show!
Invasion America aired here in Brazil for, like, one month and I don't know why my brother and I miss it so much
Loved the video, the first 3 cartoons were some of my favorites in college. I remember Baby blues on adult swim and watching Mission Hill on CZcams. Classic
21:34 And I’m continuing the show . I was inspired by you man
Thank you for collecting these shows for me. I almost forgot about all of them. Have a like and a new sub.
I absolutely LOVE Mission Hill. “Weirdy, weirdy, weirdy…peas at?” 🤣
man watching this really makes me wanna revisit mission hill. i didn't realize as a kid just how gorgeous of a cartoon it is. something about a lot of stuff from the 2000s, the bold line work, the pinks and greens and purples...think gorillaz. it was just a whole vibe, and i've been sorta seeing it make a comeback lately. that style definitely inspired my own work i've been doing lately.
Mission Hill is absolutely the most underrated on this list. I miss it. I want it to come back.
Oblongs and Mission Hill are so damn good, sad they didn’t get much of a chance :(
I'm so glad that I watch this video because I've been trying to figure out what the name of mission Hill was for so long because I can remember watching the first episode but I could never Google it properly to find it thank you
We didn’t have WB when the first three shows were airing because we only had satellite where I lived, but I got to see them when Adult Swim picked them up a few years later and they become some of my favorite animated shows. All three are pretty unique among adult animation and I would love to see another Baby Blues or Mission Hill-style show again someday. (Undergrads too)
Holy crap, seeing Mission Hill in the thumbnail just unlocked chunk of my brain lol
I worked in a bar in the early 00s and would get home at around 430am and Oblongs and Mission Hill were on.
Enjoyed this! Hope you're having a good day. Only show listed here I've seen was the ooblongs, caught few episodes on adult swim long ago
Awesome!! Looking forward to this trip! Thanks and safety to ya mate!
The mother character on the Oblongs always reminds me of David Sedaris' mother.
Me and some friends started rewatching Mission Hill and MY GOD we related more the Andy and his friends more than before. As for Invasion America? Yeah, this is so obscure that even the usual guys that covered obscure animation haven’t covered it.
In tumbleweeds defense, they ARE highly flammable.
in canada 2001-2003, we had a channel called "teletoon" and they would play all in one block "the detour"....mission hill, the oblongs, undergrads, clone high..... it was the best
Thanks so much!
1st time ever seeing one of your videos... excellent...
Also 33:43 is the beginning of the best part of this video...
And while I didn't think that was going to happen, I quickly remembered that this scene is in the desert...so if you take that into account...
I forgot about "Baby Blues". I read the funnies, and loved the show as a kid. Time to rewatch it as an adult
I love Mission Hill. I just love the artstyle and the cozy vibe. The world feels very lived in.
I'm pretty sure you came across my algorithm b/c your channel name is similar to Hats Off Entertainment but I'm glad you did! Looking forward to checking out more of your content 😁
This is my first video of yours and I have to say I love your style so much also much love for BNL ❤️
...Oh, so THAT'S WHY Invasion America felt oddly out of place to me.
