  • Associate Professor at Auburn University, Becky Barlow, demonstrates how to use a hand-loaded pine straw baler. Before loading the baler with straw, it must be outfitted with twine in order to tie the bale once it has been packed. All sticks, pine cones, invasive species, and insects should be removed from the pine straw before loading it into the baler. If a burning regime is practiced on the property, only the freshly fallen pine straw should be raked. Burnt or old straw should be left on the ground. Once the baler is fully loaded, it is packed with the wooden plunger and then loaded again. The string is tightened around the bale and then knotted. After opening the door, the bale is pulled out and is ready for sale.

holy smokes that is a slow labor intensive process for one bale! bcs has a miniature round baler that attaches to one of their 2 wheel walk behind tractors. rake the needles into a long windrow, make a round bale approx 100 lbs in 3 minutes- probably 3x as much straw in one bale. the economics of it are way to numerous to count. thanks.

Yep, I just bought 57 bales this week, makes a great ground cover around landscaping. Costs about $4.50 a bale. Looks great and keeps weeds from coming up in the beds.

@@danielgant2214 no kidding.. I've got acres of the stuff lol. Never imagined people spreading it on garden beds. It is very good at suppressing weeds though.

@@mycatiswaysmarterthanmosto8500 it actually make the home look really neat and clean when you lay some of this stuff down and its not a major fire hazard if you're a responsible adult. with or without it in your lawn fire is supposed to stay away from your home regardless
