My father brought me to Pagliacci in Minneapolis when Cornell MacNeil came with the touring company (Si puo). I was twelve, but I was captured by the richness of his voice. It was want stayed with me over the last 54 years.
What a pleasure it is to see two great singing actors at the top of their game. Thank God this was captured on video, as a tonic against the disrespectful Regie productions and inadequate vocalism that seem to be the rule, rather than the exception, in our benighted age. Most enjoyable. Thank you, Manoli!
We simply don’t get singing of this standard in Verdi operas today. So grateful I was just old enough in the 70’s to see/hear many of the greats in what now appears to be the last decade of outstanding opera productions. Cotrubas is outstanding as Gilda and of course. MacNeil was legendary even when past his best years. Great conducting from Levine.
Musically superb and dramatically thrilling interpretations from Ileana Cotrubas and Cornell McNeil in this stirring and luxuriously cast (including the great Justino Diaz) Metropolitan Opera production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, conducted by maestro Levine. Stunning stuff, wonderful to look back to the glorious 60’s and 70’s and thank you so much for posting!
Absolutely. I don’t bother with opera anymore having experienced the golden age of both singing and production. Heard Cotrubas sing Gilda at the ROH/London (c.1974) in the magnificent Zeffirelli production with designs by the incomparable Lila di Nobili - unforgettable!
MacNeil was a great baritone in an era of great baritones - Warren, Gobbi, Merrill, Milnes - and in the contemporary press, comparisons to his colleagues were frequent. But MacNeil's performances had singular musical richness, and moral and intellectual complexity that were his alone. MacNeil may have had rivals, but he had no equals. Cornell MacNeil (September 24, 1922 - July 15, 2011). Ileana Cotrubaș had a career spanning from the 1960s to the 1980s. She was much admired for her acting skills and facility for singing opera in many different languages. Cotrubaș retired from public singing in 1990, but continued to teach, giving master classes and coaching promising young singers.
I like Cotrubas's round, lustrous and strong voice. By contrast, most other sopranos voices seem a bit thin and try in this duet. Perhaps they want to emphasize Gilda's vulnerability and helplessness?
They all likely lack Cotruba’s strong and developed chest voice which is NEEDED in all of opera and very apparent in this piece. I’m finding nearly no strong stable chest voice top to bottom from all modern opera singers. It’s a travesty opera has fallen this badly. It pales in comparison to this age and the early 20th century.
By this time in some later career performances MacNeil‘s often recalcitrant instrument early in on is fully warmed up & steady by this point in the opera as is heard here. Hard to control such a huge instrument & this was even, to a lesser extent, something that Warren had to deal with especially in his complete roles later on.
Beautiful performance.Their voices blend perfectly together.I think the soprano is good but discrete in comparison to the greatest. But on the other hand he is very important as a baritone .Ideal for Rigoletto. And that's said by someone who can't go to bed without listening to Mario ZANASI.The costume he wears is a little bit ridiculous,a little bit like Kermit the frog. But he eludes that due to his great dark voice and dignity.
This was the production planned for Beverly Sills which she backed out of to begin running the New York City Opera. She did however record it with Milnes and Kraus. So if you don’t like Milnes w/Sutherland (and I do) or Kraus w/Moffo (and I do) then you have another choice.
Kiim Maritsa: Yeah, are you’re missing that something: taste. If you’re going to criticize the performance then explain why unless it’s terrible obvious what it is. Like yourself.
I agree with you. I thought it was going to be very moving, but MacNeil soon lost the splendid acting focus he displayed at the beginning. It all became too predictable and was not rescued by 'Si vendetta', which lacked the extraordinary thrill it can generate. I just go back to Tito Gobbi every time for a perfect fusion of emotion and excitement...
This is definitely one of my favorites
He is a great Rigoletto
My Favorite visit his Tosca 1978
@@PBXVIILY You should listen to his Scarpia in 1962 with Price and Corelli!!!

Beautiful singing, Bravi.
I saw this production at the Met in the fall of 1977, the first opera I ever saw there. Unforgettable.

Saw him as Rigoletto when I was 13 at the old Met . Matinée Bergonzi sang the Duke , and Gianna D’Angelo sang Gilda !!
Domingo, Cotrubas, Mc Neew, Justino Dias, Izola Jones. Uma obra prim.
Brilliant!
Thank you, dear Manoli.
Ahhhhhhhh!!!! Rigoletto !!!! Superbe !!!!!!

I love her voice also. Ileana has a lovely, full and creamy soprano that seems to sit ‘just on the note’.
Yes!! Gilda is supposed to be a full voiced high soprano. The light leggero and soubrettes are unfortunately pushed to sing this part.

I never knew this was meant for Sills. I’m a huge admirer of her but I’m glad Cotrubas sang this here.
Milnes w/Sutherland best
No, Cotrubas/Capucilli or Moffo/Merrill
Come Gilda è molto commovente. Enorme, adorabile
